As the winter season approaches, the Town of Stow is seeking per-diem plow drivers and plow contractors for the upcoming winter season. This is a great way to help out your community and make some extra cash! For plow contractors, we have increased our commitment bonus, increased rates, and added flexibility for the town to increase rates to cover fluctuations in fuel costs. And for per-diem drivers we offer competitive hourly rates for both CDL holders and non-CDL drivers.
The contractor packet is available on the Town of Stow Highway Department: https://www.stow-ma.gov/highway-department/pages/currently-seeking-plow-contractors-2022-2023-winter-season

Please be advised that over the next few weeks, Highway Department Tree Crews will be operating in the area of Harvard Acres to raise the canopy back to the required 12-14 feet as we have received complaints about brush hitting the tops of delivery vehicles.
Please drive slowly around crews, give them room to operate, and follow any hand signals given. Thank you for your patience while we attend to this matter.

Some photos from out recent surface treatment work.:
Chip sealing works to fill in large to medium voids in the road surface with rubberized stone chips. Then a layer of microsurface polymer is laid over the top to bind everything together and provide an additional protective layer and fill in any small cracks.
This serves to prevent water from getting into the road surface and expanding as it freezes, which in turn causes potholes. The cost to do a surface treatment and extend the lift of the road is approximately half of what would be spent on a traditional "mill and fill" paving job.
Using these parts of our pavement management toolkit preserves the roads instead of repaving them allows for more work to be done, thus allowing more road work to be done within our operating budget, as well as Chapter 90 (state funding) reimbursement and other funding sources (grants).
We'd like to thank all the residents and commuters for their patience while we completed this important work before winter and pothole season begins.
Thank you!

Please be advised that microsurface treatments will be going ahead on Monday, September 19th, 2022 on Great Road (from Lantern Lane to Harvard Road) and in the Crescent St / West Acton Rd / Library Hill area.
Contractors are expecting to get an early start, so please plan your Monday commutes accordingly. Residents and commuters are advised to expect delays and, if possible, seek alternate routes.

With autumn around the corner, the Stow Highway Department wanted to bring attention to a common cause of phosphates in our waterways -- leaf piles!
Excess phosphorus is a concern for most bodies of water; and most of the extra phosphorus found in our waterways is due to human activity. When there is too much in a water system, it dramatically increases the growth of blue-green algae. These algae gain a competitive advantage and tend to dominate the algal community where phosphorus is in excess. They are a particular concern because they release odiferous and even toxic compounds which can result in odor and taste problems in drinking water and allergic and even toxic effects for those who come in contact with them.
If you want to learn more about how to protect our stormwater and waterways, visit the Stormwater section of the Highway Department’s webpage.
Thank you!
