YORK COUNTY BURN BAN LIFTED
Effective today – Monday, June 26, 2023 -- the York County Board of Commissioners has lifted the burn ban in place in York County.
The board reached its decision after consultation with after consultation with the York County Fire Chiefs Association, who advised that recent area rain, along with additional projected rainfall and higher relative humidity created conditions conducive to removing the ban.
Rescinding the ban means that open burning – in accordance with residents’ respective municipalities – is now legal in York County. If residents are to engage in open burning, the board urges them to exercise caution in doing so, as such fires could still grow unmanageable. Please keep in mind that as of Monday, all of Pennsylvania remains in a drought watch, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.
The lifting of the ban also means fireworks are now permitted, although residents should abide by state law and also their municipality’s ordinances in regard to proper use.
Ted Czech
Public Information Officer
York County Office of Emergency Management/York County 911
The York County Commissioners have passed a new 30-day temporary burn ban, effective June 12th. The purpose of the new resolution is to provide clarity that firepits and backyard fires are included in the ban, as well as ALL fireworks, consumer and commercial grade, unless there is written authorization from the municipality having jurisdiction.
In a separate email, we have asked fire companies/departments and police departments for their continued support and partnership through enforcement of this burn ban. We hope this provides clarity to you and those in your jurisdiction.
York County 30-day Burn Ban effective June 5, 2023.

Borough History
Frederick Kraft (1776-1838) was the founder of Jefferson. He was a Baltimore native and is listed in the 1808 Baltimore directory as a tavern keeper. In 1812, this piece of land, now known as the town of Jefferson, was nothing more than a crossroads and had been used for half a century for the commercial trade between Baltimore and York. In fact, Codorus whiskey found its way to Baltimore markets by way of this route.
On February 1, 1812, Peter Hamm of Codorus Township sold the 23 acres of land that contained the crossroads to Kraft for $675.00. Kraft quickly established a tavern and store (which is no longer standing). It is assumed that he knew that a tavern, store, and important crossroads were standard ingredients in the founding of a new town. In 1814 Kraft hired John L. Hinkle (1781-1846), a Hanover surveyor, to lay out a town on the crossroads.
Frederick Kraft named the town for Thomas Jefferson because of the strong Democratic ties of the residents. However, in 1866, when the town was incorporated, the name Jefferson was already taken from a town in Greene County near Pittsburgh. So, the residents of the “York County”Jefferson chose “Codorus”, as its postal address, since it is in Codorus Township.
Kraft spent the last 22 years of his life in Jefferson and died in July of 1838.
