This week Cadets Samuel Bedor and Alex Liesen accompanied by ChemE faculty members presented posters and oral talks at the 2022 AIChE Annual conference in Phoenix, AZ. CDT Alex Liesen won second place in the undergraduate poster competition in the Materials Engineering and Sciences division. CDT Samuel Bedor presented a poster in the Fuels, Petrochemicals, and Energy division.
Congratulations ChemE team!
Congratulations to COL Corey James, Dr. Robert Jane, 1LT Tae Young Kim (Chem Eng, ’21), CDT Samantha Rose (Elec Eng, ’25), CDT Emilee Mossman, (Chem Eng, ’24) and Emily Glass on their recent publication in the journal Energies. Their paper, titled “Developing AI/ML Based Predictive Capabilities for a Compression Ignition Engine Using Pseudo Dynamometer Data” presents the development of a hybrid machine learning approach to approximate the in-cylinder conditions of a compression ignition engine to inform future optimization and control efforts. The integration of artificial intelligence enables powerful predictive capabilities that can lead to improved efficiency and resilience of these devices and other complex systems.

Way to go Dr. Nagelli!
The Dean of the Academic Board and the Superintendent of the Academy formally recognized Dr. Sonya Bierbower, Dr. Ken McDonald, and Dr. Enoch Nagelli for their appointment as Associate Professors in the Department of Chemistry and Life Science. Dr. Bierbower recently joined the department after teaching at William Patterson University and will teach in the Life Science Program. Dr. Ken McDonald joined the department after teaching Materials Science in the Department of Civil Mechanical Engineering at the Academy for the past six years and will teach in the Chemistry Program. Dr. Nagelli joined the department as an Assistant Professor in 2016 and currently serves as the Chemical Engineering Program Director. Congratulations to our colleagues for their accomplishments! We look forward to their continued contributions to the Department and the Academy!
Thanks for your many years of service and producing the best ChemEs for our Nation! We’ll miss you!
Congrats 2022 ChemE’s!
Alexa!
Hope!
Congratulations to our newest University of Southampton scholar, CDT Clara Bartram!
The Southampton-West Point Scholarship was established in 2019 to deepen US-UK cooperation and facilitate the development of high-performing, thoughtful, and culturally competent leaders for the Army.
“The Southampton Scholarship is a really unique experience for me to pursue partnerships with British counterparts in academia through my studies in chemical engineering and sustainable energy and in the military through the University Officer Training Corps located at Southampton.” -CDT Bartram
Born and raised in Kensington, Maryland, Clara Bartram is a Chemical Engineering major with research experience in propellant chemistry, flow batteries, and writing pedagogy. Clara has engaged in the dual pursuit of engineering and writing because she believes that engineers and scientists must be equipped with the communication abilities to enable the public to understand the merits of technological advances. At Southampton University, Clara will study toward a Master of Science in Chemical Engineering with a research focus in sustainable energy storage solutions and flow battery technologies.

Congratulations to Cadets Ryan Kreiser (‘22, Chemistry), Alexa Zammit (’22, Chemical Engineering), and Felita Zhang (’22, Life Science) for receiving the National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship! The NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program, established in 1952, is the country’s oldest fellowship program supporting the nation’s top students in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math. The success of these cadets is a testament to their dedication and diligence in the classroom as well as the laboratory, in addition to the hard work and mentorship of their advisors, faculty, and staff in the department.
The NSF Fellowship provides the awardees with a three-year annual stipend along with a cost of education allowance for tuition and fees in pursuit of a research-based graduate degree in NSF-supported STEM disciplines. Currently, 42 Fellows have gone on to become Nobel laureates, and more than 450 have become members of the National Academy of Sciences. https://bit.ly/AboutGRFP
Great job MAJ Yi, well deserved! ChemEs lead the way!
Great job ChemE’s! Not a single Navy sighting, beat ‘em!
ChemE cadets and faculty continue to broadcast the amazing work leading seminar talks updating the AIChE professional community on updates on current research in the Department! Again amazing work team!
Congratulations to all ChemEs participating in the poster competition. CDT Evan Lee earned 1st place in the Materials Engineering and Sciences category and CDT Duncan Day who placed 3rd in the Fuels, Petrochemicals, and Energy category!
ChemEs are currently representing the USMA program at the AIChE Annual Conference in Boston, MA! Take a look at them in action during the student research poster competition.
Congratulations COL James! 🍾🎉🥳
Congrats to LT Milanesa for her continued success and recent Ranger qualification! You rock!
Congratulations to LTC Corey James, Dr. Robert Jane (CCDC-ARL) and their research team [2LT Tae Young Kim (Chem Eng ‘21), CDT Emily Glass (Chem ‘24), and CDT Emilee Mossman (Chem Eng ‘24)] on their most recent publication in the journal Energies! The article titled “Tailoring Mission Effectiveness and Efficiency of a Ground Vehicle Using Exergy-Based Model Predictive Control (MPC)” features their work designing a methodology to model, optimize, and control energy/exergy for improved efficiency and effectiveness of ground combat vehicles on the battlefield. Their work will be instrumental in providing predictive analysis to increase efficiency and reduce waste throughout the force. The article can be found at https://doi.org/10.3390/en14196049.
Great job Dr. Biaglow! ChemE’s rule the school!
