Altona Miniature Railway is a hobby club that provides miniature train rides every third Sunday of the month to the young and the young at heart. Rides are provided by our members scaled diesel and steam engines (5" and 7 1/4" gauge) over our 1.2 km length track

Our volunteers are busy putting the final touches on our new ‘tram stop’ community pavilion which will be officially opened on our next Open Day on the 18th of August.

Captured on a Insta360 Go3, its tiny size, made it easy to fit into the cab, making it look like a full-sized train until you see a ✋pop into view! 🚂

Exciting news: We are offering zero $$ 💵 membership and joining fees for the 2024-2025 year for the next two months, for all new volunteers.

Our W class tram, 1006 is now undercover thanks to our friends B&G Sheds with this magnificent structure which will also provide undercover space for our visitors.

Our volunteers still have work to do in the coming month to finish off cleaning up the area with more ground coverings and some new native trees.

This project has been made possible by a partnership with the Westgate Neighbourhood Fund.

Something very BIG is happening at the railway this week!

We are thrilled to be in Partnership with the Westgate Neighbourhood Fund that has commenced the construction of a roof to protect our W class Tram 1006 and more sheltered picnic space for our community to use!

In a couple of months this public space will be transformed!

It’s National Volunteer Week - A time to say thank you to our amazing group of volunteers!

From our ticket sellers to engine drivers and everyone in between our railway is entirely driven by a talented group of enthusiastic volunteers. Rain hail or shine, they will be out there keeping the wheels turning!

A huge thank you must go to these people, as without them we would not have an exciting little railway running in Altona North.

Our volunteers continue to be busy every week, today the team ballasted some new yard tracks that were recently installed.

Our volunteers regularly meet up during the week for social activities and to undertake tasks to continue to provide training rides to the community.

Our Story

Altona Miniature Railway is a volunteer hobby club that provides miniature train rides every third Sunday of the month to the young and the young at heart. Rides are provided by our members scaled diesel and steam engines (5" and 7 1/4" gauge) over our 1.2 km length track.

We are also available for hire for private events such as birthday parties and other functions like end of year celebrations. Being a 100% non for profit community organisation all funds from ticket sales go directly into maintaining the railway, site and providing improvements.

We are always looking for new volunteers to help run, manage, maintain and deliver new projects to further grow the railway for the community. The railway is apart of the national body the Australian Association of Live Steamers who host a annual national convention to showcase the hobby of model engineering and we have outings with our fellow clubs throughout Australia.
