Tracy Unified School District is one of the 14 school districts supported by SJCOE. SJCOE STEM Programs is fortunate to partner with Tracy Unified in its STEM work, including supporting their STEM curriculum with which Tracy teachers teach Science, Technology, Engineer, Math, and Computer Science to every student from Pre-K through 12th grade, as well as through field trips to Sky Mountain, Durham Ferry, and the SJCOE FabLab. Tracy Unified's new video shares why, as Dr. Dean Reese, TUSD Director of STEM, says "TUSD is a STEM district!"
Last week local educators and students learned about quantum computing, chip manufacturing, and artificial intelligence at UC Davis Engineering and the SJCOE FabLab at 2024 CITRIS Educator and Student Institutes. Over the week (Monday and Tuesday for teachers and Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday for students) participants visited the wind tunnel, computer chip manufacturing facility, and raptor labs. They heard lectures from brilliant professors, and even had liquid nitrogen frozen ice cream. They also programmed, engineered, tried out new technology gave lesson plan ideas and experienced our new quantum computing model.
Congratulations to Jennifer Robinson-Buck of Tokay High School for being this year's North Central Valley STEM Center's STEM Teacher of the Year! πππ

Data is a key aspect of STEM. Math, Science, and Computer Science all deal with data. This month our guest star for AcademiCS is Dr. David Rakestraw of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. He is the author of Physics with Phones a curriculum that focuses on data. Teachers who attend this event on April 16 from 5-7 PM and complete the asynchronous assignment earn a $125 stipend, and get to take back to their classroom this awesome FabLab invention. It gives a realtime data visualization of acceleration in 3 dimensions. It also will type gathered data into a spreadsheet so students can analyze experiments. Lastly, it also will output in real time to Scratch or MakeCode allowing students to engineer their own inventions. You an register at https://bit.ly/academicssymposiums . (P.S. Dr. Rakestraw will also be leading a Summer of CS PD the week of June 10-14 at the SJCOE FabLab on the same topic and there will be a stipend of $250 per day for participating public school educators. You can register for that at https://bit.ly/Summer2024PhysicsPhones ).
