YELA kicked off yesterday - the first of 2024. It was marvelous.

Students met Shelly Schafer from the City of Woodbury & the Woodbury Heritage Society's team for a Oral History Walking tour of the Valley Creek Heritage Trail, home of the Miller Barn.

Our thanks to both the City of Woodbury & the Woodbury Heritage Society for a GREAT day, as they met the heat & sun yesterday.
But, it was wonderful to be outside - walking & talking.

A Giverā€™s Heart
Seeing everyone happy makes us happier! Woodbury Champions gathered on Wednesday evening to help pack snack packs for our youth experiencing food insecurity & hygiene kits for men & women in partnership with Basic Needs of Washington County.

We met at the beautiful Sweet Magnolias Event Center on Radio Drive, thanks to delightful owner, Tara Carlson.

ED of Basic Needs, Opey Penaloga, was very thankful to the WCF for these gifts who raised funds to provide the products, & for the gifts of time from the network of volunteers ā€“ Woodbury Champions.
Basic Needs provide free access to food to those in need from Woodbury to Hastings. ā€˜We created an environment thatā€™s barrier freeā€™, explained Mr. Penaloga. To learn more: https://www.basicneedsmn.org/

We are continually touched by our community ā€“ itā€™s unlimited & unconditional love & generosity ā€“ itā€™s desire to show up & help pack, to chat with one another to lift one another up & to learn more about how we can help others.

Thank you all very much.

Wisdom to Live Beautifully
We all experience days when we wish we were wiser. How do I handle complex things at work? My daughter keeps misbehaving? The loss of a loved one. So, we read books, consult others, take classes hoping to gain some helpful advice on how to manage our lives.
What is beautiful is that we do have great people & groups to lean on. Matt Johnson, Chair of the WCF, knows how lucky he is ā€“ he leans on his ā€˜tribeā€™ sincerely, passionately & thankfully ā€“ he has the wisdom to live beautifully with YOU.

We were at a lovely event last night at Sweet Magnolias, Woodbury ā€“ packing goods/necessities for Basic Needs ā€“ much more on this soon.

06/25/2024

Join us this week on Wednesday, June 26 from 4-6pm at Sweet Magnolia Event Center in Woodbury for our Woodbury Champions June Service project. We will be packing hygiene, snack and meal kits for local families in partnership with Basic Needs MN. The WoodburyChampions are the Foundationā€™score of volunteers who help join up to make Woodbury better!

Photos from Woodbury Community Foundation's post 06/21/2024

Dick Hanson went to his eternal home today, 2 years ago, 21st June, 2022.
Dick was the reason many of us became part of the Woodbury Community Foundation. Somehow Dick had such faith in all of us -he was always ā€˜seeing by faithā€™. Faith & confidence that our community as a whole were doing the right thing.

One of our Board Directors wrote this short essay after his passing two years ago ā€“ about Dickā€™s vitality, joy & how he got good at dying.
A tribute to our ole skipper on his anniversary todayā€¦

4 thousand weeks is the very approximate length of a life. When I consider my allotment of time on this Earth, it makes me sort of reconfigure the definition of what it is to live a life with vitality in a finite time. I need redirection on whatā€™s important to endeavor at least a few good things that matter -- careful not to do good simply with an egocentric/self-congratulatory lens.
The modern world teaches us to pretend to be immortal, live for today as technology has a better tomorrow. What is of utmost importance requires great effort -furthering our mind & spirit gets put on the long finger quite often as we get nudged into busy work, social media & cable news.

Realizing that time & vitality is limited, what if we think about how to get good at dying? If our mission were to come closer to some more transcendent vision; we donā€™t need to fear death - one of our biggest control issues. As we observeā€¦ everything dies, but that makes for a very rich world ā€“ as all things known to us live in cycles which often points toward growth. We cannot see existence without time, beginnings, endingsā€¦

Dick Hanson was the unofficial patriarch in Woodbury. He got good at dying, he got to a place where he was at peace when his time came. Dick peacefully accepted his death with the same fearlessness that he lived life.

All his life he chose JOY. He was a powerhouse in the story of his own life with his circle of family & friends. Dick will always be remembered for his fearless independence, his unconventional intelligence & his aura of gentleness. He was a fountain of knowledge & at the heart of it all, a truly humble soul.

His experience lent him much wisdom, which many were enlightened with. He would want you to consider the possibility that many of the things you are already doing are more meaningful than you assumed.

He practiced things on purpose, lived a full meaningful life & fought to the end trying to perfect selfless love. He helped those journeying through dark labyrinthine corridors of their lives by giving hope & was a flame that shone through, like a watch tower dancing through murky fog. His default was joy & vitality -until vitality ran out.

Learning from Dick, I am a bit more at peace with things. Like Dick, I no longer believe, deep down, that Iā€™m going to simply get to the point where Iā€™ve reached the summit of great things where I can just keep walking along the plateau with little effort. Life will always be full of challenges & goals.

Old age need not be drifting off in sedated comfort; but to choose JOY & to always enter into the fray with wonder & vitality; until it runs out & we move outside of this time.

What we decide & whether we make the right decisions & spend our lives in the right wayā€¦ really, really, really matters.

Doing a few good things on oneā€™s voyage, in order to make things slightly better for those you encounter on the open ocean was the sextant Skipper Hanson always used until he sailed to his sheltered port across these unsettled waters.

Only 1% of Americans are serving in the US military. We honor the few.
We honor the meaning of Memorial Day today, & take time to reflect & remember all who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service of our country.

But service doesnā€™t just have to be in the military, we can advocate to getting us back to national service as a country.

It could be with our local school or church, a national park, inner-city tutoring, elderly care as well as volunteering for your favorite non-profit.
But how do we get young people out in an environment where theyā€™re learning leadership, discipline, fellowship, serving a cause bigger than themselves?
You can check out YELA which will introduce our local youth to different non-profits & help them think about the latter. https://www.woodburyfoundation.org/youth-engagement-leadership-academy/

We need to support & honor our veterans. Thank a veteran, meet those from all services, all generations, & help our youth do something with their hands, heads & hearts that improve the world around us--- that Honors our Veterans.

Philanthropy leaders can identify practices we all take for granted; and, the beauty of brainstorming with our Youth Directors, thanks to their lens on issues, makes us better-faster, smarter, easier, more impactful.
Four Youth Directors serve on the Foundation Board -

Hi! Iā€™m a junior at East Ridge High School and I live here in Woodbury. A huge part of my life is swimming! Iā€™ve been a competitive swimmer for 10 years now and I swim for my high school team, as well as club.
I love to read, travel, try new restaurants, and spend time with family and friends.
I joined the foundation in hopes to help make a difference and get involved in my community. I feel that youth voices are equally as important for a healthy community and it is important to get all perspectives.
After high school, I plan to attend a 4-year university and major in political science, potentially following the pre-law track.
