We are excited about the work our colleagues are doing to support the LGBTQ+ community!
For June's "Inside the ASU Vaults" story, explore the LGBTQ+ Studies Collection and Bj Bud Memorial Archives!
Arizona State University’s LGBTQ+ Studies Collection isn’t just a repository for historically underrepresented communities; it’s a celebration of resistance and survival.
“When I think about the creation of this collection, it was an act of love and tool for healing,” said Nancy Godoy, director of the ASU Library Community Driven Archives and associate archivist of ASU Library's Chicano/a Research Collection. “It’s a newer collection but it has a rich legacy.”
The collection, located within the Community-Driven Archives Initiative, is the largest archival repository for LGBTQ+ history in Arizona. It comprises a handful of other archives that chronicle pioneering figures, elevate their voices and inspire the next generation of scholars to be agents of change.

ASU archivists hoping to learn more about early African American students | ASU News The eyes grab you first. They stare at you from the black-and-white photo, soft and, it seems, inquisitive. Our University Archivist, Shannon Walker, was recently invited to give a presentation at the Tempe History Museum. She discussed a recent effort to identify, recognize, and honor the first African American female graduate of ASU, Stella McHenry. This project has led to further endeavors to identify and tell the story of other early students of color. In addition, Shannon will discuss the importance of developing relationships with the families of alumni and the Black community in Phoenix in general, coinciding with the work her ASU colleague Jessica Salow, curator of Black Collections, is doing to document the Black community of Arizona.
Take time to listen to the presentation and engage with this important conversation!
