The school gained its name from a very special long-time Visalian, Manuel F. Hernandez, who called Visalia ‘home’ for over 65 years—a man who very quickly was better known as the ‘Godfather of North Visalia.’ Coming originally from Mexico at age 10, he made his way to eventually land in Visalia

Education is an essential service, and Visalia Unified School District is committed to providing the best District programs possible for our students, while diligently protecting the health and safety of our community. Because the circumstances surrounding the pandemic are continually changing, we want to give parents the option to choose which learning program they prefer for their student for the 2021-2022 school year. VUSD is planning for a full return to in-person learning which includes a full-day school schedule.

If you are not ready to send your children back to a school for in-person learning, we have an option for your student to continue with the online, full-distance learning in fall 2021.

We have created a survey to gather information from parents who plan to enroll their students into an online, full distance-learning program.

You have until Wednesday, April 28, 2021 to complete the survey. Parents opting not to take the survey will have their students automatically enrolled for in-person instruction at their school site.

Your feedback is invaluable. Please click the link below to complete the survey.

Dear VUSD Students and Families:

We have had some instances where students have recorded their class on Zoom and then posted the recording on TikTok or other social media platforms. This is a reminder that students and family members are not allowed to photograph or record their teacher or other students during online instruction. Recording or photographing others during online instruction is illegal and a violation of the Distance Learning Agreement.

It is illegal to record any instruction or educational session without the prior written consent of the principal and teacher or service provider. Smartphones and other mobile communication devices shall not be used in any manner which infringes on the privacy rights of any other person. There are disciplinary and legal consequences for violating the law.

Parents, please work with your students. They should not be using their phones to listen to music, text or FaceTime their friends, take pictures, or record during class time. Phones should be put away during class time.

Thank you

The District has scheduled meal pack pickups from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and from 5 p.m. -7 p.m. to accommodate students and parents. Student and/or parent, with their meal card in hand, will be able to pick up meals at the designated school sites only. The student and/or parent may only pick up ONE meal kit per week either during the morning or evening pickup times.

Student Technology Support Request 08/12/2020

Online Learning Success Tips for the Start of a New Year:

Tech Issues

· Don’t call the teacher. Teachers are NOT tech support.

· Submit a ticket to the Help Desk for Help:

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdut2XZ3X3Uh75qCPvy6x-FLfDqk2mIb408nlaMs-_sLMxizA/viewform

· Last resort call: 559-690-3002

Remember: Hundreds of other students are experiencing technical difficulties at the same time you are. Submitting a request ticket secures your spot in line for getting assistance.

Curriculum and Assignment Questions

· Don’t call the teacher. Email the teacher.

· Teachers are in class. An email allows them to know you need help and get back to you by the next business day.

· Detailed emails help the teacher answer ALL of your questions.

· If you request a phone call only, without details, there is a significant chance the response time will be much slower. Remember, teachers are one person. There are dozens of other people asking them questions at the same time.

Realistic Expectations

· If something goes wrong, it is more than likely not an emergency situation. Be patient and submit a ticket and then send your teacher a quick email letting him or her know your issues. Teachers will give students and families grace due to the likelihood of tech issues and likewise students and families should give teachers grace.

· Do your part and be prepared. Students and parents should make sure they are ready to get started daily, are logged in, and have charged their Chromebooks. If you do this, you will be less frustrated with the process.

Communication

Be kind. Your teachers did not ask for this. In fact, they fought hard to try and make this a better experience for your student. If you send them an email, understand they are as frustrated as you are, and they will do their best to help. Be kind, don’t be a keyboard warrior. We are all in this together.

Student Technology Support Request Use this form to request support for your school-supplied technology devices (Chromebook or Hotspot). We will address your issue in the order it was received.

Important information.

Welcome, or welcome back, to Manuel Hernandez School for the 2020-2021 school year! We are looking forward to an exciting and productive year. This year will look different from what we have experienced in the past. We greatly appreciate your patience as we work to learn a whole new way of teaching and connecting with students.

Our school website has a detailed “Start of the Year” Informational Sheet https://www.vusd.org/mfhernandez. It contains information about Chromebook and text book distribution, what instruction will look like with distant learning, and important dates for the start of the school year. Please take a few minutes to carefully review all information as it contains a lot of helpful details, including about when and how you will find out about your student’s assigned teacher and AM or PM assignment for online learning.

You can find this sheet on our website under Start of the Year Information icon. Also, on our website the schedule for Chromebook and text book Distribution can be found on the icon Chromebook Distribution.

Please contact our office if you have any additional questions or concerns. Thank you!

Here is the Chromebook and Textbook Distribution Schedule. If you have specific questions I would advise you to call the school office.

08/04/2020

Husky Parents: Please see below for information regarding Chromebook and Textbook distribution. These letters along with additional information were mailed out this morning so please be on the lookout!🐾

08/04/2020

Due to the continued surge in COVID-19 cases in our county and surrounding counties and the overwhelming requests by families who want to secure full-time distance learning, we will start the school year with all students learning remotely from their regular school of residency. This means that students will be assigned to classes with teachers from their regular school of attendance.

VUSD will commit to remote learning at home for all students through their regular school of attendance for the first nine weeks of the semester and then we will reevaluate the situation. Toward the end of the first quarter, we will reevaluate and determine if we are able to meet the criteria for elementary students to return to school through the state waiver process. We will also examine if we are able to have other students return to school using social distancing and safety precautions. As always, we will continue to work closely with our health officials.

Technology Information:

Your child’s school principal will send you a schedule for Chromebook distribution and pick-up.
You will receive a letter in the mail explaining how to connect your Chromebook to WiFi, how your student will log into the Chromebook, and available technology support.

Please understand that we are not able to return to school in person until the pandemic metrics in our county improve. It is imperative that all of us wear face coverings, follow social distancing protocols, and avoid gatherings. Our students, staff, families, health care workers, grocery workers, and our community at large are all depending on us to do our part to make our community healthier.

Change to Meal Service

This summer, Visalia Unified School District continued to provide grab & go meals to the children of our community through the Seamless Summer Food Service Program. Although the Seamless Summer Food Service Program will end on July 31, 2020, VUSD will begin providing meals to VUSD students through the National School Lunch Program beginning on Thursday, August 13, 2020.

Since meals will no longer be available through the Seamless Summer Food Service Program, but rather the National School Lunch Program, the District is only able to serve enrolled VUSD students. While VUSD will be participating in distance learning when school resumes, families will be able to pick up a five-day meal pack consisting of five breakfast meals and five lunch meals per enrolled student. Meals must be picked up from the student’s home school site or their feeder middle school. Unlike this summer’s grab & go meal distribution, buses cannot be used for distributing meals during the school year under the National School Lunch Program guidelines.

VUSD students will receive a meal card that will be scanned by school staff when students pick up their grab & go meals. Student and/or parent, with their meal card in hand, will be able to pick up meals at the student’s home school or their feeder middle school. Details on how and when students will receive their meal cards will be shared with families in the near future.

The District has scheduled meal pack pickups for every Thursday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. to accommodate students and parents. The first pick up will be on Thursday, August 13, 2020.
