Flynn Perez made a successful return to AFL football following a revision ACL reconstruction after suffering an ACL graft rupture early in the 2021 season. Working with elite athletes requires a collaborative approach with the surgeon, Club physio and rehab /support team and of course the athlete themselves. Elite athletes follow a similar rehab protocol to recreational athletes with criteria based early, intermediate and late stage rehab phases and need to pass a return to sport test before commencing training and graduated playing, through the VFL in Flynns case. Of course elite athletes are usually stronger and more powerful pre injury but also need to be physically resilient to the extreme demands of professional sport before they return to playing AFL.
Assoc Professor Jane Rooney, CF is one of only 3 Knee Specialist Physiotherapists in Victoria. Jane has a particular interest in ACL injuries; management options including non operative +/- bracing and operative management, rehabilitation and return to sport testing. Jane has successfully rehabilitated many of Australia’s elite athletes following ACL reconstruction including AFL, netball , field sports athletes, gymnastics and winter sports athletes. Jane has designed criteria based strength, power and neuromotor control testing to ensure optimal rehabilitation outcomes and re injury risk minimisation. Revision ACL surgery is particularly challenging to recover from due to additional damage to the knee and more extensive surgery. Jane is also involved in several current ACL research projects trying to improve ACL injury outcomes in Australia following on from her Churchill Fellowship exploring this topic in 2018.
