Prana Love Yoga - Weekly Update

Hello all

How has the week been for you? Just a reminder that it is a useful practice to just pause and reflect on the past week. Try to bring all the experiences to your awareness .. the joyful .. the stressful .. the heartful and the fearful .. and then say to yourself "well done for making it through another week".

I know that the beginning of the month horse has already bolted, but November or Movember is traditionally a month where we bring attention to men's health issues. I know that June is officially Men's Health Awareness month in this country, but I am feeling a strong push to bring attention to men's health in general, but in particular depression in men.

But depression is just a symptom isn't it !! I believe that so many of our diseases are as a result of stress. Stress is universal across men and women and I know that women are struggling so much too, however I want to hone in one aspect. If we have a way of managing stress ... healthy ways .. not numbing but rather through purposeful self-care practices we may just be lucky enough to keep our heads and maybe our hearts above the stress water level and I have a sense that in general men are not prioritising self-care. Even if there are many men that are making time to exercise or do something joyful, there is without a doubt a noticeable avoidance of sharing what their inner worlds look like .. feel like. This to me is a significant contributor to the increase in depression and su***de rates in men.

But there is hope .. since becoming a yoga instructor, I have been encouraged by more and more men opening up and sharing what they are thinking ..and feeling. And this isn't just about the weather and rugby .. I mean properly talking about their struggles and saying things like "I feel like I am not coping .. or I am scared". The one common denominator, unfortunately, is that these men had all been practicing yoga for a while.

So ... we need to get the men onto a mat and into a regular practice routine. Here are some ideas:

** If its a partners /spouses scenario, make it a date ,.. come to class and grab a coffee or a bite after. The conversations after yoga I promise will be much more meaningful. Oh and by the way, when I see a couple holding hands in Savasana it truly melts my heart.

** If there are kids involved and you both can only come to the sunrise or sunset classes .. take turns to come to yoga and the other one looks after the kids. Sharing the kids' duties is a good thing anyway ... yes?

** Then there is the good old South African bribery and corruption approach ... and I will leave it up to you to decide what would be enticing enough.

** If it's not a couple or family situation but best mates, son. father, brother or cousin .. be the one that encourages a yoga class rather than beers at the pub.

And here is a little promotion that mostly fits into the bribery and corruption category but hey .. a means to a meaningful end ...

If an existing Prana Love yogi brings a new guy to the studio for at least 3 classes during the remainder of November (from Mon the 11th), not only does the new guy get those three classes for FREE but the person who brought / dragged him to class gets 20% off their next package renewal from December onward (for example this would be only R760 for a 10 class pass). And this is not subject to the new guy signing up. Even if they don't come back after the 3 free classes you still get your discount on the 1st package renewal thereafter.

My hope is that even if there are only 2 or 3 new men that join for their 3 free classes in November, perhaps we get one that continues to join classes thereafter. We will then have made a real difference .. a ripple effect that will reach far and wide.

I also want to offer that if any of the men in your lives find it difficult to express what is truly going on within them and you know they are struggling, I am more than happy to be a compassionate ear for them. 💚

**** Yoga and Poems Event - Sat 16 Nov ****

I am so looking forward to this workshop. A new event for us but I have a feeling it will become something we do from time to time. We still have spots left but I am limiting the numbers so that we can have a wonderfully intimate and heartfelt afternoon. So please contact me soon to book your spot.

Just thinking now ... this event is a wonderful way to get men to open up a little in a safe way, in that sometimes we can use the words of others to the same effect as expressing our own words. Just a thought .....

Please note the start and end times as per the poster image.

I thought I would share this poem which is likely to be one of the many that I bring with me.

A message from love - By Julia Fehrenbacher

Open …

Open every cracked and lonely window,
every false and frightened door.

Open clenched hand, closed mind.
Let the tight, the tense, the tangled, the untrue,
sift, sift slowly through.

Open like heron opens as she returns
to wind, unabashedly unfurling, stretching, lifting …
lifting her sunshine wings.

