It's Threatened Species Day. Every year, more unique flora and fauna species are added to the threatened list. This week, the government added 20 more.
There are so many species we could talk about today, and we're choosing to spotlight the Greater Glider, which was listed as Endangered in 2022.
Over the past twenty years, Glider populations have dropped by up to 80% in some places due to the destruction of their habitat from landclearing, logging and increasingly severe bushfires fuelled by changing climate.
Gliders have also been a stalwart species for the many court cases held by community groups across Victoria, with enough injunctions keeping VicForests out of their habitat areas to eventually make native forest logging untenable in the state!
There's so much to be done to protect Greater Gliders. Come along to our FOREST FILM FESTIVAL this weekend to chat with us about how.

"The government is facing a battle to pass its bill to establish an EPA and a second new agency that would manage environmental data, with both sides of the aisle seeking amendments.
The opposition, Greens and crossbenchers have also all raised concerns about Labor’s delay of a larger package of reforms to Australia’s failing system of environmental laws which it committed to."

FEMINDER that this spectacular event is in two days!
The bushfire season is looming again, and climate change increases the danger year by year. Yet our approach to this threat has changed little in half a century.
But what if there's a way to detect and respond to forest fires while they're a more manageable size but still too small to be readily observed by traditional methods?
Dr Marta Yebra will join us via zoom to share the latest exciting developments in early detection and suppression of fire.
Dr Yebra is a Professor in Environmental Engineering at the Fenner School of Environment & Society and the School of Engineering, Australian National University. She is also Director of the Bushfire Research Centre of Excellence and Mission Specialist at the ANU Institute for Space.
Dr Yebra will be zooming in to the live event.
Followed by Q&A and light supper.
Entry is free.

"It’s been crazy busy here at KFF.
Adj A Prof Phil Zylstra’s visit was a triumph and his solid research was well received by community members who came to listen to his careful and common sense approach to landscape management and fire behavior.
In the field you can see the wisdom of his research. Planned burns make the forest more flammable by causing a flush of growth.
We need to stop burning forest, for wildlife, for biodiversity, for climate."

"You’ve heard us say it 100 times before: Our national nature laws are broken and full of holes.
Next week, the Senate will receive the inquiry report into new nature laws and likely begin debating the bills that represent the first stage of new nature laws in Australia.
Before our politicians head to Canberra for the debate, you can remind them that you’re expecting:
1. An EPA with integrity and access to justice.
2. An end to exemptions and loopholes for deforestation.
3. Protection of critical habitat for threatened species.
4. Amendments to tackle climate change

If you’ve ever wondered what our fantastic KFF team have been up to lately, here they are the Toolangi/Kinglake area deploying audio moths in 4 planned burn areas.
Stay tuned, we will let you know what turns up.
You are invited to the Wombat Forestcare AGM with guest speakers Aviya Naccarella (Deakin Uni) and Emily McIntyre (Melbourne Uni) who will kick-off proceedings.
Aviya’s research is focussing on the ecological interactions between mammals, fungi plants, and soils. Her research also explores how we can apply knowledge of these species interactions to land management in order to restore ecosystem health, function, and resilience. Emily’s research explores the distribution and diversity of truffle-like fungi and their mutualistic relationship with the endangered Long-Footed Potoroo. She is also undertaking research with MYCOmmunity Applied Mycology to examine the effect of storm damage on soil fungi within Wombat State Forest.
Saturday 7 September at 2pm at the Trentham Neighbourhood Centre.
Their talk will be followed by afternoon tea and the AGM at 4pm.

"We’re thrilled to partner with Day of the Species to bring this unique exhibition and event series to Naarm / Melbourne! This project features 2,003 one-of-a-kind artworks, each representing a different threatened species from Australia's EPBC List.
Curated by designer and educator Carmel Killin, more than 280 artists from across Australia have created tiny masterpieces on recycled packaging, showcasing the beauty and fragility of our biodiversity. This dynamic, real-time art activism project continues to evolve, with new drawings added as new species are listed.
The exhibition will take place from 17 August - 8 September at Black Spark Cultural Centre in Northcote—consisting of art exhibition, opening and closing nights, workshops, panel discussions, and more!"

Over the next three years, Forest Fire Management Victoria plans to burn 11,000Ha of prime habitat in the Glossy heartland. Young She-oaks take 5-20 years to produce viable seed.
Cumulative planned burns will dramatically reduce the available food supply of the Glossies.

"Join us for another 'Walk and Talk' workshop, this time discussing the impacts of fire on our forests and farmlands from the experience of three landscape management experts.
Two presenters will join us live in the field as we view and discuss the challenges and impacts within a light bushland and paddock environment. Local Gunnai man, Wayne Thorpe, will offer information from the perspective of a local indigenous man, and Joe Stevens will offer a perspective from someone whose involvement began in the 1970s in the Lands Department, before moving onto Forestry, and Parks Victoria. On arrival back at the Clifton Creek Hall, Professor David Lindenmayer will join us on the big screen to offer his perspective on forest ecology.
This will be a day of open dialogue and discussion - bring an open mind, sturdy shoes, and clothes to suit the weather on the day!!
Lunch will be provided."
