Home Fire Sprinkler Week - Thursday Tips
Facts from the NFPA Fire Sprinkler Initiative
Only the sprinkler closest to the fire—not all sprinklers—will activate.
Newer homes are not safer homes. Today’s new homes are crafted with “lightweight” materials that allow fire to spread faster and cause structural failure sooner. Furthermore, newer homes often contain modern furnishings made of mainly synthetic materials that can create a greater fuel load.
Home Fire Sprinkler Week - Wednesday Tip from NFPA Fire Sprinkler Initiative
Home fire sprinklers can reduce the risk of dying in a fire by 80 percent and can reduce property loss by 70 percent.
For more information on home fire sprinklers, visit NFPA’s Fire Sprinkler Initiative site, www.FireSprinklerInitiative.org.

Article excerpt:
Why is viscosity a critical measurement to ensure foam performance?
If you’ve received a firefighting foam test report from Dyne, you will often notice that we have tested the viscosity of the foam concentrate. This is an important property to ensure performance.
Manufacturers add polymers to foam concentrates to improve performance. Historically with AFFF and FFFP formulations, polymers were added to enable the concentrate to extinguish polar solvents such as acetone, isopropanol and ethanol. Standard AFFF, for use strictly on hydrocarbons, do not have a significant viscosity and have flow characteristics like water. With the new SFFF (Synthetic Fluorine-Free Foam) concentrates, polymers are added to most of the formulations – including products for use on hydrocarbons only - to improve performance by lengthening the drain time. These polymers increase the viscosity of the foam concentrates.

• Announcement: NEW@ 3M™ Novec™ 1230 Testing
• Webinar: Free Foam Webinar on May 15
News excerpt:
Dyne Fire Protection Labs is excited to announce the growth of their laboratory services to include the analysis of 3M Novec 1230.
Novec 1230 is a halogenated clean agent for applications where water-based fire suppression could damage sensitive equipment/property. A clean agent, sometimes referred to as waterless fire extinguishing agent, is formally defined by NFPA 2001 as a “volatile or gaseous fire extinguishant that is electrically nonconducting and that does not leave a residue upon evaporation”.
The current, 2022 edition of NFPA 2001, the Standard on Clean Agent Fire Extinguishing Systems, states each batch of recycled agent shall be tested and certified to the quality specifications outlined in the standard. According to Grant Lobdell, the President at Dyne Fire Protection Labs, “As 3M exits this market, Dyne will be here to help recyclers ensure existing Novec 1230 continues to meet NFPA 2001 requirements.”

Dyne Fire Protection Labs is excited to announce the growth of our laboratory services to include FK 5-1-12 analysis.
The current, 2022 edition of NFPA 2001, the Standard on Clean Agent Fire Extinguishing Systems, states that “each batch of agent, both recycled and newly manufactured, shall be tested and certified to the specifications [of this standard]”.
FK 5-1-12 is a halogenated clean agent for applications where water-based fire suppression could damage sensitive equipment/property. A clean agent, sometimes referred to as waterless fire extinguishing agent, is formally defined by NFPA 2001 as a “volatile or gaseous fire extinguishant that is electrically nonconducting and that does not leave a residue upon evaporation”. FK 5-1-12 is a replacement for halon and hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) which had significant ozone depletion potential (ODP) and/or global warming potential (GWP).