Open …
Open to every weary traveler,
to those who have lost their way.
Even when you disagree.
Even when they are unkind, unpopular, unlikeable.
Invite them to tea.

Listen ..
Listen like you have never listened before.
Marvel at how alike you are, at how sweet the honey.

Unclench, unfold, unfurl, un-decide.
Pour it all out. Take it all off.

Open like ground,
like page opens to receive fallen leaf, fallen words,
like breath opens to make space, to make space for more.

Open ten thousand times a day.
Rest and refill when you need to.

Then open, open some more.

**** Saturday Surprise classes ***

Holy Moly, did we feel some strong and perhaps heavy energy in this morning's QiGong class. It is often misunderstood as an easy class because the movements are gentle and fluid, however because we are encouraged to ground ourselves and focus our awareness through the body, it can feel intense. I think at this time of the year we may be carrying a lot of trapped energy and emotion and then when given a chance for the nervous system to settle, some of this was released today.

Thank you Michelle Sung Healing Acupuncture for skillfully guiding us through this process of awareness and release.

An early announcement that for our next Saturday Surprise class ,.... Nestene Botha will be guiding us through a Dance Yoga Flow. These classes are truly amazing. I know that some of you are not able to join Nestene's Tuesday evening class, so this is your chance to come and enjoy. No dance experience needed. Guys and Gals welcome.

**** Schedule for the week ****

There are no changes to the schedule but don't forget the Dance Yoga Flow on Saturday morning and the Yoga & Poems workshop on Saturday afternoon.

I hope you have a beautiful week ahead and I hope to see you your mat,

Men’s Health Promotion @ Prana Love Yoga (Tableview, Cape Town)

November or Movember is traditionally a month where we bring attention to men’s health issues and I am feeling a strong push to encourage men’s health in general, but in particular depression in men.

So here is a little promotion that hopefully will encourage you to bring a new male partner, friend, family member, colleague .. to the studio:

* If an existing Prana Love yogi brings a new guy to the studio for at least 3 classes during the remainder of November (from Mon the 11th), not only does the new guy get those three classes for FREE but the person who brought / dragged him to class gets 20% off their next package renewal in December (for example this would be only R760 for a 10 class pass). And this is not subject to the new guy signing up. Even if they don’t come back after the 3 free classes you still get your discount on the 1st package renewal thereafter.

My hope is that even if there are only 2 or 3 new men that join for their 3 free classes in November, perhaps we get one that continues to join classes thereafter. We will then have made a real difference .. a ripple effect that will reach far and wide.

PRANA LOVE YOGA - WEEKLY UPDATE

Hello yogis

How has the week been for you? I feel like there are some who can't wait for the year to finish ... it's been a tough one for you and it is time to rest ... others are thinking that it's going too fast .. the holidays and xmas are going to arrive like tomorrow and that's too soon .. shopping .. family gathering weirdness .. budgets get blown.

Either way it is important for us to not get caught up in the rush .. and perhaps even not caught up in the urge to go overboard with the spending ... after all that's what the big retailers are hoping for .. but often this leaves us feeling rather empty inside after the initial 2 minutes of excitement of something new .. and of course not just empty inside but empty bank account too.

In the mindfulness teachings and way of being, we practice becoming aware of the reactivity patterns within us. At first this is almost impossible because thought becomes emotion becomes behaviour at a million miles per hour. However, over time with practice, we can see it coming and with contemplation we can also pre-empt what is likely to happen next.

We have patterns where we have a thought that is a repeat offender, that says: "they don't think I am smart". This triggers an emotional reaction ... perhaps feeling anxious or ashamed and we may then behave in a way that tries to counter that initial thought and emotion .. maybe we try too hard to prove that we are smart and valuable or maybe we withdraw .. both not serving us.

And sadly ... no-one was thinking we were not smart in the first place. This was just in our heads as a result of experience and conditioning of the past.

