Doc for a Day 2023 12/19/2023

Family Medicine Interest Group hosts 22nd Annual Doc for a Day
Seventy-four high school students from 27 high schools participated in the 22nd annual Family Medicine Interest Group “Doc for a Day” workshop on Nov. 4. The event began with a presentation by Michelle Ponce from admissions and a question-and-answer session. The high school students rotated through hands-on stations where they practiced CPR, obstetrical deliveries, suturing techniques, and participated in code blue simulations. The medical student volunteers demonstrated how to take vital signs, conduct a patient interview, and perform a basic physical exam. Faculty member, Tessa Rohrberg, M.D., said of the event: “It is so encouraging to see the excitement from the high school students who attend Doc-for-a-Day. For some of them, this is their first exposure to a possible career in healthcare. I am inspired by our medical student leaders who continue to plan, create, and host this event year after year! They are already planning for how to reach more high school communities!” Faculty and staff from the simulation center, including Greg Cooper; Josh Davis, M.D.; Erin Doyle, BSN, RN, CHSE; Mary Koehn, Ph.D., APRN, CHSE; Jeanne Raitt; Garry Tolle, MICT; Angie Deckert; Sherry Schmidt; and Patty Truly, RN, assisted with the stations. FMIG Doc for a Day co-chairs Morgan Hamersky, MS3, and Jason Gilchrist, MS3, organized the 36 medical students who volunteered for the event.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW:
David Graham, M.D., graduated from KU School of Medicine in 1974 and completed his training
at Wesley in 1977. Between 1977-1981, Dr. Graham was associate residency director at USAF
Regional Hospital, Carswell Air Force Base, Fort Worth, Texas. In 1981, Dr. Graham returned to
Kansas, practicing in Olathe and Overland Park until 2018. Dr. Graham was a volunteer physician at
the Johnson County Health Partnership for 25 years and has participated in annual medical mission work sponsored by Grace United Methodist Church, Olathe in the village of Tochimizolco, Mexico, for over 25 years. He was a board member for the Olathe Medical Center for 12 years and on the Olathe Health System board of directors for 16 years. Dr. Graham currently serves as chair of the Kansas Health Institute board of directors. The Kansas Health Institute supports effective policymaking through nonpartisan research, education and engagement. It utilizes evidence-based information, objective analysis and civil dialogue to enable policy leaders to be champions for a healthier Kansas.
“The residency program at Wesley was quite rigorous and prepared me well for my initial position training residents in family medicine at Carswell USAF Regional Hospital, as well as preparing me for my decades of practice in Olathe and Overland Park,” Graham said. “When I was in residency, the founder of the Wesley Family Medicine Residency Program, Gayle Stephens, M.D., came to speak to us on the importance of the doctor-patient relationship. He reminded us that when the doctor is having a busy day, for the doctor it’s just another patient, but for the patient, that encounter is an event in their life. Patients rehearse what to say and prepare for their visit. His words have stuck with me over the years and guided my practice. This experience greatly affected my interaction with my patients. I attempted to always keep this perspective in mind and to respect the opportunity that a doctor’s visit is for each patient.”
“I thank Dr. Stephens and my program directors, Stan Mosier, M.D., and Vic Vorhees, M.D., for their mentorship and guidance and for always promoting the doctor-patient relationship. I believe my residency experience was responsible for my being acknowledged on NPR’s “Morning Edition” in 2009 for having ranked first out of 674 physicians in the greater Kansas City area in a patient satisfaction survey. I have always been a firm believer in the importance of family medicine in providing and promoting health care and commend the residents in training for choosing this essential specialty. I remain convinced that our specialty will become increasingly valued in the future.”

You can view a recording of Dr. Watson’s presentation at bit.ly/KUWFCMAntarctica

(CONTD)
The winter-over season lasts from mid-February to October. In that timeframe, the weather conditions and the near-constant darkness make it dangerous to bring anyone or anything in or out of the station. As
Dr. Watson explained, many of the medical complaints of the crew come from living in conditions that are too cold, too dry, too high, or too dark. One of the most common conditions is sleep disturbance. Dr. Watson focuses on preventive health with his patients who are a young and healthy population. With a crew of only 44, if someone is unable to do their job due to illness, there is no one else to take their place.
Any rural Kansas physician would be familiar with the setup at the South Pole Medical Center, which consists of a trauma bay with two inpatient beds, an exam room, dental chair, lab and pharmacy. The South Pole Medical Center is also equipped with an extensive telemedicine service through the University of Texas Medical Branch that Dr. Watson can use to get near-immediate medical consultation – if a satellite is in view. As the sole physician on crew, Dr. Watson also spends his time training and running emergency care drills with the 11 crew members on the medical trauma team who previously had little to no medical background. He has trained the team in basic trauma care skills, rapid sequence intubation, ultrasound-guided IV insertion, and performance of EKG and lab tests. His expectation is for team members to perform at the level of a fourth-year medical student.
During the question-and-answer session, Dr. Watson was asked, “what part of being a rural family physician trained you for being at the South Pole?” Dr. Watson answered, “I don’t think you can overstate the value of what we have in Kansas. In residency, the opportunity still exists if you want to be a generalist who is really good at your job and have training across an incredible spectrum of skills including OB, emergency room and critical care. In rural practice, it’s not uncommon to be the primary surgeon on a C-section and then later in the same hour to be intubating someone and responding to traumas. That’s something special that is difficult to describe to those on the outside, but when you get a different perspective, you realize just how lucky we are to have had it.”

LIVE FROM ANTARCTICA:
John-Michael Watson, M.D., 2013 KUSM-W graduate and 2016 KUSM-W Family Medicine Residency Program at Wesley Medical Center graduate, presented virtually to KUSM-Wichita students, faculty, residents and community preceptors on June 16 by satellite link. Dr. Watson is the 2022 winter-over physician at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, serving the medical needs of the 44 crew members. The presentation included an overview of the history of the United States Antarctic Program, the current science that is being conducted at the research station, and the practice of medicine and daily life at the South Pole. After the oral presentation, Dr. Watson live-streamed a tour of the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station and conducted a question-and-answer session.
