Happy ! Here's some facts about today! 📜✍️
November 8th was selected as the date for the annual National First-Generation College Celebration to honor the anniversary of the signing of the Higher Education Act of 1965. HEA was intended to help level a playing field that for too long had been weighed against Americans from minority and low-income backgrounds.
In addition to creating federal grants and loan programs to help students finance their educations, the legislation made key investments in higher education and ushered in programs, particularly Federal TRIO programs!
We have to mention own center when it comes to resources and support for First-Gen students! At our center, we offer intentional support for First-Gen students: providing connections to staff and faculty, guidance for growing your network, exclusive invitations to events and peer support from a success coach! We would love to connect with you to tell you more!
Being First-Gen is a reason to celebrate, not just your journey but also the strengths that brought you here! First-Gen students have many strengths that have helped them along their academic journey and that will help continue to drive them as they pursue their degree. If you are First-Gen, take a moment to step back and realize all the strengths that you already possess!
We're in Day 3 of our countdown to ! First-Gen @ Watts is a student organization that strives to close the gap that first generation college students face when attending university. They serve these students by providing them with academic and social opportunities, resources, and tips in order to succeed in their collegiate careers.
Day 2 of our celebration leading up to ! We're highlighting Global Education ()! As a First-Generation student, not only are you the first in your family to pursue a college/university degree, you also have the incredible opportunity to be the first in your family to ever participate in a Global Education program! Sometimes, finances can be a barrier to studying abroad, but we're here to tell you about some great scholarships!
