Getting together is the best part of Homecoming & Family Weekend — and beyond your old roommates, classmates, and pals from around campus, we're welcoming several specific groups Oct. 17-20:
🍊 Our class reunions, of course: '79, '84, '89, '94, '99, '04, '09, '14, and '19.
🍊 Our Golden Knights who graduated 50 or more years ago, with special invitations to the classes of '74, '69, '64, and '59.
🍊 Former residents of Wartburg Hall.
🍊 The 2004 men's soccer team, which advanced to the Elite Eight.
And there are the groups that gather every year, like Wartburg Choir alumni, music folks more broadly, our LGBTQIA+ community, former residents of Vollmer House and Ketha House, and JComm grads.
Everyone's gonna be here — will you? Register now at www.wartburg.edu/homecoming!
Now that we've welcomed our new undergraduates to campus, it's time to welcome our new students to the Master of Arts in Leadership program, including these six individuals who are helping us pilot a graduate assistantship program. Over the next two years, these folks will help out in Sports Information, the Academic Resource Center, Admissions, Institutional Advancement, and Student Life, as well as with the football program.
We are excited for their enhanced learning experience as graduate assistants and for their contributions to our campus community within their professional roles.

Bret Billet, Wartburg College professor of political science, has published “Navigating Global Environmental Sustainability: Enriching Well-Being in the Wake of the Great Recession.” The book is the culmination of more than a decade of research into the impact of a recession on sustainable environmental consumption.
“The government has to get involved to provide ecological incentives, especially during recessionary years, when companies are looking for money,” he said. “This is a mutually beneficial relationship whereby one doesn’t have to choose between support for the environment or support for the economy. Recessionary periods provide a great opportunity for government and corporations to support both.”

First-year move-in is only a few days away. Our incoming students have received lots of information about what to expect, but here is something just for the parents, guardians, and champions who are also prepping for this momentous occasion.
We loved seeing some of our Cedar Valley alumni and friends at our Day of Service & Outfly. We started the day helping Habitat for Humanity at a current build and in the ReStore in Waterloo. After volunteering, we shared a meal and enjoyed good conversation and lawn games at Greenwood. Thank you to everyone who helped make this day a success!

The Wartburg-Waverly Sports & Wellness Center will be renamed in honor of former president Jack Ohle and his wife, Kris. We will celebrate the rededication of the Ohle Wartburg-Waverly Sports & Wellness Center (The W) on Thursday, Oct. 17, during Homecoming & Family Weekend.
Ohle served the college from 1998 to 2008. During his tenure, he transformed the look of the campus, building new student housing — Knights Village and Löhe Hall — a new campus entrance, Walston-Hoover Stadium, and the Wartburg-Waverly Sports & Wellness Center. The Science Center, Saemann Student Center, and Vogel Library also were renovated during his decade on campus.
The renaming also kicks off a $5 million fundraising initiative to enhance and maintain the college’s recreational and wellness environment. Gary and Donna Hoover, of Scottsdale, Ariz., formerly of Ames, and Fred and Sue Hagemann, of Naples, Fla., and Waverly, provided leadership gifts for the appeal.

Dr. Caryn Riswold recently published her fourth book, “ReEngaging ELCA Social Teaching on Abortion,” which calls on readers to reflect on the ELCA’s 1991 social statement on abortion in the 21st century.
Adopted during the 1991 ELCA Churchwide Assembly, the 12-page statement provides guidance for pastoral care and deliberation regarding unintended pregnancies as well as basic themes for reflecting on and discussion of public policy issues. Riswold’s new book looks at the social, political and legal contexts that have changed since the statement was issued.
