Chelsea & Bonbeach Train Station Group (CBTS)
A volunteer community group dedicated to improving the amenity of the area around Chelsea & Bonbeach
CBTS has run clean-up working bees, plantings, reported graffiti and advocated improvements around Chelsea and Bonbeach stations. We helped lead an arts project that beautified the underpass at Chelsea. Currently we are active on the Stakeholder Liaison Group to help deliver a better outcome as our stations get rebuilt as part of the level crossing removals at Chelsea and Bonbeach.
A Kingston Council meeting was held earlier this evening. Agenda is here: https://www.kingston.vic.gov.au/council/your-council/council-meetings/agendas-and-minutes
Agenda item 7.2 discussed Chelsea and its revitalisation. See Pages 76 - 90 for a report on consultation outcomes. Pedestrian connectivity from station to shops is mentioned. https://www.kingston.vic.gov.au/files/sharedassets/public/v/1/hptrim/council-administration-council-committee-meetings-public-agendas-and-minutes-%E2%80%93-council-meetings/public-agenda-ordinary-council-meeting-23-september-2024.pdf
Jùst got off the bus at Chelsea station. Does one go to the shops or straight home? Given the weather & lack of a handy crossing the answer is clear (to the detriment of local traders). Tim Richardson Melissa Horne MP
Trains are running this wild morning but there's major delays on the Frankston line. https://www.metrotrains.com.au/
NO TRAINS THIS MORNING. Replacement buses running to Cheltenham which still has trains to the city. But if you're going to the city you're better off getting the 902 bus from Chelsea or Edithvale and changing to train at Springvale. https://www.metrotrains.com.au/
Great to be with other community groups at the social media workshop for community groups organised by the City of Kingston being held this morning. The Chelsea and District Historical Society Inc. Longbeach Learning and Activity Centre Chelsea Community Support Friends of Mentone Station and Gardens Inc. & many others are here.
Had a few minutes to spare so chatted to people at Chelsea station about walking access to shops. People keen for a handier, direct Nepean Hwy pedestrian crossing. Especially a lady who felt unsafe at night walking along that dark narrow path hemmed in by that dreaded unbroken fence. We deserve better Tim Richardson .
Yes, we were on the radio today! ABC 774's 'Conversation Hour' talking about stations. So we got a few words in on Chelsea pedestrian access - and our dreaded fence. Tim Richardson
What a fantastic turnout for our AGM last week and what great speeches!
Thanks to Sonya Kilkenny MP Minister for Planning and Suburbs in the Victorian Government and Bonbeach’s local member. Sonya spoke on drivers for expansion into Suburbs, population growth and the need for housing and the process for developing the plan.
Rita Astill and Amber Swales Strategic Planners at Kingston Council gave us a presentation on The Chelsea Structure Plan process and took questions/comments from the floor.
Then Longbeach Ward Cr Georgina Oxley, City of Kingston Longbeach Ward provided her vision for Chelsea via a video presentation.
Great for locals to hear the latest and offer ideas!
CBTS will continue its advocacy and its future outdoor beautufications of our precincts. Keep following our facebook.
Its only $5 to join us and be part of this longstanding community group. Email [email protected] for more information.

We didn't need to be out for long to see someone jump the fence this morning. It's no accident that where they jumped the fence was where a convenient crossing would go. Minister Melissa Horne MP & Tim Richardson have even seen it themselves so it's time to do the right thing, fund it and build it. Cr Georgina Oxley, City of Kingston Longbeach Ward
[UPDATE] In Chelsea the 'Big Build' has become the 'Big Backtrack' as the community waits for action on a direct and convenient pedestrian crossing for Chelsea station's lift and footbridge. Yesterday we caught up with Tim Richardson at Parkdale station. The main point was that funding for a convenient crossing failed to get in the May 2024 state budget. The next possibility of funding is in November through road safety or active transport initiatives.
Mr Richardson said that a lot of emails have been received on the Chelsea pedestrian crossing issue which is great. But it is important to keep up the pressure in the next few months up to November. Also helps if you email roads minister Melissa Horne MP as well. Council can advocate but any fix requires state government to be on board. A state government project created this problem by not listening to community calls for connectivity. Thus we expect it to fix it ASAP and not kick it into the 'never never'.

[NEW VIDEO] The new Parkdale station opened for passenger service this morning. A lot of work needs to be done but permeability for those walking between homes and shops seems to be better than our stations. Here's what it looks like:
New Parkdale Station First Day The removal of the Parkers and Warrigal roads level crossings and elevation of rail required the rebuilding of Parkdale station on the Frankston line. It ope...

TRAINS RETURN TOMORROW! Which is just as well as a morning peak period substitute bus can take, when it's crawling, nearly an hour to reach Moorabbin. However replacement buses will be back later in the month for those travelling between Carrum and Frankston due to the works at Kananook.
Would be good to have a few more registrations for our Annual General Meeting being held in Chelsea on Friday August 9. Details here:

A cat can fit through here but a person can't. Problem is cats don't spend money at our shops. Design for people, not cats! Tim Richardson Rachel Payne MP
Had a few minutes to kill before catching the bus. Was going to duck across the road for a quick bite. But the fence with no central crossing makes such quick trips impossible. Might grab something at the destination instead. Just another example of how bad design is costing local traders money. Tim Richardson
While searching for something else we found a review of Melbourne suburban centres done over 20 years ago (including Chelsea). Chelsea was more like an inner suburb in how people got to the shops. In particular a lower percentage drove and a higher percentage walked. The analysis found that 30% of Chelsea shoppers walked to the shops - about the same as Lygon St and Sydney Rd in Brunswick. The Melbourne average, in contrast, for walking was about half that at 16%. Respecting and enabling walking access is thus essential for Chelsea's retail viability even more than for most other centres. https://www.planning.vic.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0027/636714/Activity-Centres-Review-June-2001.pdf Chelsea Shops Cr Georgina Oxley, City of Kingston Longbeach Ward Tim Richardson

Our Story
The Chelsea & Bonbeach Train Station Group was established in 2008 as part of the City of Kingston’s Community Renewal project.
With support from Metro Trains, the City of Kingston, the State Government and enthusiastic volunteers, we have grown to become an incorporated community group focused on improving the amenity of Chelsea and Bonbeach train stations and surrounds.
Activities include working bees, litter removal, weeding and planting to beautify our station precincts. We report vandalism and maintenance issues to the authorities. We have engaged with the Level Crossing Removal Authority to seek a good outcome for the community when Bonbeach train station is rebuilt as part of the proposed level crossing removal.
We welcome new members to our working bees and committee meetings. News of our activities is contained on this page so please ‘like’ us to stay in touch.
