Our Eating Support Group is open for registrations, and open to anyone!

You could be someone wanting to practice eating with others, someone keen to use body doubling to support you when trying a new taste or texture, or someone who is recovering from an eating disorder and wants a safe space to engage with people + food.

You can keep your camera and microphone off, using the chat function to engage as little or as much as you choose. We can also enable auto-generated captions to help you stay in touch with the conversation, even if hearing is difficult or you find it hard to process auditory information while also trying to eat.

A pre- and post-questionnaire will be available for you to complete each time if you feel comfortable to do so, and that will enable Shenae to meet the needs of each individual in the group.

Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is a progressive condition that affects nerve cells called “motor neurons”. These motor neurons carry messages from the brain to the muscles via the spinal cord, allowing people to walk, talk, swallow and breathe. With MND, however, the nerves become damaged and start to die, meaning that the muscles become weaker and waste away, impacting many aspects of a persons's functional capacity. The speed at which MND progresses and survival times vary for each person, however there is no cure for MND and it is life shortening.

We are privileged to support many people with MND through individualised nutrition care, which may include dietary changes, oral nutrition supplements, and a feeding tube. In honour of these people, their families and their friends, we will be doing the 2024 Walk to Defeat MND to fundraise for South Australia.

We would love you to get involved by joining us for the walk, or donating to our fundraising efforts: https://my.mndsa.org.au/my-fundraising/1838/pod-dietetics

Last week we saw client number 1000! 🥳

That is one thousand people we have worked with since opening in March 2021. One thousand people we have had the privilege to support with their nutrition care, at all ages and stages. We are so incredibly proud of the way we have grown over these past few years, and every one of these clients has been a part of that, whether we have seen them just once, or been seeing them since the very beginning.

Thankyou for being here with us! 🫶

A belated welcome to Cassie, who joined us in February! 👋

Cassie joins us in a Projects & Education role, taking the lead with student placements and projects that help us progress our vision for great nutrition care.

Cassie is an Accredited Practising Dietitian with experience working in the public health system in both South Australia and the UK, so she brings diverse perspectives that we are thrilled to benefit from.

Outside of work Cassie is a mum to a busy one year old boy, loves turning her hand to anything crafty (knitting, sewing, embroidery) and is a keen cook - we have already enjoyed plenty of her weekend baking at our Monday staff meetings!

Please join us in welcoming Cassie 😊

Our world view and life experiences inform the way we relate to food and our body, with religion and spirituality often having a significant impact on this relationship.

The book 'Breaking free from Body Shame' by Jess Connolly is a great resource for Christian women wanting to explore their faith in this context, and re-imagine their relationship with their body, made good in the image of God.

Available as a paperback, ebook or audiobook, we'd love to know what you think! 🤗

Author Jess Connolly explores the ideas of body image from a Christian lens, saying “It's one thing to know in your head that you were created in the image of God. Yet it's quite another to experience this belief in your body, against the cultural ideals of a woman's worth.” With an accompanying bible study, this is a great resource for women who want to rebuild their relationship with food and body in the context of their faith and spirituality." With lots of different phrases and acronyms, sometimes navigating the NDIS can feel like using another language!

Luckily for us, the NDIS have made a helpful glossary which includes an Auslan and Easy English definition for common phrases and acronyms. It is also listed in alphabetical order so things are easy to find.

The festive season can be a challenging time for our relationship with food and our bodies. Prioritising regular eating, giving ourselves permission to eat all foods, disengaging from food + body talk and practicing self-care + compassion, are all ways we can support our wellbeing throughout the next few weeks 🫶

If you're looking for more support in boundary setting and self-care these holidays, Body Liberation with Lindley Ashline & The Body Love Shop has pulled together an incredible list of resources and we cannot recommend them highly enough! Check them out via the link below - our personal favourite is the Nice, Spice or Ice responses to unsolicited food and body comments 🙌

Our team are proud to provide care that is affirming of diversity in gender and sexuality, however that may show up for each individual.

Earlier this week, Shenae attended a LGBTIQ workshop with SHINE SA and her learnings will be used to inform ongoing improvements to our service delivery to ensure we remain a welcoming, inclusive and affirming business for everyone. This might include updates to our intake forms, our website, and our clinic environment so keep an eye out for some changes over the next few months!

As a team, we are committed to continuing to learn and grow, so we look forward to engaging with more training and development in 2024.

In the meantime, if you are seeking nutrition care that is free of judgement, tailored to your needs and affirming of your identity please get in touch - we would love to support you.

Hear from our expert and champion in the field – dietitian, Natalie Mullins - on the key advice she provides her patients to prevent malnutrition.

Be a nutrition champion and join us in raising awareness of malnutrition – no matter who you are!

Fresubin has been a proud sponsor of Malnutrition Week in Australia and New Zealand, since 2020 – Right From The Start!

Photos from Pod Dietetics's post 10/10/2023

Malnutrition affects 1 in 4 older Australians living in the community, and an even higher number of people admitted to hospital or living in residential aged care 🏠

Malnutrition affects many health outcomes, including quality of life, functional capacity and life expectancy. It also slows down recovery and means that people who become unwell require longer hospital admissions 🤕

Preventing malnutrition is important to maintain the health of our communities, and we can do this by eating regularly, choosing foods that provide adequate energy + protein, and by keeping an eye on people who are at risk 🫶

If you know someone whose weight has changed unexpectedly, whose appetite or intake has changed, or who has become unwell and struggled to eat or drink, encourage them to seek support from their GP and a Dietitian so they can find out what is going on, and put strategies in place to stay well nourished 🥑

Our team support people of all ages to meet their nutrition requirements, whether that be through food, nutrition supplements, or tube feeds. Reach out today if you have any questions or want to book an appointment!

It affects people of all body shapes and sizes and has a significant impact on people's wellbeing. It also has a significant impact on the healthcare system due to the cost of malnutrition associated health complications.
