OAR has created or enhanced over 25 named reefs in the Big Bend Gulf and has extensively refurbished four other large man-made marine habitats in the region.
OAR is made up of a dues-paying membership base and a rigorous group of volunteers. The organization is governed by a non-paid board of directors which holds regular meetings open to all members. OAR works with cities and counties as well as state and federal governments and strives to operate at every level as a professional organization, as opposed to a club. OAR has lost our lease after 35 years of renting space with Florida Wildlife Federation and others on Blair Stone Rd. The tornado took some of the roof off, and it will take months to repair. We have been given a 30-day notice. If you know of ANYWHERE that OAR can rent storage (10 by 10, climate controlled, with 24-hour access) in Tallahassee for a reasonable cost, please contact us.

The Marantha Il is deploying the Rocky Burrous and Mike Johnston Memorial reefs this morning. Seas are one to two, look at that sunrise.
These are the four modules with the Memorial Plaques for Robby Redding, Carl Enis, Rocky Burrous and Mike Johnston that will be deployed (weather permitting) on Tuesday September 19th.
Tuesday September 19th Weather permitting
7:30-8:00 am Begin Deployment of Buddy Ward sites "F" and "G" which are for Rocky Burrous and Mike Johnston. Estimated time to deploy the two sites will be about an hour
11:30AM Arrive Carrabelle 10 Mile and deploy 4 modules at Robby's Reef. Estimated time to Deploy - 45 Minutes
12:45PM Arrive Carrabelle 20 Mile and deploy 6 Modules for Carl Enis. Estimated time to Deploy- One hour
2:00 pm Deployment Complete.
Walter Marine has set our deployment date for September 19, 2023 (weather permitting). OAR /FWC/NRDA (National Resource Damage Assessment) will deploy the Carl Enis Memorial Reef (6 super reefs) and enhance Robby's (4 super reefs). The Mike Johnston and the Rocky Burrous Memorial reefs (1 FLARS each) will be deployed in the Buddy Ward Reef area along with 16 FLARS (Florida Limestone Artificial Reef). OAR has had a busy few years and are excited about seeing the projects underwater. Stay turned for up dates.
OAR's Research Dive Team explored a potential new reef site 20 miles from the St Marks lighthouse on May 20th. Looks like we need to find another area because of all the live bottom.

It is no longer a Mystery Reef! The grand unveiling of the R.Z. "Sandy" Safley tribute reef went great. 30 modules were deployed by Walter Marine. FWC, CCA and OAR observed and monitored.
OAR is at it again! FWC and CCA have pooled their resources and will be deploying a "Mystery Reef" on Tuesday, August 23rd in Carrabelle 10 Mile, a site that OAR has permitted. Walter Marine will deploy 6 super reefs and 24 FLARS. Stay tuned for the big reveal.

The first deployment for the Nicholas Cureton Reef was in 2007. This video shows just a small portion of the reef, "Nicholas Cureton Reef South" - an addition that was added in July 2015.

7/25/2022. It was a dark and stormy morning as the OAR/CCA Dr. Bart Carey memorial reef was deployed in the Carrabelle 10 Mile area, south of Dog Island.
Artificial Reefs: Building a Future for Marine Recreation in the Florida Big Bend. Volunteers from the Organization for Artificial Reefs (OAR), a local non-profit agency, will talk about our local marine environment and how artificial reefs enhance the ecosystem. The presentation will include exciting video of reef deployments and marine life. Join us, Thursday July 21st, 2022 at 6:00 pm, at the Dr. B.L. Perry Jr. Branch Library.
