❤️ FLAGPORT 💙

So proud of the and everyone who made this history making feat possible. It takes many people chipping in their piece and playing their role to make something like this happen. Culture is key.

Even prouder of these two girls who had to do it the hard way.

coming back off an ACL reconstruction and having a few set backs along the way.

who had a serious wrist injury and grade 3 MCL injury.

Both were tested of their patience and determination and with plenty of frustrating moments and hard discussions in rehab, trusted the process and can now call themselves premiership players in PMFC’s first ever VFLW Premiership.

Thank you for putting trust in our team to get you back to where we wanted you to be.

Up the Borough ❤️💙

Do you sometimes feel like there’s so much to remember when it comes to technique in the gym?

Maybe sometimes even getting overwhelmed that you end up with inconsistent reps?

The ‘checklist strategy’ can be really useful in this scenario.

I’m sure you’ve used a checklist when doing groceries as to not forget anything important or the necessities.

Giving yourself a ‘checklist’ with only the main cues like .physio mentions here can be beneficial in trying to ensure you’re ticking off the key things.

✅ Shins
✅ Elbows
✅ Slack
✅ Drive through the legs

Everyone’s list for the same exercise can be different depending on what needs work and what the goal of the lift is.

Try this out next time and save yourself from being overwhelmed.

This will allow you to execute and execute well.

Despite already being involved in our rehabilitation process, we can’t wait for Albert to be fully immersed and managing his own athlete injury list.

If you’d like to see Albert for any of your injuries, send us a DM.

🎄MERRY CHRISTMAS🎄

That’s it for me for 2022.

The support from everyone has been amazing over the last 2-3 years but this year in particular as the amount of clients, staff and others I’ve met, managed, worked and networked with over the year has been nothing short of amazing.

We do a mountain of work as people and we’d be nothing without those who support and put trust in us.

So this is a shout to all of you who have played a part in my growth as a professional and person.

Hope everyone has a safe and refreshing holiday period!

Another exciting partnership has been locked in for season 21-22.

The were looking to raise the standard of their sports medicine program for the upcoming season.

Having finished 4th in a Covid season, they’re looking to make moves up the ladder and win the ultimate prize 🏆

We’re super keen to contribute to their sports medicine program and quest for some silverware this season!

Excited to announce one of our partnerships for this year.

We’ve been working hard behind the scenes to connect with sporting clubs who have aspirations to take their programs to the next level.

Having worked with athletes before, it was a no-brainer to solidify a partnership that would see their athletes taken care of for both high-performance and sports rehabilitation.

We look forward to contributing to the club’s success this season and beyond.

💯 Unlocked

Mady has been working hard and chipping away bit by bit in the gym. She only started consistently training in the gym about 18 months ago.

A few weeks ago, we hit her 1RM testing week. All those hard days of training came to fruition on this 100kg deadlift @ 60kg body weight, with a bit more in the tank.

Can’t wait to see where she gets to when we test again!!

For quite some time there's been the idea that athletes need to train specifically for their sport, which is true but also must come with the understanding that a lot of sports require very similar traits.

For the sake of simplicity, this will just stick with court and field sports as it's easy to see that nearly every one you could think of (basketball, AFL, soccer, rugby, netball, tennis etc.) requires a baseline level of leg strength, as demonstrated by the amount of running, jumping and cutting in each sport.

For each of these sports, improving leg strength whilst maintaining centre of mass (which is what they all do to not fall down whilst playing) can be easily achieved with a deadlift or squat variation suited to the individual. They are big bang-for-buck exercises and are scalable across populations, making them relatively easy to administer.

This same philosophy can be used for upper limb strength or other generalised strength qualities, however the more specific tasks demanded of an athlete will then need to be addressed with slightly more thought.

For instance, a basketball player only has a 28m court to transverse so doesn't quite have the opportunity to get up to top speed whilst an AFL player could run up to 60m in an opportunitistic setting.

A basketball player also has more short-range cutting than an AFL player, so it would be wise to address more top-speed running work with an AFL player and spend more time on cutting drills with a basketball player.

In most things we do, we try to find context to experiences to increase motivation or to make decisions with information relevant to us. It’s generally well accepted that resistance training (RT) is good for us, but why? As detailed below, RT improves the following.

1. As we age, our bone mineral density decreases and the risk of bone breaks increases. RT increases our bone mineral density by putting positive stress through bones so that they are encouraged to remodel and reinforce.

2. RT results in greater muscle mass and strength. This can be important for a multitude of reasons, but day-to-day life consists of picking up children, groceries, furniture and moving them around. Even being strong enough to deal with your own weight is important for climbing stairs/ladders and reducing the chance of falls as we age.

3. RT has been shown to improve resting blood pressure and improved blood lipid profiles. When in poor condition, both of these are risk factors for cardiovascular disease so by keeping blood pressure and blood lipids in favourable ranges, the chances of stroke and heart attacks are reduced.

4. RT increases resting metabolic rate, improving insulin resistance and glucose tolerance. A higher resting metabolic rate is favourable for improving body composition, which can further feed into cardiovascular risk. Insulin resistance and glucose tolerance are also important factors for risk of type 2 diabetes.

5. RT can alleviate pain in people with osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia and low back pain. The mechanisms behind this pain alleviation can be complex, however they often use the body’s own internal production of pain-killer molecules to act in an analgesic manner.

6. RT can have a positive impact on depression, fatigue and total mood disturbance. This improvement may be correlated with improved self-esteem, increased independence (particularly the older population) but a specific reason why it may help mental health is difficult to decipher. However, the evidence clearly shows that resistance training is associated with improved psychological measures across age groups.

Junior Athlete Training

Horizontal pressing is a staple in most junior and senior programs. One thing that can happen quite often is progressing a junior athlete very quickly.

A major part of training the junior athlete is allowing for exploration and improving movement competency & options.

Here I gave the young lad a single arm horizontal press with a 3kg medicine ball. From a weight point of view, it was quite easy. However, from a stability point of view it was quite a challenge. The slow tempo allows him to learn the movement and concentrate on the task.

Including exercises that challenge multiple facets of a junior’s movement options is important to us as they learn to train. Load progression and standard barbell training is not the only way of progressing.
