NEW Parasite Found in N.C. Scallops! A team of UNCW researchers has identified a species of trematode parasite infecting native bay scallops in NC. β€œIt’s visible when you open a scallop that’s infected. You can see it,” said Dr. Julia Buck, an assistant professor in UNCW Biology & Marine Biology Department who has been working with Dr. Ami Wilbur to identify the specifics of the parasite since she came to the university in 2019. https://bit.ly/BuckParasite
The team's findings are published in the journal "Aquaculture."

It's Coral Reef Awareness Week! These images are shared from our Reproduction and Evolutionary Ecology-Fogarty Lab and are some of the endangered coral species in the lab. Internationally, coral reefs are facing several threats: disease, rising ocean temperatures, ocean acidification, pollution, predation and more. Our lab is one of many partnering organizations working to better understand these threats and develop innovative methods to best counteract them.

PSA: CMS with our partner North Carolina Sea Grant provides guidance on breaking the "Grip of the Rip!" Know your options! 80% of all surf rescues are related to rip currents.
Options:
1) Relax, rip currents will not pull you under
2) Don't fight the current
3) Escape by swimming parallel to shore (sideways)
4) Float or tread water, the grip will release you
5) Pay attention to RED flags that warn of Rip Currents

Congrats to Dr. Lori Sutter, UNCW Biology & Marine Biology Department, and colleagues on the recent publication of a study that examines phosphorus distribution in forest development from 1957 to 2017 at the Calhoun Critical Zone Observatory in South Carolina. The paper shows that long-term soil experiments inform our understanding of the role of slowly cycling P fractions in maintaining the balance between available soil P and forest demand, and more!
