A recent report highlights that South African schools are unprepared for the climate crisis, with:

- Only 22% of schools teaching climate change in their curriculum
- 70% of schools lacking basic infrastructure to adapt to extreme weather events
- 60% of schools having no emergency plan in place for climate-related disasters
- Disadvantaged schools being the most vulnerable due to lack of resources

The report calls for urgent action to integrate climate education, improve infrastructure, and develop emergency plans to ensure schools are resilient to the climate crisis.

WHAT IS JET IN THE NEWS?
JET In The News is a short summary recap of top events, relevant information and discussions, and articles on Just Energy Transition in South Africa from the last week. It aims to keep us all in the loop as it relates to our Just Energy Future!

15/07/2024

In a recent conversation with us about what it would take to center justice in the current energy transition, this is what Centre for Environmental Rights Climate Advocacy Lawyer, Brandon Abdinor had to say.

“Consider the implications of the oversight of justice. At the heart of the discourse surrounding our energy transition lies the need for a fundamental commitment to radical truth. We must collectively acknowledge the stark realities of our current energy systems, confronting the disproportionate impacts they have on marginalised communities and vulnerable ecosystems. Only through a proper assessment of the facts can we see a path towards a more equitable and sustainable future.”

South Africa’s climate change bill, passed by the National Assembly in October 2023, remains unsigned by the President. The bill aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote a greener economy. As a highly vulnerable country to climate change, South Africa urgently needs this legislation to address food and water insecurity and align with global climate goals. The article emphasizes the importance of signing the bill into law to ensure a sustainable future for the country.

Quote from the new anointed minister of forestry, fisheries and environment:
“In this portfolio, the big issue is the just energy transition and energy financing and I think that I can bring my expertise into that, so specifically focus on developing the financial models that will be able to accelerate our movement towards the just energy transition. That would be enormously beneficial to the portfolio and, frankly, to the country,” George said.

Green Hydrogen Resources and Information:

What is Green Hydrogen?
Green hydrogen is produced by electrolysis of water using renewable energy, making it a clean energy source. Whilst this form of energy production is moving forward, there are actually quite a few hopes and fears surrounding it.

Environmental Concerns:

- Water scarcity: Green hydrogen production requires significant water amounts, which can exacerbate water shortages in areas where water is already scarce.
- Water scarcity impacts:
- Affects people's lives, particularly in rural areas.
- Over 26% of schools and 45% of clinics in South Africa lack water access.
- Leads to difficulties in health, education, gender equity, and economic development.

Green Hydrogen Industry Challenges:

- Electrolysis efficiency: The process of producing hydrogen from water requires efficient and cost-effective electrolyzes.
- Nitrogen oxides emissions: Hydrogen combustion produces harmful pollutants, similar to other combustion reactions.

Overall, while green hydrogen is a clean energy source, its production and use must be carefully managed to mitigate water scarcity and emissions concerns.

In 2017, the Cape Town High Court protected South Africa's environment by ruling against the government's nuclear procurement plan, which would have added 9,600 MW of nuclear power. The court deemed the plan unconstitutional and invalid, citing a lack of public scrutiny and due process. This ruling prevented a potentially disastrous environmental impact, as nuclear power poses significant risks to the environment, including nuclear waste disposal issues, water pollution, and the threat of accidents. The government's plan was also criticized for its unaffordability and lack of necessity, with suspicions of ulterior motives tied to the Gupta family and Russian interests. The court's decision upheld democracy and the rule of law, ensuring that environmental decisions are made with transparency and accountability.

Both the nuclear deal from 2017 and the rolling 2024 koeberg nuclear station’s life extension application reveal the importance of transparency, public scrutiny, and careful decision-making in environmental policymaking. The 2017 court ruling protected the environment by invalidating a harmful nuclear procurement plan, while the 2024 licence extension process raises concerns about environmental safety and transparency.

PRESS RELEASE: NNR public hearings taking place in Tableview, Athlone and Atlantis 6 – 8 June 05/06/2024

READ: "Koeberg’s 40 year operational licence comes to an end in July 2024 and Eskom is pushing for a twenty year extension from the National Nuclear Regulator (NNR). The NNR is now holding public hearings in Tableview, Athlone and Atlantis from the 6th to the 8th of June to consult on the proposed life extension.

The process of public consultation run by the NNR has been beset by issues. The NNR announced the first comment period in January 2023 which civil society organisations found inadequate due to information that was being withheld from the public by both Eskom and the NNR. Similar complaints have been made about this follow up process of public hearings and submissions."

As we approach the public hearings for the long-term operation extension license for Koeberg Nuclear Power Station, we engaged community members through capacity building workshops in The Northern Cape.

The reason these workshops were so important is because the low level and intermediate level radioactive waste from Koeberg is stored in Vaalputs in The Northern Cape. This site was chosen for the waste disposal during the apartheid era without consultation of communities.

This legacy of the apartheid era and the risks it poses for future generations is something communities were not aware of.

These are some reflections from community members.

Today, on International Workers' Day, we honor the struggles and triumphs of workers around the world who are fighting for a better future. As climate change activists, we recognize that the struggle for environmental justice is deeply connected to the fight for workers' rights.

We stand in solidarity with workers who are on the frontlines of the climate crisis, from fossil fuel workers who are demanding a just transition to renewable energy, to agricultural workers who are fighting for sustainable and equitable food systems.

We Need:
- A transition to renewable energy that prioritizes workers' rights and community ownership
- An end to fossil fuel subsidies and a shift towards sustainable infrastructure
- Support for workers in the most affected industries, including retraining and upskilling programs
- A seat at the table for workers and communities in climate decision-making processes

Together, we can build a more just and sustainable world for all. Let's come together and continue the collective call for a future that works for people and the planet!

A victory for and ! 🌍

After years of hard work by many different sectors of society, and through the continued efforts of civil society The Climate Change Bill has been passed in South Africa by all nine provinces.

On 17 February 2022, The Climate Change Bill was introduced by Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment. On 25 April 2024, the bill passed by both Houses and has been sent to The President for assent!

We hope that this essential piece of legislation will help safe guard people and planet from unjust and unsafe decisions from government, multinational corporations, and others.

Let us continue to and !

24/04/2024

As civil society, we demand that Eskom not proceed with its intentions to prolong the life of the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station, as it will continue to pose significant hazards to people's livelihoods. This is just another example of in action. Despite the fact that this extension may have a significant impact on people's health, we usually consider other potential effects. To understand how this expansion will affect your daily life, visit the previous post.

Public hearings have already begun in one round, but keep an eye out for the second round of these hearings to be held in your neighborhood. Make sure you attend and voice any issues you have on costs, the openness of these licenses and policies, and any other significant modifications that may have an impact on your daily need.
