🔥Attention everyone! It's time to talk about sparkler safety. 💥
Every year, we see young children with sparklers in hand during parades and festivals. But did you know that sparklers are much more dangerous than they appear? It's crucial to be aware of the risks.
Sparklers burn at a staggering 2,000 degrees, which is hot enough to melt certain metals. Imagine the danger it poses! These seemingly innocent items can quickly ignite clothing, causing severe burns. In fact, the National Fire Protection Association reports that sparklers alone account for more than 25% of emergency room visits for fireworks injuries. Shockingly, for children under 5 years old, sparklers account for nearly half of all estimated injuries.
Let's prioritize safety and consider using alternative options that are just as fun but far safer. 🎉 Swap out those sparklers for glow sticks, confetti poppers, or colored streamers. These alternatives can still bring joy and excitement to your celebrations while eliminating the risk of burns and injuries.
Remember, safety should always be the top priority. Let's protect our loved ones and make this a memorable and safe occasion for everyone.
Fireworks Protocol: Leave fireworks to the pros. Enjoy public displays from a safe distance.

Today, our hearts and thoughts are with our brothers and sisters at DU-COMM as they cope with the loss of one of their own.
In our line of work the reality is we deal with death on a daily basis. Today that became all too real for us as DU-COMM lost one of their own. “Moni” was a valued member of the DU-COMM family for over 23 years and will be greatly missed. We are keeping her family and friends in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

ARE YOU READY FOR THE APRIL 8 TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE? 🌞🌚
The Westmont Fire Department is thrilled to announce the arrival of our latest emergency response tool. In a groundbreaking decision set to revolutionize firefighting worldwide, we are trading in our traditional fire hoses for state-of-the-art super soakers for each of our firefighters! Say hello to the "Splash and Dash" firefighting method (patent pending) - where we'll be tackling blazes with flair and plenty of water!
Rest assured, safety remains our top priority. These super soakers have undergone rigorous testing to ensure their efficacy. We even organized water warfare training sessions for our team (strictly for research purposes) to perfect this innovative firefighting approach. However, fret not, during real emergencies, our focus will be solely on extinguishing flames, not engaging in water fights amongst ourselves!
So, if you see our firefighters equipped with the super soakers pictured below, just know it’s all in the spirit of…
April Fools’ Day!
Westmont Fire Department recently held a Fire Apparatus Engineers (FAE) class. Firefighters from Westmont Fire Department, Tri-State Fire District, Argonne National Laboratory Fire Department, Clarendon Hills Fire Department, Oak Brook Fire Department, Brookfield Fire Department participated in the training
The Fire Apparatus Engineer course is designed to train firefighters who operate fire department vehicles. It aims to teach firefighters about water principles, pump mechanics, pump controls, hydraulic systems, aerial apparatus operations, proper positioning of vehicles, creating effective fire streams, maintaining pumps, testing pumps, and troubleshooting pump issues.
Upon completion of the course, firefighters are skilled in generating efficient fire streams from various water sources such as hydrants and drafting from static sources. They are proficient in handling different hose scenarios, ranging from simple to complex relay operations, enabling them to grasp fire ground hydraulics and apply practical solutions in their department.

Better informed 9-1-1 responders are better equipped to help citizens in emergency situations. With the Premise Alert Program and the SMART 911 Program, first responders are aware of critical information that might make the difference in saving lives. These two programs allow citizens to provide important information to Police, Fire, and EMS personnel so that they can more effectively respond to emergency situations involving citizens with these needs.
