American Music Abroad is a cultural diplomacy program that brings together American musicians with global audiences. AMA is sponsored by the U.S.
Department of State with funding provided by the U.S. Government and administered by American Voices. Each year AMA selects approximately 10 ensembles to embark on overseas tours. While on these tours musicians participate in concerts, workshops, educational programs and more. Learn about American Music Abroad at amvoices.org/ama.
Aurora Nealand Music & The Inquiry Quintet draw their approach to collective improvisation through embracing the lineage of collectives spanning from the New Orleans Early Jazz traditions, to the AACM, and beyond. The group is lead by composer/multi-instrumentalist (saxophones, accordion, voice), and social-practice organizer, Aurora Nealand, based in New Orleans, Louisiana. She’s been a prominent force in the New Orleans Traditional Jazz and Improvised music scenes since 2004, and is deeply interested in the sonification of everyday objects and knowledge-generation through the stories and histories that Sound (with a capital S) contain. Nealand spent years playing in streets, clubs & second-line parades while learning from her elders about the traditions, sounds & stories that build the New Orleans Traditional Jazz lexicon.

Another Jazz Appreciation Month feature! This time with AMA alumni the Caili O'Doherty Quintet. The group is led by New York-based pianist, composer, arranger and educator, Caili O’Doherty. She is known for integrating structures of language in both her compositions and her approach to improvisation. Her recent music focuses on the celebration, preservation, and expansion upon the achievements of jazz’s unsung women heroes. Enjoy listening to the group performing here on a AMA tour in Georgia!
Next Tuesday, artist, jazz soloist, educator, Arts Envoy and American Music Abroad Exchange Alumnus Brent Birckhead joins MentorTalks on Instagram Live () in honor of Jazz Appreciation Month. Having performed around the world, Brent will discuss a career spent furthering diplomacy and connection among cultures through jazz. In this episode, we'll hear from Brent on how he prepares for each tour, especially those with audiences who may have never heard jazz before, as well as what it really takes to succeed as an artist.
With April being Jazz Appreciation Month, we want to feature some of AMA's jazz alumni. First up, we want show off this incredible performance by Birckhead in Zimbabwe.
"Brent Birckhead is an award-winning artist, whose aesthetic is an intersectional amalgam of traditional and popular styles. Unbound by genre, Birckhead’s approach to woodwind artistry is driven by his compulsion for creative risk and deep respect for legacy. His place in the continuum of a storied lineage begins with his surname, Birckhead, and extends to his extensive musical education and work ethic as a visionary approach to life as a rising leader."
