Campers are spending the four-day, three-night camp hiking around the lake π₯Ύ, swimming π, writing in nature journals π, learning archery πΉ, paddling canoes πΆ, singing songs around the campfire πΆ, and so much more!
Operated by the SJCOE STEM Programs, the new βSky Mountain Summer Camp β Connect with Natureβ helps students discover the natural world around them through hikes, activities, instruction, and art projects.

The 2023-24 school year marks the fifth year that Murguia has been a Special Education teacher, and we were excited to recognize her as Educator of the Month in May.
When asked what Murguia loves most about teaching, she stated, βI love seeing students make progress throughout the year. Seeing students strive to reach their goals makes me feel like I am truly making a difference.β π§‘
Murguia chose a career in education because she genuinely loves being with students and helping them learn.
π A fun fact about Murguia is that prior to becoming a teacher, she was an EMT for eight months!

Redwood School has a new mural! The mural was commissioned due to a generous donation for the artwork. π»
Redwood is one of two special center sites offered through our Special Education Program. The school serves students ages six to 22, and emphasizes functional curriculum with an independent living, vocational education, and community based instructional delivery system.

The third annual Color the Summer Art Camp took over Sky Mountain Outdoor Education Center this week! π²π¨
From gradients and shading to pastels and painting, 6th β 8th grade students from across the county were encouraged to explore and be creative!
Each of the twelve activities and crafts were rooted in the elements of art to expand studentsβ understanding of art principles before middle school and high school.
Color the Summer Art Camp held their day camps for 3rd β 5th grade students last week at Durham Ferry. ποΈ

π±β»οΈ This weekβs STEAM Camp at the Children's Museum of Stockton was all about environmental literacy! Hosted by the SJCOE STEM programs team, students from Stockton Unified School District learned how to reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle different materials.
Throughout the week, students learned how to upcycle everyday materials to give them a new purpose and help reduce our carbon footprint. Logan, a student at Kohl Open learned that he could make items from cardboard β even Thorβs helmet and hammer and Captain Americaβs shield!
Districts across San Joaquin County are working closely with the SJCOE STEM Programs department to focus on STEM education. From visiting outdoor education programs to engineering in the FabLab, districts are exploring new ways for students and teachers to engage in hands-on learning experiences that foster creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.

Did you know? On June 19, 1865 federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people be freed. June 19, Juneteenth, is recognized as a day to commemorate the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States.

The SJCOE concluded our graduation season this past weekend with Discovery ChalleNGe Academy Class 15 and Teachers College of San Joaquin! In May, we celebrated the graduates from the one.Program, Come Back Kids and Building Futures Academy, Special Education programs, and Venture Academy Family of Schools.

In anticipation of Father's Day, students in Leslie Filioβs summer school class decorated cards and worked through a lesson highlighting words centered on Father's Day.
These fun activities allowed students to work on reinforcing skills, which is a key focus of the SJCOE Special Education Programs extended school year.
Filio's class is one of two at Evelyn Costa Elementary School, the newest school in Lammersville Unified School District. SJCOE Special Education Programs are also holding extended school year classes at other schools in the district, as well as in sites at Tracy Unified and Manteca Unified school districts and SJCOE-operated schools.

During the ceremony on June 8, we celebrated the accomplishments of these students who have remained dedicated to improving their life and reclaiming their high school credits over the last five and a half months.
Many Class 15 cadets will return to their high school back on track for graduation, while 15 cadets crossed the stage to receive their high school diploma. π
We are so proud of all they accomplished at DCA and all they will continue to achieve in the next chapter of their lives.
Educators are already preparing for the 2024-25 school year with the SJCOE Empowering Leaders for Excellence in Mathematics Education training. πβ¨
Last Thursday, administrators and math coaches from districts across the county came to the SJCOE to learn new skills and strategies for effective math instruction while focusing on how to effectively support math teachers in fostering positive and robust math learning experiences.
Offered by SJCOE Mathematics, the summer training will impact classrooms throughout the county, building a strong network of mathematics educators. π
Join Discovery ChalleNGe Academy (DCA) for one of their upcoming orientation days!
DCA is a free life-changing 22-week residential program in which teens, ages 16-18, can earn 65 high school credits to complete their diploma, and develop life skills that will help them get back on track to a healthy productive life.