So paying attention to these patterns will reveal firstly that mostly the reactivity was "unnecessary" as the initial thought was not valid, and secondly we will be able to map how the reactivity unfolds. We will start to recognise the patterns; which situations .. with which people ... time of day ... how we were feeling energetically ... triggered the reactivity. From there we can gradually start to intercept and perhaps not go down the full path. This done a few times creates a sense within us that we have more control, and we feel huge relief.

Of course this is not an overnight evolution, but that's okay .. little incremental shifts are all we need to feel a huge difference. Mindfulness based practices such as meditation, mindful movement and others can facilitate this shift from triggered reactivity to a conscious calmer response.

So what has this got to do with holidays and not going overboard with the spending ... well in fact everything. Consider the originating thought and related emotions behind why we feel we need to have more or something better or newer. Or why we want to buy the latest and greatest for our kids. By becoming more aware of these inner workings we may choose to do things differently. We also know that the larger organisations spend millions working on ways to trigger a stimulus and response .... impulse purchase. Think of the big billboard with this high definition close up image of your most favourite fast food. They know that these images result in people taking a detour straight to their drive through and purchasing this meal ... even if they were not hungry. But if we are able to see this happening as it unfolds .. "okay, that picture looks yummy ... and I sense this urge to go and buy one .. but I rather choose to take a few breaths and drive on, knowing that the urge will subside.

Moving from triggered reactivity to a conscious calmer response .. I hope this brings some emotional ease and saves you a bunch of cash 😁

***** Our Saturday Surprise Class was so amazing ****

Our Saturday Surprise class was guided by our newly engaged teaching duo ... Rachel and Tumelo. What a wonderful class .. because we got to experience a combination of a high energy physical martial arts based routine and a gentle somatic movement practice. It was also wonderful because these two love birds were so lovely together.

I am sure we will be having more classes at the studio from this teaching duo but I must also tell you that they are hosting a retreat early next year where this combination of practices will be explored more deeply. https://www.facebook.com/share/p/AwVc45wFvkXELg1A/

Well done Rachel & Tumelo

**** Other wonderful practices combinations ****

Another wonderful combination of practices was experienced at our Yin Yoga & Sound Bath event. What a deeply nourishing and grounding way to end the day. The shift in the energy from the beginning of the workshop to the end was so noticeable. Everyone walked away with warm smiles and it almost felt like they were floating out. Thank you Vanessa Soulful Yoga & Healing for your sound healing gifts.

Talking about combinations of practices that flow magically together, don't forget about the Yoga & Poems workshop on Sat the 16th. This is not a technical poem writing workshop but rather a time for us to read some of our favourite poems and a gentle flow ... and who knows, maybe some of us will be inspired to put some words on paper.

|
|

**** Free Beach Yoga & Cold Water Swim ****

Seems like the theme this newsletter is that things are always better in duos.

This past Tuesday we had such a good turnout and the collective energy and sense of community was again so precious. What was even more heart warming, was that I have had a few people come to me after the yoga over the past few weeks, to share that it was their very first yoga class and how moving it was for them. This is what makes it all so worthwhile. Us yoga teachers take a little trip to heaven when someone tries yoga for the first time and when they add that something shifted within them, then we feel that in that very moment all the problems of the world have just been solved.

**** Prana Love Yoga - Weekly Update ****

Hi all

It has been a wonderful week for me, I have been feeling rather exhausted but that's okay because I have had many joyous moments to more than see me through. How has your week been?

One of those joyous moments was my mom's 80th birthday on Tuesday. This milestone in her life felt different for me .. I sensed us coming closer together as a family. And plus my oldest son, Brandon, who is 28, took a bus trip from PE to surprise her for her birthday. So I have been able to spend time with him which has been so so wonderful. It was also so heartwarming to see Kian beaming with joy as he simply adores his older brother, even though they are nearly 13 years apart in age.

As part of my mom's birthday gifts we arranged a family photo shoot. I can't wait to see the pics. The time together .. sitting close .. arms around each other .. being silly ... laughing .. crying was really special.

