Purple Kennel Project - Cape Town
The Purple Kennel Project is an animal welfare support initiative providing kennels to needy woofers!
In all the excitement of yesterday's amazing story .... we forgot to mention that we were also thrilled to give Bianka from Die Honnemense two much needed kennels thanks to a generous monthly donation from the fabulous von Bach family.
Bianka is one of so many smaller, one lady band organisation's doing amazing outreach work for the animals behind the scenes. Bianka works mainly in the very impoverished areas of Kraaifontein...and with very little regular funds. She does not even have a page anymore to share her work or her urgent needs, due to her previous one being shutdown for no reason.
Thanks to all our donors for helping us to help selfless, people like Bianka help our furries.π
Our bank details to sponsor a kennel is on our cover page. Thank you! πΎπ
"It's a small world" is a term we all often use .... but never was there more confirmation of this than the amazing story we have to share with you today....
Heidi and Matthew arrived today from the Halli Trust - Non-Profit Organisation in the Helderberg area, where they support and educate the local underprivileged community and also care for and rehabilitate the four legged residents too.
A few weeks ago they contacted me, to say they had received a generous donation and because they wanted to be prepared for the needy animals in winter, they had allocated a certain amount for Kennels....22 to be exact.
So having prepped the kennels all day on Sunday, today was collection day, and only this morning did we learn the full story..... Turns out that Heidi, co-founder of the Halli Trust, was interviewed on the local radio channel Helderberg FM last year and spoke in detail about the good work they do. Little did she know that a South African called Johan from Somerset West, where he still owns property was actually tuning into the programme, where he now lives in Switzerland!!
He got in contact with Heidi and revealed that after sharing the Halli Trust story with his dog loving neighbour, Frau Myrtha Loeffel, who sadly had no family to bequeath her estate to...and knowing she was not in good health, she had decided to make a generous donation in her will for the Halli trust, on behalf of herself and her two past beloved dogs, Timo and Vasco.
The stars were most definitely aligned, in this incredible story ....and that thanks to Johan and his recently passed neighbour Frau Myrtha Loeffel for doing some generous forward thinking whilst many miles away ....thanks to you, there will be many warm and snug woofers in the Helderberg area this winter. May the donor rest in peace knowing what a difference she made.π
The icing on the cake was that Corrine, my dog bed making angel in Edgemead, had recently gifted several beds that were donated to this very worthy organization... thank you too for your generosity!!
Once again....when the world comes together, we can do truly fabulous things!!! πππ
We have said it before ....and we will say it again, "Successful animal welfare is a culmination of many people doing good in some way!!"
Today was a great example of exactly that.... we had two kennels to donate to Natasha founder of Dogs Deserve Better Rehabilitation Centre near Malmsbury, just how to get them to her?
Armandt kindly volunteered to collect them from Purple Kennel HQ this morning and drop them off at the shelter.
On top of that, I was contacted by the lovely yesterday who also had several bags of donations for Natasha of dog coats, leads, harnesses, food, blankets etc ....all sorts of goodies, and so Armandt was able to take them too. Thanks again to them both.
Finally, thanks once more to Connie Hutton, for sponsoring the aforementioned two kennels, her donations at the end of last year, are now coming in very handy.
So in short, whether it's collecting items for a shelter, volunteering your time or services or even just sharing urgent requests for help ...just do SOMETHING!! Lots of bits of help turn into something big! ππ
Good morning, folks ... It's a very happy Saturday on this side as we get to share these very overdue pics from a few months back when thanks to two regular donors... Connie and Jossi, these two gorgeous woofers from the impoverished Scottsdene area of Kraaifontein are now warm and snug at night in their very own cosy homes.
'Beloved' the precious princess in the first pics had nothing but a wooden box to sleep in before Bianca from Die Honnemense identified her as an urgent kennel candidate, after ensuring she was first sterilized and vaccinated of course.
Next up was the handsome Tiger who could not stop smiling when receiving his first very own 'man cave'. Again he has been sterilized and vaccinated and living his best life!
