The Spokane Parks Foundation cultivates the health, growth and continued enjoyment of our communities
The Spokane Parks Foundation is governed by a volunteer board of directors, with a small staff to manage our work. A description of our projects, grants and history can be found on at www.spokaneparksfoundation.org.
The Spokane Parks Foundation knows we can’t help families participate in outdoor recreation and aquatics activities without the fantastic support from partners like the Avista Foundation. We asked for their help, and they answered. Thanks to the Avista Foundation, we can continue to offer scholarships for underserved kids to participate in swim lessons and other outdoor summer camps through our Kids in Parks and Pools program.
Their ongoing partnership and support are invaluable to us. We are so grateful for the Avista Foundation and ALL they do in our community!
The Spokane Parks Foundation knows that sometimes all it takes is a group of willing volunteers and the desire to improve things. We learned that the Cheney Veterans Memorial Park and monument needed an overhaul. The restroom required new paint, plumbing, and roofing. Benches and tables cried out to be sanded and stained. The memorial and flagpole required new lighting. So, we connected the 4 News Now Extreme Team KXLY and Cheney Parks & Recreation.
"We went in there. Together, we made it happen in one day," said Mark Peterson Kxly, who heads up the Extreme Team KXLY.
The event's sponsor, Horizon Credit Union, provided volunteers. Local merchants like Rodda Paint Co., BJ Roofing, Mountain States Electrical Contractors, and Gold Seal Plumbing contributed time and products.
"I love the fact that we're able to do something that so many people are connected to," said Peterson. "When you go out to the park, and you see all the different wars represented, and all the Cheney residents that fought in all those wars, it's a heavy feeling."
Thanks to the Extreme Team KXLY and Mark Peterson Kxly, we can continue commemorating veterans and their sacrifices for years to come.

Construction of the city of Cheney's new aquatic center is about to start, three years after a major mechanical failure closed the city's previous recreational facility, says Dan Curley, capital project manager at the City of Cheney Public Works.
The new aquatic center will cost about $14 million and will be erected at 115 N. Eighth, Hagelin Park, in Cheney, the site of the original facility, which was demolished in December.
A groundbreaking ceremony was held in June for the project, with construction expected to commence in July and an anticipated substantial completion date of May 20, 2025.
"If everything goes to plan, then we'll be able to open up in time for the end of the next school year," he says.

July is Park & Recreation Month!
DID YOU KNOW: 86% of Spokane residents live within a 10-minute walk of a park.
Living close to parks and other recreation facilities is consistently related to higher physical activity levels for both adults and youth. Moreover, parks provide a connection to nature, which studies demonstrate relieves stress, strengthens interpersonal relationships and improves mental health.
Whether you spend the day with family and friends, at work, or cap off your holiday with Riverfront Spokane’s massive fireworks show, be safe and enjoy all that makes our area unique. From all of us, Happy Fourth of July.
