Please join us in our local celebration of National VA Research Week 2024 on May 2nd, 2024.

We will be celebrating with a three-hour long program on May 2nd from 08:00 to 11:00 in the Enright Building of the John Cochran campus. During the early stages of the Covid-19 pandemic, reports emerged that persons who had been infected with SARS-CoV-2 were having lingering health problems. Such long-term issues were collectively referred to as “long Covid” and were reported to affect nearly every organ system. The cardinal features of long Covid include fatigue, dysautonomia (or postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome), postexertional malaise, and cognitive difficulties that are colloquially referred to as “brain fog.”

The putative mechanisms of cognitive dysfunction in long Covid include viral persistence, activation of complement and platelet aggregation leading to microthrombosis and fusion of neurons and glial cells, neuroinflammation and impaired neurogenesis, and low serotonin–induced dysfunction in vagal signaling. CRH denotes corticotropin-releasing hormone.

The Veterans Research and Education Foundation of St. Louis and Pfizer Announce a New Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Pharmacoepidemiology

St. Louis, MO -- The Veterans Research and Education Foundation of St. Louis, in collaboration with Pfizer Inc, is proud to announce the establishment of a new post-doctoral fellowship program in pharmacoepidemiology.

This three-year fellowship will offer unparalleled hands-on experience in advanced statistical methodologies, leveraging the extensive national healthcare databases of the U.S. Veterans Health Administration to address consequential knowledge gaps in real-world effectiveness of various therapeutics.

The fellowship program is led by the Pharmacoepidemiology Division of the Clinical Epidemiology Center at the VA St. Louis Health Care System. It is operated in partnership with Pfizer's Global Medical Epidemiology Department and administered by the Veterans Research and Education Foundation of St. Louis.

“We now live in the age of big data, and one of the main challenges is scarcity of expertise to develop insights from these data; this new program will a new generation of world class experts leading the transformation of data into new and actionable knowledge that improves the health and well-being of people around the world” said Yan Xie, Head of the Pharmacoepidemiology Division of the Clinical Epidemiology Center. “We are excited to launch this program that promises to harness the power of big data in improving patient care and outcomes” added Xie. ““This collaboration provides a platform for talented pharmacoepidemiologists to innovate and address urgent research questions, that in turn have the potential to contribute to healthcare improvement.” Aida Habtezion Pfizer’s Chief Medical Officer.

Designed to cultivate the next generation of leaders in pharmacoepidemiology, the program offers mentorship by an outstanding interdisciplinary team of VA and Pfizer scientists and underscores a joint commitment by both the VA Foundation and Pfizer to advancing healthcare through research and innovation.

This unique program is designed to foster career development by offering opportunities to produce high-impact research publications, pursue external funding from VA, NIH, among others, and transition towards independence in sectors ranging from academia to industry.

Exceptional candidates with robust background in epidemiology, biostatistics or related fields, a track record of handling large datasets, and superior communication skills are encouraged to apply. The selection process will prioritize candidates demonstrating a strong potential for conducting ambitious, collaborative research intended to enhance public health outcomes.
