Cadets experience the NMC Commencement ceremony where they were addressed by Captain Scott Powell, Commissioning ceremony for cadets commissioning into the Naval Reserve, and GLMA Graduation dinner where graduates were able to ring the bell signaling they are officially off watch 🛎⚓️

Great Lakes Maritime Academy was established in 1969 as a maritime college to train men and women to be licensed mariners. Great Lakes Maritime is one of only six state-operated maritime academies in the United States and it is the only United States academy to offer a First Class Great Lakes Pilotage. Uniquely it is the only maritime academy located on fresh water.
The State of Michigan was originally a US Navy Stalwart-Class Tactical Auxiliary general ocean surveillance ship called the USNS Persistent, T-AGOS-6 . In 2002 the Great Lakes Maritime Academy negotiated a transfer for the ship to become a training ship for the college. Subsequently, the ship was overhauled and renamed T/S State of Michigan.

Preparations continue! Cadets practice loading techniques and taking charge as they load life raft canisters onto the T/S State of Michigan

Our cadets can usually be found in uniform, working hard, but occasionally you can find them enjoying the perks of being a college student at Northwestern Michigan College just like everybody else

Time for a closer look! 🔎Cadets and Staff assisted a diver yesterday as they went into the lake for a closer look at our training vessel's rudders, propellers, sea chest, bow thruster, and etc. looking for debris or any maintenance needs!

It's hard to believe that the end of the semester and the start to the cadet pre-sail is right around the corner! So much is happening on and around the T/S State of Michigan to get it ready to set sail with our cadets!
