There are not enough words to thank Kristina Ploeger-Hekmatpanah for stepping in with a few hours notice last Sat. when Sacha Boutros had a sudden medical emergency on the day of the concert. We are pleased to share that she is at home recovering and we send our well wishes.

To Kristina - the fact you were willing to share your talents so graciously and on such short notice is amazing and no one would have known that was the case given your exceptional performance. You certainly brightened the holidays for all of us.

Beloved Spokane drummer and teacher Drey Davis, 29, dies just days after leukemia diagnosis 10/18/2023

Thank you to The Spokesman-Review and reporter Treva Lind for the lovely front page story on Drey Davis that captured the many aspects of a fabulous human being -- his love of family and God, his musical talent, his work ethic and the way he lifted up all those around him.

Beloved Spokane drummer and teacher Drey Davis, 29, dies just days after leukemia diagnosis A beloved Spokane musician and teacher, Quindrey “Drey” Davis stood out as a talented drummer as early as middle school.

Photos from Spokane Jazz Orchestra's post 10/16/2023

A beloved member of the Spokane Jazz Orchestra has suddenly passed away. We are stunned, saddened and our thoughts are with his young family.

Quindrey “Drey” Davis was an exceptionally talented drummer and his solos always inspired the SJO audience. Drey joined SJO two years ago and his first performance was the Dec. 2021 Christmas concert.

In addition to playing with SJO, Drey taught music at Northwest Christian School, taught private drum lessons and constantly had gigs to support his family, which includes wife Allyson, son Cairo and a daughter, Rhythm, who is due in 10 weeks. One year ago, Drey and Ally purchased a house and were planning on a bright future.

Instead, after feeling ill for almost a year, Drey finally went to the doctor and was told last Tuesday that he had leukemia. In just a few days he began having brain bleeds and passed away yesterday. It is so hard to believe that just a week ago Drey was playing the drums to enthusiastic applause from the SJO audience.

Before he passed, Drey said to Ally’s mother, “I am so sorry. I was trying so hard to provide for my family that I didn’t go to the doctor.” She says, “He has always put everyone else first.”

Our hearts go out to Drey’s family and many friends and fellow musicians. He inspired the artwork for this season’s graphic with the theme, “The Sound of Peace.” He will be greatly missed and the rest of the SJO season will be dedicated to his memory.

For those who are so moved, Drey’s mother-in-law has set up a GoFundMe page and here is the link. https://www.gofundme.com/f/drey-allyson-and-cairo-davis

The theme is "The Sound of Peace." Music builds bridges that connect people – crossing barriers of language, culture, politics, religion and even time itself. Jazz exemplifies the breaking of barriers – it is the musical unity created from diversity of thought, tradition, and expression, emerging from a blend of ragtime, blues, folk, and other musical stylings.

Bob Curnow has had an amazing career from the start. He became a trombonist with the Stan Kenton Orchestra the day after he graduated from college in 1963. After leaving to earn 3 advanced degrees in music, he returned at age 30 to serve as chief arranger, conductor, and producer for a new Kenton album and a year later became Director of Artists & Repertoire, then general manager in charge of the complete Creative World operations...and that's just the beginning. Bob is pictured here with Stan Kenton in 1974.
