I tell my potential clients who are interviewing me that I'm a "middle of the road" type of midwife. I'm not super medical, but I'm also not super crunchy. I use pitocin to treat a hemorrhage, start IVs when needed or would be helpful, run labs to make sure my clients' bodies are functioning as well as possible and monitor babies to make sure they are handling the stress of labor. But I also use herbs, tinctures and supplements when something isn't time sensitive, discuss the importance of using food to increase health and prevent risks, and encourage moms to listen to their bodies and trust their intuitions.

There's a time and a place for all things, and when you only learn how to do one type of midwifery (either overly medical or not medical enough), you are doing a disservice to mom and baby. Sometimes, a small medical intervention (like giving a shot of pitocin after birth to prevent or treat a hemorrhage), can prevent much larger ones (like having to be transferred to the hospital for a blood transfusion and feeling weak for weeks after birth due to anemia), and help a mom and baby to feel their best. Make sure your care provider is well rounded, practices safely and evidenced-based medicine, and is meeting all your needs.

(By the way, I fully agree in praying for a birth, as I pray to God before and during each one, but I don't only pray for help, and then sit idly by waiting for Him to step in, while sitting on my hands and not using the skills He gave me to step in and save a life!)

The risk of rupture is still pretty low after 2 Csections. This is one of the reasons that we support VBACs.

The often-cited uterine rupture rate after two cesareans of 0.9% – 1.8% is based on a 49% – 65% induction and augmentation rate. This is an important factor to consider anytime we discuss VBA2C (vaginal birth after two cesareans.)

As a result, it’s possible that the rate of uterine rupture during a spontaneous labor after two cesareans is lower than 0.9% – 1.8%. In fact, Macones revealed that of the 379 people who labored spontaneously, 3 had a uterine rupture for a rate of 0.8%.

This week, I went on vacation and saw one of these lactation pods at only one of the three airports that I went to. Having my first baby at 18, I would have liked for something like this to be available as I was hesitant to nurse in public. By the third baby and 13 years later, I would just do it where he needed to eat. What about you? How do you prefer to breastfeed?

Timeline photos 07/12/2023

Have you been told that your baby needs to feed X times a day, for a certain amount of time? There is no wrong or right number of times for a baby to feed, because all babies are different and have different needs. Comparing your baby's feeding "patterns" to another baby's could be a B***y Trap!

Our Story

Mercy Eizenga LM, CPM was the head midwife and owner of Comforts of Home Midwifery for 12 years. She recently teamed up with Cherished Birth Center to offer home and birth center births in Tyler, TX and most of East Texas.

Mercy was first exposed to homebirth when she witnessed the birth of her little brother at the age of 7. Her interest in natural childbirth grew with the birth of her first child and then attending Bradley Natural Childbirth classes with a friend a year and a half later. Attending her first birth as a doula verified that she was called to be a midwife. Mercy attended the Association of Texas Midwives Training Program and completed an apprenticeship with what is now the Corpus Christi Birth Center. She holds a Texas state license, is listed with the state of Oklahoma, and holds her Certified Professional Midwife with the North American Registry of Midwives.
