We would like to introduce our 2024 "For The Common Good" Awardees! Receiving the Robert Walston Chubb Award for Sustained Commitment to Legal Services this year is Gary Burger.

As a board member for ten years, Gary has taken on a number of different roles. As Chair of the Planned Giving Committee, he helped shape a Legacy Giving Program for Legal Services, and established the annual Estate Planning CLE to connect Legal Services with attorneys statewide. He has also been an active fundraiser for Legal Services, securing donations through CLE seminars hosted by Burger Law, and supporting the Development Committee regularly. Big news about a deadly crash that happened in our area last year when a Greyhound bus struck three semi trucks that were parked on an exit ramp

According to a news update today, the driver of the Greyhound had been involved in 4 other crashes since 2018 and passengers of the vehicle reported observed unsafe driving prior to the accident, like repeatedly hitting the rubble strips and driving in multiple lanes.

The dashcam records earned him a spot on the company's list of drivers displaying the riskiest driving behavior that month.

Investigators found numerous infractions that were omitted from the driver's record. What a mess. This person should not have been on our roads, especially as a commercial driver with so many lives on board.

There has been a pattern of delayed justice when it comes to slavery and racism in the US. Juneteenth marks the day that the slaves in Texas finally became free — a whole 2 and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. And it just became a federal holiday in 2021.

We can't even begin to untangle the complex trauma and damage that the fingerprints of slavery have imprinted on our country, still plainly visible today. But we can honor the sacrifices of those who helped end slavery, celebrate the progress that has been made, interrogate the innate privilege so many of us know all our lives, and make an effort to heal wounds.

Celebrate Juneteenth. Celebrate freedom. Celebrate progress. And never stop demanding positive change and real equity.

This "ShotSpotter" surveillance technology: an answer to curbing gun violence and saving lives or a problematic and poor allocation of resources?

SLMPD plans to install sensors in Dutchtown and Mount Pleasant neighborhoods later this year. Critics complain about the concentrated use in select North City and County areas so far and question their accuracy.

Our neighbors in Chicago decided not to renew their existing contract in 2024.

Could this program help save lives, and provide a sense of closure to families? Is there a better way to protect and serve our communities? Don't have any answers over here.

You might have also heard about a New York lawyer who used the AI tool for research on a case file and ended up citing 6 fictional court cases. He's in a bit of trouble.

We're proud to say that at Burger Law, we have a little more wherewithal and integrity than to rely on a AI tool that provides a disclaimer to every user about the accuracy of its output, but that doesn't mean that, like the rest of the world, we're not interested in what AI can do or open to exploring how it could be applied to make lives easier and the world a better place. One of our biggest concerns is the public, people who have been injured and may need a lawyer, turning to AI for legal counsel and getting ill-founded advice.

So, we decided to have a little fun and test the bounds of ChatGPT as it related to personal injury law. No agenda, just honest exploration. Stay tuned to see what we found.

A lawyer used ChatGPT to prepare a court filing. It went horribly awry. As part of an airline passenger's lawsuit, the AI invented relevant cases that didn't exist and insisted they were real.

Life is sometimes beautiful, sometimes painful, and always unpredictable. Within those twists and turns, there are some things we can control and some that we can't.

It's not your circumstances but how you choose to respond that makes you who you are. When life rears its head and presents you with a challenge, you can only control how you respond. When you recognize that, you can actually be empowered to react in a way that is healthy and effective for you.

Don't be caught off guard.

After a motor vehicle accident, each party collects all other drivers' contact and insurance information (or at least, they should) and inform their insurance company or file a formal claim.

We enjoy a long Memorial Day Weekend and the colloquial start of summer as much as the next person. Whether you're shopping for deals or BBQing with friends and family, it's a good time.