Many thanks again to Connie Hutton and Jossi Glegg Steyn for your continued support, it is so appreciated and also thank you Bianca for all of the amazing work you do for all the furries in need.ππ
When viewing at the pics I shared yesterday from my kennel outreach day with Kerry Kleinhans at WOW Project... you will have seen that a dog called Joey in a shocking state was surrendered ... it is only fair that I share the follow up news posted just 3 months later from The WOW Project ...not just of a happy healthy dog, but a new wonderful home too! These are the moments we must celebrate π
πΎπHELLO LONG LOST FRIENDS......
Sam, Bruno and team here .... I have been trying to share this update for a good few days now, but with my tourism day job still in full swing, there has honestly not been a spare minute. It was clearly meant to be, though, as when I checked the date this morning, I realized that it was exactly 8 YEARS since Purple Kennel was born ... it's been a roller coaster ride with ups and downs, but here we are, ready for our 8th winter season, where our main mission as always is to get as many warm kennels out there for township dogs in need of shelter.
πΎπA QUICK REMINDER as to how our project works....
We ask the animal loving public to sponsor a brand new kennel available in various sizes :
R410 - Medium Kennel
R525 - Large Kennel
R720 - Jumbo Kennel
Each kennel comes with a waterproof laminated label complete with either the donors name, name of a birthday dedication maybe or perhaps a company name & logo, or even in loving memory of a friend, family member or pet.
We then donate the sponsored kennels to various animal welfare partners who know exactly where they are needed most, as they are the ones visiting the impoverished areas. We do always encourage donors to designate a welfare org. in their own community and even suggest fundraising for them to get more kennels. If not, we have many deserving organizations who will be grateful for them.
All we ask in return is that the welfare orgs send a photo of the lucky dog who got the new kennel....and then pass that on to the kind donor.
πΎπIN OTHER NEWS .....
The purple kennel is actually already rolling as last week we had no less than 79 Kennels delivered to Purple Kennel HQ. These were made up of several generous donations received from regular supporters throughout summer as well as a couple of bulk orders from Animal welfare orgs. Who were blessed with some generous direct donations.
Bruno, me, and the team spent the weekend prepping and our first batch of 25 kennels leave for the Stanford Animal Welfare early tomorrow morning and will soon be delivered to the local township woofers before the winter weather kicks in!
πΎπOUTREACH WITH KERRY....
At least once a year, I like to go out of my comfort zone and spend a day with Kerry at the The The WOW Project who does amazing outreach work in Atlantis and Wolwerivier. Thanks to our donors, we had donated her ten kennels and so on December 29th, just before we wished 2023 farewell ... I joined her in delivering the precious cargo.
As always, it was not an easy day out in the field.... like many of you, I just do not know how the animal welfare field workers do what they do day in day out seeing so much sadness....and cruelty, but just know I am grateful they do and that they are my ultimate heroes.
Although I spent much of the day in tears, I also got great joy in seeing the happy dogs who received the kennels and how much their lives were instantly improved. DON'T EVER UNDERESTIMATE THE DIFFERENCE YOUR GENEROSITY & KINDNESS MAKES.
I am 3 months late sharing these attached pics ...but hopefully they will tell a story and encourage you to do your bit of good where you can. Whether it's a quick whipround in the office, a cake sale in your local neighborhood ... or a lunch/book club collection - we appreciate every single donation. A huge thank you to all who have enabled us to send almost 3500 kennels out there!
Our bank details are on our cover page
Bless you all ! ππππ
Festive greetings from the team, to all our valued Purple Kennel donors, and welfare partners, without either Purple Kennel Project would not exist!!
Summer is always a much quieter time here at Purple Kennel HQ. Incoming donations slow down dramatically during the warmer weather ....but it is also a super busy time for me with my day job in Tourism.
However, behind the scenes, thanks to our special regular donors, we have still been sending out a few kennels here and there... infact, we have almost hit the 3330 mark in terms of total kennels distributed in total during the last few years. Watch this space, as we will be sharing some of those latest Happy Homing pics later this week.
