🌟 Leadership Winston-Salem Legacy Spotlight! 🌟
Today, we would like to shine our light on the Driscoll family, a remarkable example of commitment and legacy within Leadership Winston-Salem (LWS). Their connection spans three generations, each contributing significantly to our programs and community.
Frank E. Driscoll, a Flagship Graduate of 1989, was a dedicated philanthropic supporter of LWS who passed away in 2021. Frank’s life was a testament to his belief in good stewardship, as reflected in his obituary: "My glory and satisfaction is proclaimed... I pray that those who remain will conduct themselves so as to achieve a like fulfillment."
Continuing this legacy is his son, Dale “Dek” Driscoll, a Flagship Graduate of 2001. Dek was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the NC-Triad Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals in 2022. He has been a steadfast supporter of Senior Services, Centenary United Methodist Church, and Leadership Winston-Salem, serving on the LWS Board of Directors from 2016 to 2021.
The next generation, Mimi Driscoll Bennett, continues the family tradition as a Flagship Graduate of 2019. Currently, Mimi serves on our Board of Directors as the Resource Development Chair. We eagerly anticipate the contributions of the fourth generation in the Driscoll family.
The Driscoll family’s enduring involvement and support embody the spirit of Leadership Winston-Salem, and we are grateful for their profound impact.

Margaret (Tog) Newman, LWS Class of 1985, Executive Director, 1986-1991, has had a distinguished career in cultural, civic, and community leadership across Winston-Salem, the state, and beyond. She served as the first executive director of Leadership Winston-Salem. She was involved with the Piedmont Triad Leadership Network, Common Vision, and Rotary, where she was among the first women members. She held leadership roles in various arts organizations, including serving as president and chairing the North Carolina Arts Council and the North Carolina Center for Non-Profits.
Her extensive experience in non-profits contributed significantly to expanding community involvement. Notably, she has received many awards, including the North Carolina Award, which recognized her as a visionary leader, advocate for fairness, and passionate administrator.
Freida Mitchell, Alumni Engagement Director, had a chance to sit down with Tog recently and asked about her experience as a part of the first class in 1985 and as the first Executive Director of Leadership Winston-Salem. She stated, "Leadership Winston-Salem was established to tackle serious issues and provide a space where everyone—regardless of race, economic status, or business sector—could come together and speak freely." Serving as Executive Director for six years, she had the privilege of being a part of implementing the Leadership Connection program, which sought to educate and engage newcomers and emerging leaders in the community.
When asked how she felt regarding the progress of Leadership Winston-Salem during her time as ED and today, she said, "...we achieved what we set out to do."
In recent years, she played a vital role in the faith and justice group at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, spearheading initiatives such as the "Not in My Back Yard" luncheon series and the Trinity Institute's local conference on race. Tog holds a B.A. in political science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and was married for 61 years to her late husband, Michael.
Join us in congratulating Greater Winston-Salem Inc for their recognition as a 2024 Chamber of the Year by the Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives (ACCE).
Join Leadership Winston-Salem for our upcoming Community Coffee "Business Before Hours" event.
