to this past summer when some of our graduating landscape architecture students had the opportunity to travel to Greece!
Through the Demetrios Vlachos Scholarship, students spent six weeks as landscape architecture interns at Perrotis College and The American Farm School (PC/AFS) in Thessaloniki, Greece. Students worked on campus landscape planning and design projects under the direction of the campus planning staff and administration. A project of theirs involved the design and development of innovative, low-cost rainwater management systems for the sustainable operation of the campus landscape and food production systems.
At the end of their internship, the students presented their work to the school’s staff, administration, and the American Farm School’s Board of Trustees. After their presentation, the students received high praise and their work will be implemented at the school in the years to come.
This was the 10th year The Design School’s landscape architecture program sent students to the American Farm School. Over the years the success of the students’ work has positively represented The Design School and Arizona State University. It has opened the door for future collaborations beyond the American Farm School, such as the Balkan Botanical Gardens in Northern Greece. The landscape architecture program is currently in talks with the Balkan Botanical Gardens about how to bring more opportunities for students in the future.

"Space architecture must envision the future, and the Prototyping the Future course gives students tools to do that, according to Kristy Kang, associate professor of urban media art and design in the School of Arts, Media and Engineering and The Design School, who has taught the course.
One way to visualize the future is to focus on something specific, and Kang had the class design projects about Phoenix and how transportation, energy, sustainability, food and habitats would look decades from now."