I also have ten kennels all ready and waiting to be donated to the The WOW Project
following another one of their successful sterilization campaigns. I will be returning to Cape Town this week after a festive family visit to Scotland and am hoping to personally assist Kerry from WOW Project with distributing these kennels.... always so lovely to see the gratitude on the woofer's faces in person!!
All that remains is to say a huge thank you to our donors for your incredible support and for continuing to keep my dream alive of keeping needy woofers warm..... and also to our selfless welfare partners who work day and night , 7 days a week, to make such a huge difference to the lives of our furry friends in need.
Hope to do it all again in 2024 and that we can rely on your continued support - Thank you! X

Ten gorgeous new kennels left Purple Kennel HQ today.... thanks once again to the neverending efforts of animal welfare fundraising queen, Tracey Burke from Do it for the Dogs ... an online shopping platform selling pre-loved quality clothing and accessories at amazing prices, whose revenue then helps add some love to the lives of some of the many under privileged woofers out there!
It was a pretty hot one today, so Bruno was not really in mood for working and doing his quality control checks.... but was still more than happy to do his usual meet and greet, when he saw Tracey again!!
These Kennels will be heading off to Kassiesbaai near Arniston to be distributed.... this now being the 3rd delivery to this area and making a real difference to the local furries .... pics to follow!!
Thanks to everyone for your continued support!! Over 3225 kennels now out there keeping soggy doggies dry and also giving much needed shade from the sun! - we could not do it without you !! π
There is nothing better than knowing you have a team you can rely on.....
15 Extra large kennels left for Stanford Animal Welfare Society this morning, all sponsored by their generous local community.
I had to unfortunately leave for an early business appointment, so left Bruno in charge to supervise the handover to Roy our regular driver.
As always....being the dedicated Purple Kennel team player that he is, everything went off without a hitch!
Thanks Bruno! π
πIt can only be a good day after seeing these awesome pics from Kerry our friend at The WOW Project based in Melkbos.
πKerry's commitment to Animal welfare spreads far and beyond her immediate area and is a busy multi tasker of note running from one area to the next. The huge Wolwerivier informal settlement has been one of her on-going projects for a while, where she not only organizes sterilisations, vaccinations and sees to other medicinal needs, but also does regular food drops for the few hundred animals residing in this area.
πKerry loves nothing more than being able to give out Kennels to newly sterilised woofers, knowing how much their lives will improve!
πThanks Kerry for the selfless and very often heartbreaking work you do, you really are making such a difference to so many furry lives!
πHuge thanks of course also goes to our amazing donors without whom, there would be no Purple Kennel Project! Thanks to you guys, there will be more kennels on their way to Wolwerivier and other deserving woofers very soon !
Happy weekend and dont forget to read the individual stories in the captions.ππ
Hey there folks.... ππ
Sorry we have been quiet. Traditionally Purple Kennel has primarily always been a winter project. Mostly, because that is when the township woofers need us most, and when the donations are more forthcoming.... but to be honest, it has also suited me, as I work in the tourism industry and so the Summer months are my craziest time ....hence the silence!!
The good news though, thanks to some loyal regular supporters, the donations have infact been trickling in slowly on the back burner and so this week, we were able to place a nice order of 40 kennels, 15 of which are soon off to Stanford Animal Welfare Society again thanks to the amazing support they receive from their own local community.
Talking of local community.... instead of buying family and friends a whole load of stuff they do not need this Christmas, why not make a difference for the needy furries in YOUR community and sponsor a kennel in a loved ones name.... or perhaps have an end of year collection at work and sponsor a kennel with your company logo?
Simply make a donation for a Medium (R410), Large (R525) or Jumbo (R680) kennel - give us the personal details to go on the label and we will then donate it on your behalf to a deserving welfare organization, where ever you choose! ( we can assist with that)
They will then send pics of the lucky woofer that got the kindly sponsored kennel. There really is no greater feeling than helping an animal who cannot help them themselves!
Thanks to Bruno and Lola who supervised this afternoon's delivery whilst I was out working.