I also reached out to family and her friends .. some from way back then ...and asked them to send a little birthday wish video clip, which we then combined into one video. Because it was a secret, all the videos were sent to me. I got quite emotional watching each video. Such beautiful words from people that knew my mom from decades ago and ones that have only met her more recently. The messages were consistently thanking her for her kindness, support and her wisdom. Some of them I watched a few times because I felt I needed to be reminded of who my mom truly is.

Through life's journey, the ups and downs, twists and turns, joy and suffering ... we can sometimes lose that sense of who someone truly is. Perhaps it gets distorted by the conflicts or maybe life's pace is so fast we don't stop long enough to truly see our loved ones properly.

When the family got together on the day of her birthday, after spending a lovely relaxed time together, she shared with us that she was experiencing feelings of guilt and felt like she hadn't always been a good parent and wished she had been more at ease and connected with us when we were kids. Such a powerful moment of vulnerability. And of course we reassured her because all parents feel that they don't do a good enough job, And i can't imagine how difficult it must have been for her, having 3 children by the age of 21. I also know that the intergenerational trauma ran deep through her family lineage.

As a child, even when you are now an adult, it is so so healing to hear a parent acknowledge their mistakes .. allowing forgiveness to gently emerge. Obviously, first prize is to acknowledge our mistakes as close to the moment as possible .. but it is never too late ... even if it is decades later this is still huge.

A good practice, as parents, is to do a check-in with ourselves after each interaction with our children. Ask ourselves these questions: "Did I leave them feeling intact? How could they be feeling after that interaction? Would they be feeling safe, supported, valued and loved? Or could they be feeling unsafe and unsure of our unconditional love and perhaps even like they don't have a place"?

If you do this check-in with openness and sense that you have perhaps left them feeling unsafe and hurt, we need to respond to this straight away .. go to our children and apologize .. no excuses .. no justification ... not defending ourselves .. just letting them know that we have realised that we could have managed that interaction better.

If the day was a complete whirlwind and there was not a moment to pause, we can do the check-in at the end of the day, before the kids fall asleep. And if our intuition tells us that we need to apologise ,,,, let's do it wholeheartedly so that they can fall asleep feeling safe in our love for them ... and maybe we will sleep well too !!!

Love you mom ♥️

The Ullie Kaye Poetry poem called "Gentle People" is for you.

**** 300 swims in 300 days for Kian and I ****

Yesterday (Sat 26 Oct), Kian and I took our 300th ocean dip in 300 days. What a special moment and it was even more special because Brandon joined us in the water .. which is huge, because he is not really a fan of ocean swimming, especially when the water is 11 degrees.

I still can't believe that we have kept it going. We have 66 more swims in 66 days to complete our challenge, And as I have said before, the quality of connection and bonding through this daily joyous ritual will never be forgotten.

Breath Love Joy

I feel so fortunate that in my mid-forties I realised that there must be more to life. I was living on auto-pilot and my life had become predictable without any meaningful sense of purpose. I was not unhappy but rather I lacked inspiration.

When I realised this I started a journey of self-observation. This entailed trying to observe myself from a distance. I did this for a few months but it was quite difficult as I was not able to maintain this observation for more than a few minutes. But I knew that it was a worthwhile process as I was already learning things about myself that I did not know.

I little while into this process I came across yoga and subsequently meditation. There was definitely synchronicity in this discovery as these practices were the vehicle that I needed to deepen this self-observation journey.

I used the formula; thoughts trigger emotion and emotion trigger behaviour, to reflect on what parts of me were operating on autopilot and what parts of me were truly me. My observation confirmed the theory that many of our automatic thoughts (which may trigger destructive and unwanted behaviour), are irrational. These irrational thoughts have developed over our entire lifetimes and cannot be easily changed. However the observation of them is a critical start to any transformation required. We will possibly identify personal biases, limiting beliefs, traits and characteristics that we did not know about, triggers such as certain scenarios or people that cause unwanted emotion.
