Wartburg Accelerated Ministry Program
The Accelerated Ministry Program is designed to reduce the time and cost to become a Lutheran (ELCA) pastor. You'll finish with two degrees — a B.A.
(Wartburg College) and M.Div. (Wartburg Theological Seminary) — in six years instead of eight!
Join us tomorrow for AMP student Brady Fox’s senior chapel!
We have a Senior Chapel tomorrow! Brady Fox is a 3rd year Accelerated Ministry Program student and is originally from Kingston, Oklahoma. In his time at Wartburg he was formerly Chaplain of Kantorei and has been involved in various SLCM groups and events. His future plans are attend Wartburg Theological Seminary in Dubuque and go back south as soon as possible. All are welcome!
Check out Ellie's story to see how her pastor, congregation and the Wartburg Accelerated Ministry Program have all supported her calling!
You can learn more about the program ➡️ www.wartburg.edu/ministry
Know of high school students who should be looking into our program? Let us know at the link above, and we'll reach out to them with more info!
When Ellie Nabholz expressed an interest in ministry as a high school student, her pastor at Zion Lutheran Jubilee in rural La Porte City encouraged her to be more involved by giving a message, helping with communion and doing the readings.
Now in her second year at Wartburg in the Accelerated Ministry Program, Ellie says that affirmation of her ministry gifts through her congregation has been important in recognizing her calling. “I never thought of leading worship,” she said. “It was my pastor who helped push me into that role of helping lead worship and helping with Confirmation and Sunday School.”
Even through the pandemic, Nabholz still experienced the camaraderie, mentoring and preparation that marks the accelerated program. “I like the close-knittedness that we have in the program," she says.
“It was the people that drew me in,” she says. “I found my people in this program.”
Read more about Ellie's experience at www.wartburg.edu/ellie-accelerated-ministry-program/, and learn more about the Accelerated Ministry Program at www.wartburg.edu/ministry. Students in the program earn their BA and MDiv degrees in six years instead of eight in this partnership with Wartburg Theological Seminary in Dubuque!
A few AMP students attended the installation service of Bishop Kevin Jones of the Northeastern Iowa Synod. The Wartburg crew poses here with presiding Bishop of the ELCA, Bishop Elizabeth Eaton!
Lots of double burgers!
We had a great time welcoming our new AMP students during our New Student Retreat before they began Wartburg Orientation with the rest of the Class of 2025. 🍊
Classes officially begin tomorrow and this crew is ready to AMP IT UP this school year!!!
Congratulations to double-burger (Wartburg College and Wartburg Seminary) alum Tyler Hoey. He will be ordained on Saturday, July 24th!
Shout-out to Ellie, who just finished her first year in the Wartburg Accelerated Ministry Program, for working in camping ministry this summer at Camp Ewalu as part of her calling! Bible camps have played a big role for many in ministry by helping them realize their gifts and by developing their faith ⛺️
Introducing our 2021 Summer Staff...
Matthias Letsche is an incoming AMP student. Like many in the program he is working at camp this summer.
God’s blessings to you Matthias. We’re excited to have you in the Accelerated Ministry Program!
Introducing our 2021 Summer Staff...
Congrats to AMP student Kellie Escovy who is receiving the college’s peacemaker award. If you know Kellie this won’t surprise you. She has a passion for peace and justice that will be a blessing to the church!
Not only is it "May the Fourth," the unofficial Star Wars holiday... but May 4 this year is also the 500th anniversary of when Martin Luther was kidnapped (by friends, fortunately) and taken to Wartburg Castle in Germany for his own safety!
The creative force is strong at Wartburg, and our Marketing & Communication staff had an idea to mash up the two events. Students in the Accelerated Ministry Program and Department of Religion were invited to be the "stars" in this re-enactment video... bonus! 🙌
Special thanks to the Rev. Liz Albertson, an alumna of both Wartburg College and Wartburg Theological Seminary (a double 'Burger), for writing up the text in the first part of the video. She is now vice president for admissions and student services at the seminary.
At Wartburg College, Dr. Caryn Riswold contributed historical consultation and props, and Dr. Kristin Wendland loaned her Greek Bible. Team effort!
In Wartburg's Accelerated Ministry Program, even first-year students have opportunities to practice ministry! Bailey Erickson of Mason City was the assisting minister in our Ash Wednesday service recently. Read about her Wartburg experience and how she is learning more about her calling to ministry at the link.
Bailey also emphasizes the role of pastors, youth ministers, parents and other adults in the congregation to help affirm the gifts of high school students: "When young people hear from someone else that they have something, that they can be something in the church, that external call is really important."
You can refer a young person to Wartburg's program at www.wartburg.edu/ministry ✝️
Time together as an AMP cohort is time well spent!
We're spending time focusing on words to strengthen our community. Love. Grace. Trust. Openness. Understanding. What are you focusing on?
(We also had lots of fun metal stamping keychains to help remind ourselves of those words!)

Even during the pandemic, Wartburg College is able to bring interesting guests "to" campus! All are invited to meet author Chris Stedman, whose book "IRL: Finding Realness, Meaning, and Belonging in Our Digital Lives" was the January selection for the Wartburg Book Club, at the end-of-month virtual book meeting at 5 p.m. CST Jan. 28. Even if you didn't read the book, please join in for this Zoom conversation with Chris. He came in person to campus two years ago to speak about his book "Faitheist: How an Atheist Found Common Ground with the Religious."
Being part of the Accelerated Ministry Program at Wartburg means getting to meet people with diverse experiences and viewpoints... and we're glad to be able to share this virtual experience widely!
Here's a fun story about one of our Accelerated Ministry Program students, Jared McLey! His tattoo really speaks to his heart for youth ministry and the experiences that have helped nurture his faith and calling.
Another way to nurture the faith of young people is to affirm the gifts that you see in them. And if you know a high school student who has gifts for ministry, tell them so and refer them to our AMP program at Wartburg! Not only will they graduate with two degrees in six years, they'll have less debt and lots of mentoring and support to help them discern God's calling. Learn more and submit a referral at www.wartburg.edu/ministry ✝️
We have a special resource for those of you planning worship services for the Christmas season... you are invited to make use of special music performed by Wartburg's student ensembles from our annual Christmas with Wartburg production. 🎄

O. Jay and Pat Tomson of Mason City have provided a $200,000 challenge gift commitment to support students enrolled in the growing Accelerated Ministry Program, a partnership of Wartburg College and Wartburg Theological Seminary.
The Accelerated Ministry Program (AMP) streamlines the preparation for pastoral ministry for first-career ministerial students. AMP includes three years of undergraduate education at Wartburg College, where they earn a bachelor's degree. Students spend the final three years serving in a congregation while completing their master’s studies through Wartburg Seminary. Students can choose among a variety of undergraduate majors in addition to religion and can become a Lutheran minister in six years instead of eight.
Since the program was initiated in 2018, the Tomsons have made lead challenge gifts each year. This challenge grant is available to students who plan to enroll in the Accelerated Ministry Program at Wartburg College in 2021. Students who receive this scholarship also will receive a scholarship from the Kern Foundation, along with other financial aid from the college with the goal of minimizing debt throughout the entire program.
The program includes one-on-one mentoring, diverse experiential learning opportunities, a well-rounded curriculum and overall discernment support. Fifteen students are currently enrolled, including three juniors who will soon transition to their seminary courses and serving a congregation. Learn more about the Tomsons and their generous gift (and respond to the challenge) at the link below.
To learn more about the Accelerated Ministry Program and refer a student for our staff to reach out to, go to www.wartburg.edu/ministry. Be sure to share with high school students who have the gifts for ministry! 🧡