PS: We have also received some fabulous pics in recently from earlier kennel sponsors, watch this space as we will be sharing soon! π
Purple Kennel Project is blessed to receive support from far and wide and following the weekend's devastating floods, that left people and animals suffering, we are even more grateful for the recent sponsorship of TEN kennels from regular donor Doris Meixner in Uganda in celebration of the 10th birthday of her lodge there -Chameleon Hill Forest Lodge.
See the full story below and sending great thanks to Doris and of course African Tails for distribution them.ππ
The good, the bad and the even better news....
The good news ....is that the fabulous Tracey Burke from Do it for the Dogs popped by on Friday to pick up no less than 14 kennels that she and her friends had funded destined for Kassiesbaai near Arniston. Tracey works with a lovely lady called Kyra, who looks out for the woofers in this area.
The bad news .... they are not in Kassiesbaai yet and given this horrendous storm, wish to God they were, but ...
The even better news, is that for several dogs at least, this will be the last storm they endure without shelter!! Best of all ...Tracey has committed to sending out more kennels to more areas in need ....just as long as she gets support.
HOW CAN YOU HELP ? ......For those that do not know, Do it for the Dogs is an Instagram based project selling pre-loved quality clothing and other bits and pieces... where 70% of the profits go to various animal welfare projects.
This is guilt free shopping at its best! Tracey's fundraising helps so many welfare orgs with sterilisations and general needs as well as kennels via our project.
Go take a look now ...there are so many bargains! https://instagram.com/doitforthedogsza?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==
Thank you Tracey and Kyra, cannot wait to see those happy furry faces in Kassiesbaai! π
Meanwhile....stay safe, keep warm and bring those woofers inside!!!! πΎ
I do not know what has happened to our Spring here in the Cape after hearing it was SNOWING on Table Mountain last night... but I so know I am grateful for every single kennel out their keeping our furries warm in this cold weather!
Talking of which, we recently gave the fabulous guys at Chocolate Angels Animal Rescue FIVE generously sponsored kennels for some of the needy woofers in Kalbaskraal, an impoverished community on the Cape West Coast.
When receiving the attached , thanks to two of the kennels being extra large... we were thrilled to see that SEVEN dogs are now sleeping snug and warm at night. HUGE thanks to our generous donors highlighted on the attached labels - they are so appreciated!
Talking of which .... the donations tend to dry up at this time of year, and for that reason Purple Kennel has traditionally been a winter project.... however, with YOUR help, I would still like to try and do one truck order a month. The truth is ...even when the warmer weather does eventually arrive, shelter is still needed!
I still need a few more sponsors before I can put in our next order ...and promise you there are so many in need out there. Here are a few ideas:
π Do a raffle or collection at work, bookclub or lunch event.
π Celebrate a birthday or someone's life by sponsoring a kennel in their name!
π If you are a corporate company...tick your Social Responsibilities box by sponsoring kennels with your company logo
Please enjoy these and have a lekker long Heritage Day Weekend.... We will definitely be routing for the boys in Turquoise!! Go Bokke! ππΏπ¦
Ps: see the captions for the stories πΎπΎ
Spring is definitely here somewhere says Bruno.... "I can smell it!" π
Happy Sunday folks!
Greetings everyone.... Spring appears to be seriously missing in action right now and the 5 minutes of hail stones we experienced this morning....was just the icing on the cake of last nights combination of strong winds and torrential rain!
Even hardworking Bruno put in for a leave day and spent the whole of Monday under a blanket ....meanwhile Bianka from Die Honnemense....who does much needed outreach work in the impoverished areas of Kraaifontein took local 4 legged resident Tyson to be sterilized and vaccinated today ....and his reward was a brand new kennel....thanks to the kind generosity of Kyra and Tristan von Bach ...regular donors of note!!
Just look where Tyson was sleeping last night during all that horrific Cape weather ...tonight he will feel like he has arrived in heaven! No leaks and a lovely soft bed!
