Congratulations to one of MPR’s board members, Dr. Gretchen Irwin!

Gretchen Irwin, M.D., MBA, has been appointed chair of the Department of Family & Community Medicine. Dr. Irwin has served in multiple leadership roles, including clerkship director and residency program director. She currently serves as the associate dean for graduate medical education and the designated institutional official for the Wichita Center for Graduate Medical Education. In each role she has assumed since joining the KU School of Medicine-Wichita faculty in 2010, Dr. Irwin’s performance has been exceptional. Once a successor has been recruited, she will step down from her associate dean and DIO roles.

🚨 Understanding Emergency vs. Disaster Privileges 🚨

In the medical field, knowing the difference between emergency and disaster privileges is crucial.

Here’s a quick breakdown:

•Emergency Privileges: Granted to current staff for life-saving measures beyond their usual scope, but only until a qualified practitioner steps in.

•Disaster Privileges: For external practitioners during community disasters, activated by the hospital’s Emergency Operations Plan for swift credentialing.

Remember, emergency privileges are temporary, while disaster privileges require strict verification within 72 hours to ensure patient safety during crises. Stay informed and prepared!

Efforts to allow an ever-growing list of provider types to practice in another state are gaining momentum. This model will create challenges to credentialing these providers at the hospitals, ambulatory surgery center and other facilities. While this provides a convenient and voluntary expedited pathway, it will require medical staff professionals to monitor the various Compact requirements to stay current on the regulatory requirements and changes.
