It's been a big 48 hours for tertiary students with the Government announcing changes to HECS indexation and placement payments.

Here's what the NUS thinks.

❕NUS WIN❕

Starting next year, the Federal Government will pay students in teaching, nursing, social work and midwifery up to $319 a week while undertaking mandatory placements.

The NUS will continue to advocate for fair wages for ALL students undertaking mandatory placements and the amendment to the Fair Work Act to make unpaid placements illegal.

The average student can expect a $1,271 increase to their HECS loan this June, with indexation is sitting at 4.8% 🤢

Here's what we think of HECS indexation and the impact it's having on students and graduates.

Friendship ended with student poverty, students that aren't forced to choose between food, rent and education are my friends now.

It was great to join forces with SRC, USYD - Students' Representative Council, University of Sydney, Abigail Boyd, UNSW Education Collective, Students Against Placement Poverty and NSW Young Workers Hub to demand an end to student poverty last Friday - but the fight doesn't end here 💪

11/04/2024

While students are living in poverty our current government thinks it’s ok to spend $300 billion dollars on nuclear submarines, continue funding Israel’s genocide on Gaza and refusing to make material conditions for students, workers and minorities better.

Join the National Union of Students (NUS) next Friday as we launch our campaign to demand an end to student poverty in Australia!

We will protest outside NSW Parliament house and demand are voices are heard.

Collective action is the only way we will be listened to. Join us in this fight.

Another week, another o-day dump 🤩

Your NUS reps were out and about in WA, NSW and SA chatting to students about our campaign to end student poverty and our fight to build an education system that works for students.

24/02/2024

The NUS National Union of Students has advocated for students throughout the entire process of the Australian Universities Accord. So, with the Accord Final Report expected to be released soon, we thought it a perfect opportunity to highlight the our demands!

As the peak representative body for tertiary students in Australia, our focus is always on standing up for student rights - and our demands reflect the dire need for increased government attention for student welfare, wellbeing and representation both on and off campus.

We asked for:

❗️AN END TO STUDENT POVERTY ❗️
- The Age of Centrelink Independence to be lowered to18
- The rate of income support to be raised
- Placements to be paid

❗️STUDENTS TO BE SAFE ❗️
- A National Student Ombudsman (done 🥳)
- A National Student charter
- Expand TEQSA’s regulatory powers and responsibilities

❗️HIGHER EDUCATION TO BE ACCESSIBLE❗️
- Freeze HECS indexation
- Increases higher education funding to 1% of GDP
- Free undergraduate tertiary education

It was incredible to be joined by so many student leaders from around the country at our annual President's Summit last week, graciously hosted by RUSU - RMIT University Student Union.

From the Universities Accord Final Report to the ongoing fight to end student poverty and everything in between, this year is going to be a big one - and we can't wait to work with everyone to make real change for students 💪

January 26 is never a day to celebrate.

It's a day of mourning. It's a day that marks the beginning of the colonial project known as Australia. It's a day on which, 236 years ago, the violent dispossession and oppression of our First Peoples began.

So called Australia was built on the back of the genocide of First Nations people - and as such, the very foundations of this nation were built to disadvantage First Nations people. To this day, Indigenous students are both less represented in our higher education student population and less likely to finish their tertiary studies than their non-Indigenous counterparts.

We cannot celebrate a system that allows Indigenous kids to be removed from kin and country, that allows Indigenous people to die in custody and that has put Indigenous students more at risk of not attainting their right to an education.

The NUS was proud to march today with student unionists around the country. Today, tomorrow and everyday, we stand with our First Nations siblings as together we struggle for Indigenous sovereignty, self-determination and justice.

Welcome to our newest member organisation TUSA State Council. We are excited to reactivate the Tasmanian Brach and represent every state

TUSA HAS RE-ACCREDITED WITH

Read our President’s statement below 👇
"Earlier this year, the TUSA State Council voted to re-accredit with the National Union of Students (NUS) after a long period of consideration. During which time we came to the perspective that many of the issues that we are facing on the ground, be that the cost-of-living crisis, rental crisis, and student welfare supports, are not unique to UTAS, but issues that students face nationwide. As such, in order to address the root causes of these issues, change needs to occur at the national level, a level that the State Council on our own, do not have the ability to influence effectively with our current resourcing. The NUS provides UTAS students with a voice at the national level, a voice that is heard in the halls of parliament and in the rooms where legislation is written, our students voice joins the chorus of the 1.4 million other students that the NUS represents. Your TUSA State Council will continue to make students' lives easier on the ground whilst utilising this national voice to push for systematic change!"

Last night the NUS National Executive showed their support for the generations of student sexual violence victims and condemned the inaction by universities to protect them.

We are joining EROC and Fair Agenda to demand a expert-led taskforce that can force Universities to do its job to protect its students.
