BELMONT by
Melissa McKinley
Ema Shqalsi
Carlos Rodriguez-Sierra
Mike Mohr

Spring 2022 Project Award Winner for LDE 522 (Advanced Landscape Architecture Studio II)

"The Belmont project is 50 miles west of downtown Phoenix in the Tonopah Desert. The boundary footprint is approximately 25,000 acres. Through innovation and desert adaptable solutions we answered the question of, β€œWhat does a smart desert city look like?” Our designs reintegrated nature back into the urban makeup and focused on the economy of ecology. The northern portion housed the ecologically focused projects in the Flatiron Foothills Preserve, including a wildlife crossing over the proposed multi-modal transit through the site. The southern portion became a logistics hub which can easily tie into existing infrastructure of the I-10 and future I-11 corridor. By centralizing heavier populations in already disturbed areas and building along existing infrastructure, we mitigated the disturbance to the surrounding Sonoran Desert. We had the unique opportunity to collaborate with a plethora of people during pre-project charettes, which helped inform our designs. These included, but is not limited to, Robyn Calihan, Linda Samuels, Les Meyers, Grady Gammage, Ian Dowdy, Jake Lenderking, and Mike Chester and his class. We greatly appreciate their time and insight."

TAS YAVI (THE SUN KEY COMMUNITY) by
Evan Sloan

Spring 2022 Project Award Winner for LDE 590 (Core Landscape Architecture Studio II)

"Tas Yavi or The Sun Key Community is a master plan concept on a 620-acre site that is curated to the beliefs and values of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community. The Layout concept for the master plan is derived from "The Man in The Maze" symbology as seen on this community's great seal.

This project focuses on creating a balance between past heritage & living in the present, creating a strong sense of community, and nature preservation by including spaces of cultural celebration and community gatherings, as well as leaving the natural marshland on the southern part of the site untouched.

This project taught me that the definition of sustainability doesn't necessarily have to be focused on just preserving physical resources, but sustainability and the idea of a sustainable community can be about preserving cultural values and beliefs as well.

This project could not be possible without the collaboration and support of my instructor Allyce Hargrove and my entire MLA cohort: DJ, Ramandeep, Lindsay, Suki, Meg, Roger, Zahra, Joanna, Mojtaba, and Rew"
