This week is National Stroke Week for the which is a timely reminder to know the F.A.S.T. (Face, Arms, Speech and Time) signs of stroke:

Face – Check their face. Has their mouth drooped?
Arms – Can they lift both arms?
Speech – Is their speech slurred? Do they understand you?
Time – Time is critical. If you see any signs of these, please call 000 straight away.

Think F.A.S.T. – Act Fast – it could save a life! ❤

1 in 20 kids are born with a birth abnormality/malformation or genetic disease that impacts their life. Instead of kicking a ball with friends at school, climbing trees or attending birthday parties, they’re in hospital having another surgery, fighting with their parents about taking medication or missing school for another doctor or therapist appointment. This Jeans for Genes Day, the team at Cleveland Medical are supporting the Children’s Medical Research Institute to find cures, so these kids can instead – just be kids!

We asked some of the Doctors here at Cleveland Medical for their top tips for prioritising mental wellbeing:
• Talk about it – to anybody you trust and know you aren’t alone.
• Practice self-care and commit to giving yourself time just for you each day.
• Stay connected – social connections are part of what make us human, and
they’re important to our mental health.
• Limit media time – breaks from world news, social media stories and digital
advertising is important. Negative information, misleading images or
disinformation can all have a negative impact on our mental wellbeing.
• Seek professional help – if you’re feeling overwhelmed, know there is help.

Talk with your GP or primary health provider to explore what options are best for you.

2. Let them know where you’re going and what you plan to do.
3. Stay informed. Learn the health risks and how to avoid them – nobody wants travellers diarrhea!
4. Pack yourself a travel health kit with all the essentials – meds, bug spray, sunscreen
Stay Healthy and have an Amazing Adventure

Let’s Talk! P is for Prostate

This Men’s Health Week is a great time to remind all the men in our lives the importance of regular prostate checks. And there are some things you can be on the lookout for:
• Frequent urination
• Difficulty starting or stopping urination
• Pain or burning sensation
• Blood in urine or semen
• Erectile dysfunction
If you're experiencing any of these symptoms, don't ignore them. Talk with your GP or health professional to seek more specific information for you.

14/06/2024

It's never a sign of weakness to seek help.
If your car breaks down – you go to a mechanic to fix it; if a pipe in your bathroom bursts – you call a plumber to come check it out; if your head feels overwhelmed – you book an appointment with your GP to get the help and support you need.

It's okay to not be okay, and there's strength in seeking help when you need it.

What is men’s health?
Aside from being a popular magazine, it’s also about health issues and concerns that impact men – like the fact men die in greater numbers than women from almost every non-sex-specific health problem.
For every 2 women that die, 3 men die.

Let’s talk about some basics.
Bowel Cancer (also known as colorectal cancer) doesn’t just affect old people and can affect any part of the colon or re**um – which are parts of the large intestine.
Almost 1 in 15 Australians will develop the disease in their lifetime and in Australia, bowel cancer has grown to become the second deadliest cancer. The risk of developing bowel cancer sharply rises from age 50, but you’re never too young to be diagnosed.
This Bowel Cancer Awareness Month, make the decision to get that screening kit done or speak with your GP if you have any concerns or want further tests completed.

Managing Emotions

Managing emotions can be difficult, not only for toddlers, but for all of us. The daily stresses of life can exacerbate emotions and sometimes make it harder to effectively process how we might be feeling. Try some of these tips next time you’re trying to regulate!
• Create space - emotions usually happen quickly so pausing, walking away or
taking a breath can slow the time between trigger and response.
• Notice and acknowledge how you feel.
• Tune into other symptoms that might heighten your emotions – are you tired,
hungry, overworked etc.
• Engage in positive self-talk – when emotions boil over, self-talk can sometimes
become negative.

Try to turn this around.
• Seek support – when you’re having a hard time talk to a partner, friend or therapist.

Caring for Seniors

At Cleveland Medical we appreciate older aged patients are often more likely to suffer from a range of health conditions or concerns than younger patients. Whilst when we think of ageing, we all expect wrinkles and grey hair to present, but sometimes did you know ageing will also affect your entire cardiovascular system; your bones, joints and muscles; as well as your bladder, memory, eyes, ears and teeth to name just a few?

The caring Doctors at Cleveland Medical are experienced to help you with any concerns you might have, as your health changes. With dignity and respect, they can work with you address current health concerns, whilst also collaborating to help prevent or delay the onset of other conditions you might be at risk of developing (like diabetes, heart disease, dementia etc.).

At Cleveland Medical we bulk bill the 75 years and older health assessment.

If you’re 75 years and older, we can also offer you an annual Health Assessment to help monitor your health and wellbeing. These assessments can assist your GP in identifying anything of concern with things like blood pressure, memory, fall-risks, depression, sleep and maintaining a healthy weight.
All this information can ensure your GP can pro-actively attend to any issues before they worsen and potentially even avoid a hospital admission in the future.

What does the 75+ Health Assessment include:
• Information Collection – patient history and arranging any tests / examinations required
• Overall Assessment
• Providing recommendations for interventions or improvements for better health
• Keeping a record of the assessment and sharing with any authorised parties
(e.g. carer, other specialists, allied health providers etc.).

Let Cleveland Medical coordinate your care across a team of skilled professionals.

Similarly, older patients often have more complex medications or prescriptions; referrals to specialists; and might even be on a Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plan to support their care. The GPs at Cleveland Medical work closely with a host of local pharmacists, medical specialists, and allied health professionals (physiotherapists, psychologists, audiologists, dietitians, podiatrists etc.).

Early intervention and regular health checks can help you enjoy a healthier life for longer. If you’re interested in speaking with one of our GPs or you’re interested in having a Health Assessment (and are 75 years and older), make an appointment online or by phoning reception during clinic hours.

As we age, we often experience changes or observe new spots on our skin.
Whilst they may be harmless, the best way to protect yourself from skin cancer is to continue to use sun protection all year round, and have your skin checked regularly.
If you’re due for your annual skin check, be sure to book online at https://www.clevelandmedical.com.au/ or phone reception on 07 3286 6899
