Why would Marie Antoinette and a magician be spotted on the Newman University campus, you ask? For the National Reacting Game Development Conference, of course! ๐ญ
Reacting to the Past consists of active learning role-playing games designed for higher education. Using the roles and historical context they are given, participants must make decisions, problem-solve, collaborate and debate on important issues.
โWeโre not acting and weโre not reading from a script, so remembering what that experience is like is essential to using the games in the classroom so that I can identify better with my students,โ said Michaele Ferguson, Ph.D., (aka "Antoinette") associate professor of political science at the University of Colorado in Boulder in Colorado.

Growing up, one of the things Newman University graduate Melody Mertes โ24 remembers most was hearing her parents say how valuable a college education was.
Mertesโ father earned his GI Bill from 24 years of military service and passed the college education benefit to Mertes and her two brothers.
โI loved knowing that I would get to go off to this magical, wonderful place called college, earn a degree and be exactly like my mom,โ Mertes said.
However, in filling out her own FAFSA application, Mertes discovered an interesting fact about her momโs education path.
Because her mom worked as a project manager for National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and later a senior project manager for the Federal Reserve Bank, Mertes had assumed her mother earned these jobs because of a college education.
โWhen I went to fill out the FAFSA my junior or senior year of high school, I made the discovery that my mom had indeed never graduated from college, and instead she earned her masterโs certificate in project management and worked her way up the corporate ladder,โ Mertes said. โI was even more amazed.โ
