Since we first posted the audition notice for Ride the Cyclone, we have received a number of messages regarding our decision to not include minors in the cast. We recognize how deeply this show about finding, acknowledging, and embracing one’s true self resonates with young audiences, and for that reason we were particularly excited to feature it as our 2025 season opener.
Nevertheless, there are certain limitations and unfortunate realities that complicate the inclusion of minors in a production. While the content of the libretto may not be especially racy or inappropriate, there may be aspects of the staging and choreography that may cross lines of propriety and legality where minors are concerned. The director has expressed an intent to stage certain scenes and numbers to include intimate physical contact. Minors are legally unable to consent to such things, and so for that reason Stage Left, with emphatic agreement from the director, decided to limit casting to 18+.
Additionally, there are some practical, logistical concerns that contributed to the final decision. We now provide separate dressing rooms for minors for all represented genders, and going forward we are running background checks on cast and crew when minors are involved.
Stage Left is dedicated to providing a safe space for everyone who walks through our doors, and as any parent who has had a child in one of our shows can attest, we have always taken their safety and their happiness seriously. Rest assured that these new policies came about as a result of a process of self-assessment that we apply to all aspects of our operation, rather than as a reaction to any particular incident.
Sometimes making the right choice means making an unpopular choice. This is one of those times. Restricting Cyclone auditions to 18+ was a difficult decision because we know how much this show speaks to younger audiences. Unfortunately-- in this case-- they will have to remain in the audience.
Thank you for you understanding and your continued support!

Stage Left Theater is thrilled to announce the appointment of our new Interim Managing|Artistic Director. Please welcome Alana Shepherd into her new role!
Alana is an award-winning lighting designer and the founding principal of Intangible Light, an architectural and theatrical lighting design firm located in Spokane, Washington. She also serves as the Resident Lighting Designer for Stage Left Theater from 2022-2024. She received her Master of Fine Arts in Lighting Design from Carnegie Mellon University. Before returning to her hometown and founding Intangible Light, she was a part of the New York City architectural lighting world for 15 years.
Notable architectural projects include: Harriet Tubman Monument, Newark, NJ; Times Square Ball (ALD/programmer – IESNY Lumen Citation), NYC; W Hotel Times Square (IES Award of Merit), NYC; Thompson Hotel Miami Beach (IES Award of Merit). Recent stage productions include Fiddler on the Roof (Coeur d’Alene Summer Theatre), Pippin (Stage Left), The Secret Garden (Coeur d’Alene Summer Theatre), Fun Home (Stage Left), Amélie (University of Idaho), Pass Over (Stage Left, winner - WSCTA Outstanding Lighting Design, AACTfest Outstanding Production, AACTfest Magic Moment Award), Sweeney Todd (Stage Left, honorable mention – AACTfest Design Competition), Sondheim on Sondheim (Pittsburgh Playhouse), The Rocky Horror Show (Stage Left) and According to Coyote (Spokane Ensemble Theatre).
In 2020, Alana founded the North American Coalition of Lighting Industry Qu**rs after coming out as transgender and seeing a need for LGBTQIA+ advocacy within the lighting community. She sits on several committees and working groups relating to inclusion and belonging, and she frequently contributes to industry periodicals and podcasts. Her essay on q***r inclusion in architectural lighting for the June 2022 issue of LEDs Magazine is a 2023 Eddie Award winner.
In her varied career in architectural and theatrical lighting, Alana has done it all: design, sales, project management, programming, teaching, nonprofit administration, and activism. As the incoming Interim Managing/Artistic Director of Stage Left Theater, she plans to draw upon all of it to drive Spokane’s scrappiest little theatre into its next era. She has big ideas, perhaps bigger than this temporary appointment can contain, but we’ll see what the future holds. If there’s one thing Stage Left Theater has proven, it’s that the future is limitless.
"If you can look into the seeds of time,
And say which grain will grow and which will not." Hurry and get your tickets today! They are selling quickly. 👀
