Visalia! Councilman Emmanual Soto has requested our support on the Visalia Cemetery proposal:
Hello Visalia,
At the next council meeting on May 1, at 7pm there is an item regarding the Cemetery. The Visalia Cemetery District is asking to change the zoning on 16 residential lots to quasi-public in order to expand the cemetery. They also requested a conditional use permit to expand their area of influence to purchase more homes east of the cemetery across Turner Street. The planning commission approved all these items and now it is coming to the city council for approval. The cemetery has been purchasing properties to the west and east end for the past 15 years. A previous city council approved the conditional use permit then, to allow the cemetery district to start purchasing these properties. Things have changed. The 16 lots that will come to the council are owned by the cemetery district and were purchased legally. They are getting rid of single families homes that are no longer availble in this price range anywhere else in Visalia. In a time when homeless population is increasing and housing is becoming more scarce, is the visalia you want to see. A couple of homes on the west end of the cemetery have already been torn down.
As the years go by we will need more space for our cemetery. The cemetery board and their engineer ague that they dont want to open a 2nd location becauase it will increase cost when families bury their loved ones. A previous council approved their master plan 15 years ago and he questions why that should change now. Times have changed, and in Visalia there is a lack of affordable single family homes. As a city councilmen, the council needs to hear what you think. I would encourage you to come to the council meeting on the 1st to speak on this item. If you can not make it please write a email to our city council members via email ([email protected]). Please feel free to call Emmanuel Soto at 5598091500 and below I will link the details of this agenda item.