Thank you for helping us to do what we do!!!π
Whilst we are waiting patiently for the Spring weather here in the Cape to warm up .... I know I speak for many when I say that like these at least warm our hearts more than you will ever know!
Thanks to our incredible loyal donors, we were recently able to send 10 gorgeous kennels in the direction of Kerry ....a Super woman of note who wears no Cape, just works 7 days a week looking after the welfare of our 4 legged friends from Melkbos to Atlantis and pretty much everywhere in between! Otherwise known as the incredible The WOW Project
When perusing these pics .... we get that life is not as rosy as we would like for these woofers.... but everything in life is relative, and whilst we would all like to scoop them up and find them all the loving homes they deserve .... do not underestimate how a simple thing like warm and snug shelter can change their lives for the better.
Thank you again for all of our incredible supporters who have chosen to make a difference in the lives of these precious furries.ππ
Ps: click on the pics to find out the story behind them.
Do you remember the 35 Kennels we sent off to Montagu a couple of weeks back, thank to many generous donations from their local community?
The fabulous team at Animals Matter Langeberg are gradually getting the kennels out there to the impoverished areas and those who need them most! Just look at those smiling furry faces!!
Hoping to get an awesome batch of soon, showing the grateful recipients and their new homes... just had to share these teasers in the meantime as especially on a rainy day ...it sure makes my heart warm and hope it does yours too!!ππ
Morning folks... just when we think Spring is here to stay, it was another chilly, wet and windy night here in the Cape.
All the more reason to be so grateful that gorgeous Milo here was sleeping soundly and snug in his brand new kennel, long before the rain kicked in....and what a happy boy he looks too!
HUGE Thanks to Adre from Cape Coastal Homes, for your continued generosity, who for a while now kindly makes donations when she makes a sale! Thanks to our friends at PetPals too of course for always finding the perfect recipients of our kennels.
Keep warm everyone! πππ
It's a new week.... and early Monday morning 6 more kennels prepped, quality checked by Bruno and ready to head off to deserving woofers in the Wolverivier and Atlantis areas, thanks to Kerry at The WOW Project.
Don't you just love a positive start to the week!? Thanks to all these incredible, individual donors who all chose to make a difference to furries in need ...you WILL go to heaven. π
Here comes Spring!! ππππΌπΌπΌ
We love to send kennels off to deserving woofers any day of the week .... but somehow seems especially more heart warming on a rainy day!
Just knowing that hopefully for TEN more doggies in this case, it will be the last time they have to shiver at night in the wet and cold!
HUGE thanks to and her team at Chameleon Hill Forest Lodge in beautiful Uganda, who sponsored these kennels in celebration of the lodge's 10th birthday! We are so happy for the furries!
They have been donated to African Tails who will ensure they go to deserving recipients- watch this space for those

Thanks to the huge generosity of the Stanford community in the Overberg... Stanford Animal Welfare Society received 50 of our kennels in the last couple of months, which are being given out to those most deserving woofers in the impoverished areas.
Here are a few to warm your hearts and ours! Thanks for sharing Wendy π
Happy Monday folks ....its been a very Summer-like, almost Spring kind of Winter's day!
There are a few cold nights ahead of us still.... So HUGE thanks to Jason and Linzi from Chocolate Angels Animal Rescue for collecting 5 kennels from us this evening.
They do amazing, much needed rescue and outreach work in the impoverished area of Kalbaskraal on the Cape West Coast and have already identified some needy woofers that will be so grateful for these warm homes.
Massive thanks to my Travel friend Kerry Wyatt, my friends at Scotties Cape Town and regular donor angel Connie Hutton foe sponsoring these lovely kennels and for truly making a difference to several furry lives! π
Cannot wait to see the π
Happy Sunday folks ....
I wanted to take a moment to lead by example and hopefully inspire you by showing you how easy it is to help provide shelter for a needy township woofer whilst, also showing loved ones you care!
