Last week our team celebrated Org Day at Camp Buckner! The day was filled with games, great food, and a lot of laughs! We were extremely lucky to have such a beautiful day to enjoy the Camp Buckner grounds and lake.

We would like to take this time to thank our team, once again, for all of the hard work that they give to the Directorate of Public Works here at West Point. We would also like to thank our Org Day Committee, led by Ms. Cheryl Rau, for putting together a wonderful day to remember with our team. Thank you for all that you do!

Please see below for a message from our Natural Resources Branch regarding bear safety and how to prevent bears in your area!

DPW Natural Resources Section reminds all personnel and residents about nuisance blacks bears on the installation and what we can all do to help better prevent, manage, and respond to bears. This information is meant not to frighten or frustrate personnel but to educate and inform personnel about how to better coexist with resident bears and benefit both people and bears.

WHAT ARE NUISANCE BEARS? – Nuisance bears are bears that enter human areas to raid food and garbage for food. They alarm people, damage property, and make a mess. Inexperienced, juvenile bears are more likely to be nuisance offenders rather than experienced, older bears but bears of any age can become a nuisance. Bears can be a nuisance throughout their active season in spring, summer, and early fall.

PREVENTING BEAR ISSUES - 1. Never feed bears, 2. Secure all trash in bags then put all bags in totes & dumpsters and lock those receptacles if you can; 3. Clean, treat & time trash – Wash out recyclables, disposable containers and time trash to pick up day can be useful. Treating trash with Ammonia, Cayenne, or Pepper can be useful in addition to bagging & toting garbage but is not a substitute for toting and dumpstering garbage; 4. Clean/secure all grills, petfood, and bird feeding areas.

RESPONDING TO BEARS – 1. Stay calm – Bears are normally shy and will flee, do not panic/run/approach/corner bear; 2. Stay away – get to or stay at a safe distance by slowly backing away and getting indoors if you can. Do not approach to take photos or stay remain in area if bear approaches, 3. Be loud – if a bear gets too close to you, your home, or camp, make noise at it from a safe distance, yell/whistle/clap hands, etc. to scare it away, 4. Be big – Stay in a group if together or make yourself seem large.

KEEP WATCH, REPORT ISSUES & SHARE INFO – Keep watch when bear leaves area to see if it returns. Report bear issues to Military Police Service Desk at x3333. Be sure to report 1. Exact time, 2. Exact place of issue, 3. Nature of issue, 4. Where bear is now if known, and 5. Your name and contact information. This information is important for dispatchers and responders to respond to a problem. Share this information with your neighbors, coworkers, friends, and family.

Yesterday, DPW helped congratulate and welcome back the USMA class of 2028 from Cadet Basic Training! These new cadets completed a 12-mile March Back from Lake Frederick and were greeted by many proud loved ones. In preparation for the event, our team worked to make sure The Plain was in pristine condition and spent the morning building a stage in front of Quarters 100. The Directorate of Public Works would like to formally congratulate the class of 2028 on a job well done and wish each new cadet the best of luck in the upcoming year!

Thank you to West Point Garrison and Community for sharing a few great shots of our team from a different angle!

Mr. Chris Killough and the Natural Resources Department recently responded to a call for a hawk in distress. Upon arrival, they discovered this red-tailed hawk needed medical attention and transferred it to a local animal hospital. As a friendly reminder when it comes to all wildlife, we ask the community to never feed wildlife, keep your distance from wildlife and report any wildlife nuisance issues.

Our Natural Resources team are experts in handling wildlife in the most safe and secure way possible. Great job, team!

The 2024 Steam Shutdown was a success here at West Point! Through the collaborative efforts of our Plant Operations Branch, Pipe & Heat Shop and Contract Management Branch, our team was able to complete our annual maintenance and inspection of equipment at the West Point Power Plant. This task takes about 6 weeks to complete but planning for this event started months ago. We’d like to give these teams a huge round of applause for the incredible work they’ve done during this time. A concrete work of art! Our Masonry team spent the morning creating a walkway and a sidewalk for some of our beloved buildings on post. Not only does this team work hard to get the job done but their attention to detail for each project that they complete is brilliant! Our team created an ADA mat by placing a red coloring on the concrete, which is spread with a concrete trowel, and pressing a rubber stamp to create the desired texture. ADA mats are used to show where a pedestrian may be coming close to vehicular traffic. They are placed where concrete sidewalks meet street pavement. Looks great, team!

When it rains, it pours!
Last weekend’s storm left debris and broken trees all over post. Our Land Maintenance team has been working to remove debris and dissolve dangerous conditions as quickly as possible for our community. Pictured below is a tree located by Buffalo Soldier Field that split and fell over causing a mess. Thankfully, our tree crew was able to safely get the other section of the tree to the ground and distribute materials accordingly. Thank you to all of the crews who are helping West Point recover from last weekend’s storm, we couldn’t do it without you!

Last week our Masons team and Roads team worked together to lay out the groundwork for success, by repairing one of the catch basins on post. The Vactor Truck was used to clean debris from the catch basin and sewer lines underground. Our teams completed this project by repaving the affected road and laying down new cement to create a beautiful, freshly paved sidewalk for pedestrians. Outstanding work!

Our Wood Shop has been working on a very special project! In October of 2017, West Point experienced a devastating thunderstorm that caused one of the trees in front of Quarters 101 to fall over. That tree was originally planted in honor of the USMA class of 1954. The lumber from that tree was taken back to our wood shop to dry and has been crafted into a step that is placed in front of the Superintendent’s house for special occasions as well as a storing case to keep the step in pristine condition. This project would not have been possible if it weren’t for Mr. Tim Mcgivney, Wood Crafter, who has spent many hours perfecting this piece. Mr. Mcgivney has crafted this entire piece completely by hand. His talent for woodworking is unmatched, we are very lucky to have him on our team. Wonderful job!
