The Charter of Aged Care Rights (the Charter) sets out the rights of all people receiving Government-subsidised aged care services.
The Charter applies regardless of the type of care or service.
The Charter makes it easy to understand what quality care looks like. It also gives clear expectations about the services supplied by aged care providers.
You have the right to be treated with dignity and respect at all times. This means that aged care service providers must honour your personal identity, values and cultural background, and provide care that acknowledges and supports your individual needs.
For instance, Staff should always respect your privacy by knocking on your door and announcing their intent to enter before entering your room in residential aged care.

🌈 Elder Rights Advocacy is committed to taking proactive steps to create inclusive, respectful, and supportive aged care services for everyone, including Le***an, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Gender Diverse Intersex and Q***r or Questioning (LGBTIQ) people.
Recently, our staff had the privilege of participating in specialised training from La Trobe University’s Val’s LGBT Ageing and Aged Care to ensure that, at ERA, older LGBTIQ people are welcome, included and visible.
The training, delivered by Pauline Crameri and Andrew Rogers, focused on the experiences of discrimination and marginalisation faced by older LGBTQI individuals and and how these may impact access to aged care advocacy, services and care.
Pauline and Andrew helped us explore key considerations in providing aged care advocacy that honours their identity, experiences, and dignity. By ensuring our services are inclusive and responsive, we aim to make aged care safer, more affirming, and equitable for all.
It's a common misconception that the Aged Care Volunteers Visitors Scheme (ACVVS) only benefits the older generation, but the truth is it offers incredible rewards for volunteers too. Here is Cat's story.
“Volunteering with ACVVS came at a time when I was struggling with confidence, was socially isolated, and had lost a lot of hope in my own future after battling some complex health and mental health issues.
I was matched with Jackie, who is an absolute gem! I am trans and q***r, so I was a little worried with how accepting she would be of me. I've been astounded at how open minded, accepting and willing to learn Jackie has been. She is powerful, funny, sweet and open minded. She loves to teach and loves to learn. She's the exact kind of person that I hope to become.
Connecting with Jackie has given me hope in myself again. No matter what we are battling inside, we all deserve kindness, friendship and connection. Our value as people doesn't stop because we are stuck inside or stuck in our own heads. Showing up for each other - in even the smallest of ways - can make such a huge difference in each other's lives. Jackie, and the amazing people I volunteer with, have been and continue to be that difference for me.”

Safe and High-Quality Care: Your Right from the Aged Care Charter
You have the right to receive safe and high-quality care and services. Every aged care service provider must have policies and procedures in place to ensure that care is delivered safely and meets the aged care quality standards. This includes staff training, regular audits, and feedback mechanisms.
Example: Aged care facilities must have regular staff training on emergency procedures and infection control practices to ensure that they are prepared to handle any situation effectively, maintaining the safety and well-being of all residents.

🌟 Volunteer Spotlight 🌟
Meet Victoria, one of our dedicated volunteers, who has found deep fulfillment and connection through the Aged Care Volunteer Visitors Scheme. Here’s what she has to say:
"I've been a volunteer with ERA since November last year. A year before, I had lost my grandma and was yearning for another connection. I felt truly inspired after watching Old People's Homes for Teenagers; this prompted me to look into the Aged Care Volunteer Visitors Scheme. Ever since then, I've been having a total blast doing home visits with my matched elderly. It's been such a rewarding and enriching experience, and I am so glad to be a part of a great initiative. It makes my heart warm knowing I've made a new friend, and that my visits can bring a bit of joy to someone's day."
Victoria, along with all our volunteers are invaluable, bringing warmth, friendship, and joy to the lives of those they visit. We are so grateful for their dedication and the difference they make every day.
