Last week, I had the amazing opportunity to share with the ladies of RidgePoint here in Wichita. We ate great food, had delicious coffee, and had a great time in the Lord’s presence! So thankful for what I get to do.

“The apostles left the high council rejoicing that God had counted them worthy to suffer disgrace for the name of Jesus.”

This verse really made me pause this morning.

When it says the apostles REJOICED in being worthy to SUFFER, I had to take a moment.

The context of this passage is the religious leaders still haven’t figured out about Jesus. He performed all these miracles, DIED AND ROSE, and their hard hearts and arrogance continued to make them miss it.

Church, I pray we never think we have it so figured out that we miss what Jesus wants to do. I pray we never live on the altar of being our own god through knowledge or pride or whatever it may be.

So, these prideful people want the apostles to stop talking about Jesus. The apostles beautifully reply that they MUST honor God over any man.

Then, after Gamaliel (Paul’s teacher) persuades the high council to leave them be, they find JOY in being disgraced for Jesus’ name.

Now, in Jewish culture, being disgraced is not something trivial; it is a big deal. And these individuals were so moved by what Jesus had done for them that they just didn’t care. They knew He alone was the answer - Jesus is Messiah. What a powerful truth.

Preaching true Jesus, not a watered down version of the Gospel but complete surrender to His Lordship, is not something some, even supposed church leaders, want to hear. We care so much about appearance and not pushing others away that we forget this is about the honor of promoting HIS name. We can be kind, but we should never compromise.

Whether it’s talking about cultural hot topics or just being moved by whatever in our lives is keeping us from the fullness Jesus has, I pray that we would take delight in suffering for His name. I pray, whatever smearing of my name, would bring me delight because it’s done only in service of King Jesus. Promoting Gospel truth isn’t popular. But, if the world didn’t like Jesus, it’s okay if they don’t like me.

I caution all of us in service to the King - if we look more like the world than Him, we need an examination. Though persecution isn’t fun, and I believe the western Church is about to experience more, what an HONOR to suffer for the glory of the name of Jesus. Let’s not look to any man but to the Lordship alone of Jesus Christ.