My amazing parents who live in the highlands of Scotland ....have both turned 80 years old this year, infact it is my Mom's big day today! π₯³
When digging for ideas for gifts, they both told me the same thing...." We have everything we need and do not need anymore stuff" Both being avid animal lovers of note and having themselves supported their local animal rescue org for many years .... I suddenly remembered that it was the perfect opportunity to practice what I preach!
As we almost hit the 200 mark of kennels distributed since May this year (3200 in total!) ....I am so thrilled to sponsor a kennel in their names in celebration of their milestone birthdays and know that they will be as happy as me to know that another dog is warm and snug ....no longer having to sleep in the cold and rain!
Happy 80th Mom and Dad .... May you enjoy many more years together! π
This new home will go out this week...pics to follow soon! π
Whoa! When it rains in Cape Town .... it sure does rain and is always a stark reminder of why we do what we do !
Earlier this week, these 3 individual woofers got some well deserved shelter and thankfully were sleeping warm and dry last night.
Huge thanks to Yana Lubbe four sponsoring 6 kennels for the fabulous team at FAW Fisantekraal Animal Welfare to distribute. They had already given out four of them, and then 2 days ago, some volunteers spied the two very cold black and tan dogs. With rain on its way that night ...they grabbed the last two kennels for them and when driving past later were pleased to see they were sleeping soundly I'm their new homes. π
Then I also received a call from Lindie at Aniwell South Africa who when delivering 3 other kennels last week came across an old dog called Tiger ...his owner had died and was now being looked after by the niece who actually loves him very much, but her hubby does not allow him to sleep in the house.
Lindie begged me for a kennel and having just received a delivery was able to help last minute, thanks to the kindness of regular donors Kyra and Tristan von Bach .... She delivered it yesterday...and just in time for last nights down pour! 10 year old Tiger is now a happy boy and I even received a thank you voice note from the grateful niece. These moments make it all worth it! π
Ps: after the photos, the kennel was moved to a more sheltered area and put on a wooden palletπ
Stay warm everyone and bring those woofers inside!!! π§βοΈ
Happy Monday folks ...βοΈ
Just when we thought Spring was here early, we experienced a very wet and windy night here in the Cape, to remind us our work must continue as so many animals sleep with no protection from the elements.
Thankfully... we get to share more of the lucky ones this morning, who we know slept snug and warm last night.
These 3 kennels were kindly distributed by Lindie from Aniwell South Africa in the Wallisdene area of Kraaifontein.
Two extra large kennels from regular Purple Kennel donor Connie Hutton went to Coco the pit bull who could not wait to check out her new digs .... and to a Mother and daughter pair called Smarty and Snoopy who were happy to snuggle up together in their new bo***ir! Thank you Connie once again for helping us to make a difference.π
Then huge thanks also to Adre Eksteen for the last of 3 kennels she sponsored ... that went to a black and tan cutie named Scooby-Doo! He was super happy to have a home he could call his own!
Keep warm everyone.... and remember, to think of us when looking to make a difference in our furry community. ππ
There is no snoozy Sunday at Purple Kennel HQ today ....10 more gorgeous kennels generously sponsored by the attached individuals with love are on their way to The WOW Project having been gratefully receive by Kerry in Melkbos.
Kerry had another successful Sterilization day last week, in Atlantis exit 13, so always likes to reward those more responsible pet owners with a kennel for their woofer and in the process hopes to encourage more owners to do the right thing for their animals too.
Best of all, we received an amazing donation of the most gorgeous patchwork beds from via her Mom who lives Knysna who generously makes them to donate to animal welfare! How beautiful are they?
Thanks so much to Christel and her Mom and indeed all our kennel donors. Look out for some Happy Homing pics next weekend hopefully, where we will share the lucky new recipients of these warm kennels and snug beds.
Also another 36 more Kennels arriving Tuesday! Have a great week everyone!π
Thank you to the ladies of the Glitter group of female Angels that are on a mission to put everything right in this world!
They help so many charities with their love and donations and Purple Kennel Project - Cape Town feels immensely proud to work along side them when assisting them with kennels for these two gorgeous woofers in Grabouw. Just look at how their lives have now changed for the better!!! Thank you ladies! π
