These looked kind of fun at first. Then again, adding an explosion to a fire did seem kind of wrong. The CPSC has issued their evauation of these products. Let's stick with the traditional portable fire extinguisher for now...like the quality units offered at Albany Fire Extinguisher!

Happy Birthday to an AFE legend, the late Joe Muraski. He would be 96 today. Joe was a dedicated AFE staff member for a quarter century. We are fondly reminded of him almost daily around here. There is a plaque hanging in our office dedicated to Joe. It lists his "3 Rules" (which he would share with each new employee who came on during his tenure...sometimes repeatedly):
1) Work starts at 8. Be here a quarter of.
2) When you use a tool, put it back where you got it from.
3) If you can't work and talk at the same time, keep your mouth shut.

How often do fire extinguishers require Inspection?
An inspection is defined by NFPA as "A quick check that a fire extinguisher is in its designated place, that it has not been actuated or tampered with, and that there is no obvious physical damage or condition to prevent its operation." This inspection is to take place monthly. Knowing that, a customer of ours might be wondering why AFE only comes in for inspection once per year. That is because we are not coming in for Inspection, but for Maintenance....which is defined by NFPA as "A thorough examination of the fire extinguisher that is intended to give maximum assurance that a fire extinguisher will operate effectively and safely and to determine if physical damage or condition will prevent its operation, if any repair or replacement is necessary, and if hydrostatic testing or internal maintenance is required." This Maintenance is to take place on an annual basis and requires specialized knowledge, training and a certification. So the Inspection is a quick monthly check which can be done by just about anyone, while the Maintenance is a thorough annual examination which is to be done by professionals. We have many customers who prefer to count on AFE for their monthly inspections and their annual Maintenance . We often find that people use the terms "recharge" and "maintenance" synonymously. Fact is, fire extinguishers don't normally require recharging unless they have been discharged, damaged or are due for an internal maintenance or test which requires the extinguisher to come apart (normally every 5 to 6 years). People sometimes ask us how fires start. We are not fire investigation experts here at AFE, but we do read the NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) Journal and it often contains such information. Here are a few excerpts, abbreviated for.... brevity.
..clothing was ignited by a lit cigarette as resident smoked while using an oxygen delivery device in her bedroom...embers and burning debris dropped onto a carpet while resident stoked a fire in his woodstove...a cigarette was deposited into a recycling bin stored under a countertop in the kitchen...an electrical fault in an entertainment center ignited wood furnishings in the living room...an overheated cell phone ignited a couch in the living room...a candle ignited paper on an adjacent wall board...a va**ng device exploded in a man's pocket...fire originated in the engine of a garaged vehicle and ignited the wood framing of the structure.

So the answer is...you name it. That's how fires start. Sometimes caution and common sense can help prevent fires. Other times, maybe not. All we can do is be prepared. Smoke detectors and fire extinguishers folks!! Stay safe.

Maybe a little late in the season to be reminding folks about boating safety, but please know you can count on AFE to help with your Coast Guard requirements. Boats up to 26' in length require one fire extinguisher, while those between 26' & 40' require two extinguishers. Anybody out there with a boat longer than 40'??

While there are some very substantial benefits associated with multi-purpose ABC dry chemical fire extinguishers, there is one heavy drawback...BIG MESS! Some environments call for clean agent extinguishers, whose discharge does not leave behind a harmful residue. Learn more in our video.
