Your eye works much like a camera, using a lens to focus on an image. If your camera lens became cloudy, you’d have a hard time viewing the world around you.
Just like a camera, the lenses in your eyes can become cloudy as you age, making it harder for you to see. This clouding is a natural condition known as cataracts.

If you're experiencing a change in your vision, call us to schedule a consultation at (520) 815-5050.

MYTH: Cataracts "grow back."

FACT: No. Cataracts develop as the lens's cells die and accumulate; they are not a "growth" that sits on top of the eye. Occasionally patients do develop a different secondary cataract, though. In addition, when the membrane that holds the new lens implant becomes cloudy, vision can be compromised. But this can easily be treated with laser surgery, a painless, 15-minute procedure usually done at a doctor's office.

You may have noticed that we ask for someone else to drive you to and from your cataract surgery appointment. The reasoning behind this is that local anesthesia is administered during the procedure and also that your eyesight will remain blurry for up to a few days afterward as your eye recovers.

Laser surgery offers advantages for specific types of cataracts. With laser technology, the surgeon has increased accuracy and precision compared to standard cataract surgery.

Surgery outcomes are connected to the ultimate desired result. If the outcome is to reduce reliance on glasses, laser surgery for cataracts is often the preferred method.

Laser cataract surgery provides precise placement for a multifocal IOL and reduces dependence on corrective eyewear after surgery.

Many people think that you can make cataracts worse by reading, sewing, and engaging in other close-up tasks, but that isn’t true. People have a good reason for feeling this way, though. Cataracts cause blurry vision, and you are more likely to notice the issue when you perform close-up tasks. Because of that, people think that these tasks make the problem worse.

In 1747, Jacques Daviel, a French ophthalmologist, successfully performed the first operation to remove cataracts. As the entire lens was removed, the procedure was only performed for the most severe cases. Unfortunately, medicine had not advanced quite as much in other areas. Fine sutures had not been developed yet, so the wound remained open. The patient needed to be kept immobile, so sandbags were used until the wound healed!

There may not be any visible signs that you have a cataract. It is more important that you notice any changes in your eyesight. The first sign of cataracts is likely to be your eyesight becoming cloudy. You may notice fuzzy spots and have difficulty seeing at night.

If you’re experiencing sudden or permanent cloudiness in your field of vision, contact us at (520) 815-5050.

There are a lot of remedies out there for cataracts, but the truth is, surgery is your only viable option. Eye drops and other remedies don’t remove cataracts. You need to have an eye surgeon remove the affected lens and replace it with a clear one.
