Art is such a powerful tool for connection and social change. Having visited the marvelous Mona and specifically, Icons, it is also an incredible form of cultural cartograhy.
In this case, a mapping of the crusades and, of the time, 'propaganda', that followed in the wake of them.
Iconography and imagery that signals ideals, holding such power at all levels of civic life today.
The images of gilded beauty belie a dark past, and a brutal and ongoing process of ethnic genocide, cultural cleansing, invasion and domination.
With the current crisis in Gaza, I felt it was a timely and deeply enlightening exhibit and highly recommend a visit.
Art holds the power to change minds, change societies and change us.
Use it for healing and connection, not oppression and dogma.

So proud of the artistic calibre of our state.
Congratulations to all the nominees, and winners of tonight's Tasmanian bunch in the National Live Music Awards.
Our industry is resilient, resourceful and full of brilliant people, and we need to support it with more places to practice, create, seed ideas, and nurture talent and collaboration.

Call out for a wonderful woman who I can personally referee for.
Please share, can you help?
"Hello Facebook hivemind of connect and disconnect.
Another year another humiliating post pleading for any leads on a rental for my sons and I.
My lease runs out in 3 months, which will zip by, and because you know there is a rental crisis and I don't want to be homeless over Christmas I'm putting it out there now for a home for me and my sons. My just turned 4 year old has moved four times in his life and it's not ok.
I'm exhausted.
I'd much rather live on a bus in a paddock where my boys can dig holes in the dirt, then this rental hell but the banks won't lend me the money as a single mum.(believe me I have tried for a loan for that very thing.)
So please DM if you know of any possibilities in this seemingly impossible situation.
One child starts prep next year, and other will be in Kindy.
Many thanks."

It took all of 18 years to realise this dream of co-housing for a group of 26 older women ranging in age from 58 to 94 in London. Maria Brenton, an academic, found out about co-housing when she visited the Netherlands and wondered why it couldn't happen in the UK. She got the ball rolling by meeting groups of older women and some of them took the ball and ran with it.
All the homes in New Ground overlook a garden blooming with wildflowers, berries and an orchard. The common meeting room is used for weekly dinners, film nights and yoga classes. There is also a guest suite for overnight visitors. Men are free to visit, but not to live there.
The older women manage everything themselves and tasks are divided up among teams of volunteers responsible for maintenance, gardening, communications, cleaning and legal issues. They also look out for each other through a “health buddy” system where each person has a circle of two or three buddies who will check in on each other, offering extra help such as shopping or cooking if anyone has a knee replacement or other mobility-limiting procedure.
This co-housing model is a mix of owners and social housing tenants. Don't you think we need this (and many of it!) here in Australia? We are happy to provide the meeting place (physical or online) for older women who want to make this a reality here. Email us at [email protected]

Hey City of Hobart , can you please enable closed captions on your city of Hobart live streamed council meetings?
30% of Tasmanians live with disability.
Some of them are deaf or hearing impaired citizens.
It's 2023.
Please make your public meetings accessible for all of the public with this very humble accessibility measure??
Anna Reynolds, Hobart Lord Mayor
Councillor Ryan Posselt, Hobart Helen Burnet Deputy Lord Mayor of Hobart Councillor Dr Zelinda Sherlock Louise Bloomfield Alderman Hobart City Michael Dutta
We have a situation in local government where some councilors :
*Don't attend workshops, don't hold portfolios
*Don't respond to community queries
*Don't do the research and mislead in their messaging
*Don't live in the electorate
*Don't abide by the code of conduct
*Don't declare their interests
*Don't focus on core council areas within their remit
* Don't show up to things
* Don't vote, (in favour of doing tv interviews)
* Don't do what they campaigned and got elected on
* Don't act to represent the whole community impartially
* Don't disclose their lobbyists or donors
Sheesh ...
The absolute least they can do, given the perks of office, and the elected member responsibility that comes with them is to show up to workshops and meetings and engagements ... and to vote.
This is not a post to shame councilors who do the job and absolutely is to shame those who are making a mockery of their duties to the community.
This is your dime Hobart.
You deserve better.
If you vote for me in 2026, I'll do better.

I will be running for HCC in 2026.
Make a note of this because the date's in my diary BIG TIME.
Hobart needs its heart back.
We need more people in council who care and with lived experience of what so many of us are going through.
Truth and reconciliation, culture, Arts, diversity, the youth, accessibility, local people and product, health, housing, climate action, science, education, community building.
There are some great people in there, and some people who seem to either not care about the responsibility of their job to the community, or only in it to obtain power over it.
Will you support me?
Give me a yes in the comments if you want!

A message from Emma and Adam 🖤
In response to the pandemic, we realised that future success in the arts necessitated shared vision and resources - the amalgamation of Tasdance and Situate was the first step in this direction. Renaming our home at 197 Wellington Street to ASSEMBLY 197 (or A197 for short) opened the door to welcoming smaller arts organisations and artists to ‘assemble’ together, sharing ideas and resources towards a bold collective vision for Tasmania's creative sector.
The next step is bringing our communication channels together. Beginning in September, we'll be renaming the Tasdance social media accounts to A197, and bringing it together with Situate social media accounts.
Here's to A197 and Tasmania's incredible future of live arts 👏
Want to learn more? Please reach out via whatever channel is best for you!
