Community Health Intervention Programmes (CHIPs)

On July 20th, the Sports Science Institute took a significant step towards ensuring the long-term success of the Community Health Improvement Program (CHIP) by training twelve community leaders from various OptiFit branches. The comprehensive training program equipped these leaders with the practical skills and knowledge necessary to take on a more responsible role in leading weekly exercise sessions at their respective branches.

The training curriculum covered essential topics such as health screening protocols, managing members with lifestyle ailments, and designing effective exercise programs. Participants also gained hands-on experience with various equipment, including dumbbells, rocket bags, pezzie balls, ladders, and hurdles under the guidance of Biokineticist Mr. Jarrod Grunewald

The training sessions provided a valuable opportunity for the leaders to gain a deeper understanding of their new responsibilities and develop the skills needed to better serve their communities. This initiative is a testament to the dedication and willingness of community members to step up into leadership roles.

As CHIP marks its 27th anniversary, it is clear that empowering these leaders is crucial for ensuring the sustainability of the program and its impact on the communities they serve. By equipping community leaders with the necessary skills and knowledge, CHIP is paving the way for a brighter future where communities can thrive through physical activity and wellness initiatives. In celebration of Mandela Day, the Sports Science Institute of South Africa conducted health screening tests for the dedicated teachers at Kenmere Primary School on July 18th. The initiative, part of the National 67 Minutes for Mandela Day campaign, aimed to promote health and wellness among the school's educators.

The morning session saw 25 teachers undergo comprehensive health screenings, with the school's Principal, Mr. Page, and Vice Principal, Mrs. Woudberg, also participating in the event. The screenings provided an opportunity for the teachers to take control of their health and receive valuable insights into their physical well-being.

The Sports Science Institute is grateful to Kenmere Primary School for welcoming us to their school and allowing us to create new memories in honor of Nelson Mandela's legacy. The event not only promoted health awareness but also served as a testament to the importance of giving back to the community.

Through this initiative, we hope to inspire a culture of wellness and self-care among educators, enabling them to lead by example and prioritize their own health as they nurture and inspire their students. On July 6th, Sports Science trained five community leaders from various OptiFit branches to equip them with the skills and knowledge necessary to take on a more responsible role in leading weekly exercise sessions at their respective branches. On Saturday the 22nd of June the CHIP`s Community Outreach organised the OptiFit Winter Bootcamp at the SAB Oval in Newlands. CHIPs organized HealthNutz training for new coaches recruited from Chrysalis Academy on March 12th and 13th. The training focused on equipping the new coaches with an understanding of how children in the foundation phase develop and how to use fun activities and games that could help children enhance fine motor and gross motor skills. We are excited for the new coaches to apply the HealthNutz model once they graduate on April 6th. Sports Science held their OptiFit Leaders testing on Saturday, February 3rd, where they conducted the yearly leaders' assessments. This assessment aimed to ensure their preparedness in overseeing the weekly OptiFit classes within their own communities. The event was not only enjoyable but also provided a platform for deep and meaningful discussions focusing on mental well-being and individual fitness ambitions. This celebration also coincided with breast cancer awareness month and members were challenged to show their solidarity to the cause by wearing pink on those nights. Yesterday, on the 21st of September, our OptiFit Delft Branch had an incredible morning in Greenpoint! They embarked on their very own Totalsports fun walk, starting at the Cape Town Stadium and making their way all the way to the Greenpoint Lighthouse.

Come rain or shine, our Delft Branch was determined to make the most of this experience, and boy, did they succeed! Their determination paid off when they unexpectedly ran into the Springbok female rugby team, who happened to be planning a training session in the area.

When perseverance and chance collide, magical moments are created, and we have the pictures to prove it! These images capture the beautiful memories made during this unforgettable encounter.

On Saturday, September 2nd, our Grassy Park Branch showed that love is a verb when they dropped off knitted beanies and blankets for children at the Mowbray Maternity Hospital. The beanies and blankets were knitted by OptiFit members and we are super proud of the branch for this beautiful gesture. On the 24th of August, the CHIP`s team facilitated a fitness session in Killarney, for a church that is interested in starting an OptiFit group for the community. 25 people attended the session and a lot of fun was had by all in attendance. We will journey with this group over the next few months facilitating sessions on a Thursday evening until we have identified suitable leaders to train and hopefully by the end of the year we can add them to the OptiFit family. Recently Sports Science collaborated with the Stanford Neighbourhood Watch by assisting them with their wellness day for 25 senior citizens from the surrounding areas. Veronica Plaatjies and two of our OptiFit members Ms. Esther Ehrenreicht and Ms. Arline Stevens assisted with health screening and seated exercises incorporating resistance bands as part of the routine. This was a beautiful initiative for Community Health Intervention Programmes (CHIPs) to be part of and we are grateful to the Standford CPF and NHW for the invitation.
