The AES Students held their final meeting of the year. They had two special guests share their knowledge and invite students to participate in major audio projects. Students learned about internship opportunities and other job opportunities. Aguirre Audio sponsored today's meeting. It was a very refreshing experience to see the large number of students and professionals that came together at this meeting. Afterwards, a group of students wrote a MIDI track in .protools and played it through the Yamaha Disklavier. It was amazing to see and hear the track come to life! Students recorded this piece with a matched stereo pair of Neumann U87ai microphones. Our students are pushing the boundaries of audio tech!
Our recording studios saw full capacity this week, with students diligently working on projects for their classes, practicums, and personal pursuits. The photos capture the transformation of a classroom into a music recording space and the conversion of our podcast studio into a Foley stage. These pictures, taken within a minute of each other, showcase the dedicated efforts of our students. Their projects are also sounding great!
Students explored new sonic textures in Professor Thomas Hays' MART 107 Intro to the Recording Studio class. Equipped with a diverse range of tools, from lap steel guitars to vocoders, Professor Hays encouraged students to experiment with a vast array of sonic possibilities, both through the instruments themselves and the studio's recording equipment.
Audio Production students Mackenzie K. (lead engineer) and Lucas G. (assistant engineer) welcomed School of Performing Arts Director Clawson Chandler for a voiceover session for a very meaningful dance work. This week, Wichita State University School of Performing Arts presents their Wichita Contemporary Dance Theatre Spring Concert. This kind of collaboration makes our community special.
MART 251 Modern Studio Production students are collaborating on a track, bringing their talents together. This week, keys and electric guitar took center stage! Even Professor Wallace from Red Cat Recording is in the mix, sharing his audio production expertise.
Happy Music Tech Monday! Our MART110 students are dropping beats and crafting melodies on samplers, sequencers, and beat machines. Can you hear the next hit being born?
Also, don't miss the final AES meeting of the year. Audio Production alumni and the local audio community are especially welcome! (scroll for details)
Shocker Studios had some special guests join us this morning! The Tanganyika Wildlife Park staff came in to talk to our students about some exciting opportunities. Not only that but they brought in the sweetest penguin, Nugget!
It’s not everyday that you see a penguin at Shocker Studios 🐧
Today, our studio was filled with beautiful music as we hosted the Wichita Collegiate School Madrigals for a recording session. The Madrigals' talent shone through, and our students even recorded them on our new baby grand piano.
The player piano made its debut earlier this week when the Jazz Recording students used it to implement a variety of microphone techniques. With a player piano, we get the same exact performance every time, allowing students to truly compare their mic placement and technique!

Our brand new Disklavier player piano has arrived! This opens up a world of possibilities for our students.
Students can conduct controlled microphone shootouts, evaluating microphone placement, selection, and overall recording technique in a consistent, controlled, and repeatable way.
Students can track directly to MIDI from the piano, allowing them to capture their performances digitally. The Disklavier can even play them back their other MIDI files acoustically – bringing their digital creations to life!
With an upcoming module upgrade, we'll even be able to facilitate remote piano sessions, expanding our learning opportunities even further.
Not to mention the unmatched elegance!
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who helped make this acquisition possible, including the original owners, the dedicated staff at School of Digital Arts (), , P***n Music Wichita, , and all others who contributed.
