Five interesting facts about nursing that you probably didn't know!

1. In South Africa, there is one nurse for every 213 people, making the profession a critical skill in the country.

2. Nursing is a very fulfilling career because nurses are committed to patient care and well-being - the gratification of knowing that one's actions have helped another person heal is indescribable.
3. The world is your oyster. Nursing opens opportunities for working in other provinces or countries. Multidisciplinary teams are made up of nurses.

4. There are three ways to becoming a nurse. A one-year Higher Certificate in Nursing, a three-year Diploma in Nursing, or a four-year Bachelor's degree.

5. Nursing is no longer seen as a traditional female career with many men entering the profession. Career development opportunities are vast from specialising and development into management roles.

This Breastfeeding Week, we honour the unique bond between mothers and their infants and recognise the vital role that breastfeeding plays in child development. UNICEF and the World Health Organization (WHO) recommend exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months, as breast milk is rich in nutrients and can help prevent illnesses such as diarrhoea and pneumonia.

However, we also understand that breastfeeding is a deeply personal experience, and not every parent can or chooses to breastfeed. Whether you're breastfeeding, using formula, or a combination of both, what matters most is the love and nourishment you provide to your child.

If you have chosen to breastfeed and are having difficulties, see our tips here which may help, or contact a local lactation specialist who can guide you: can https://www.lifehealthcare.co.za/news-and-info-hub/latest-news/making-breastfeeding-work-for-you/

This , Life Healthcare decided to do something a little different. We used 18 July as a platform to not only honour the life and legacy of Nelson Mandela, but also raise awareness of the dire gender-based violence (GBV) issue in the country.

Employee participation in Mandela Day Walks at our facilities and head office allowed staff to have some fun and honour Madiba. More importantly though, each facility made a donation entry fee with the proceeds being pooled to support our GBV initiative planned for later this year.

We thank our employees and facilities for making up a total of 67 minutes' worth of steps while walking for a worthy cause.

Together, let's make a difference in the world!
